Macon, Georgia -- Div II 12th ranked Albany State Rams were upset over the weekend 26-24 by the Lane Tigers. ASU QB Stanley Jennings was sacked three times and couldn't get the passing game going in this one. Albany State was the superior team from the jump, but seemed to lose focus as the game went on.
Lane QB Mckinsley Marbury put on a clinic scoring 6 total touchdowns (3 passing, 3 rushing) in this game. This was very much a trap game for Lane and it goes to show how much you cannot take a team lightly.
This week Albany State will return home to face the Morehouse Tigers. This game will all but decide the Eastern Division in the SIAC. Look for Albany State to bounce back and play a much better game, but I don't think they have the horses to compete with the 'House.
The Morehouse Maroon Tigers traveled to Columbus, Ga to take part in the 76th Annual Morehouse-'Skegee Classic. It was a game in which Tuskegee led at the half, and it appeared ...

Undefeated WSSU Rams say they will stay focused
Winston Salem, North Carolina -- Even though 13th-ranked Winston-Salem State will be playing perennial loser Livingstone on Saturday, in some respects this week will be one of the toughest for coach Connell Maynor.
His task is convincing the Rams (6-0) that they still must perform at a high level to beat the Blue Bears (1-5), who have just six wins in the past seven seasons.
Maynor, however, said he senses that his team understands what's in front of it. A victory will clinch the CIAA's Southern Division title and that will get the Rams a spot in the conference-championship game on Nov. 12 in Durham.
"You have to stay focused," Maynor said. "We have bigger goals of winning the CIAA and winning playoff games and the guys understand that. We have to be prepared every week because everybody wants to beat us."

Stillman defense steps up big with eight turnovers in rout of Benedict
TUSCALOOSA, Alabama | A stingy, opportunistic defense led Stillman College in a 44-0 rout of the visiting Benedict. Stillman scored 37 points as a direct result of turnovers.
The Stillman defense came out swinging against Benedict, forcing a season-high eight turnovers and allowing 102 yards, including only 27 yards in the first half.
“They played hard, they played fast and they played together,” Stillman coach Teddy Keaton said. “Those are the things you want a defense to do.”
The carnage started early. On the opening drive, Benedict mixed the run and the pass and made it all the way to Stillman’s 22-yard line before quarterback Christopher Thomas threw an interception to Bryant Mosley.
Next, it was Stillman quarterback Dondre Purnell who connected with Roger Dixon on a 27-yard touchdown strike. Dixon blew by two defenders and scampered all the way down the sideline for the score.

Albany State Rams: 'No excuses'
ALBANY, GA — The question marks are there. They are sprinkled throughout the Albany State football team as it inches toward the 2011 season — a year where the Rams will be defending the SBN National Black College Football Championship and SIAC crown.
And how will the team handle a slew of unknowns, including a new offensive coordinator, a depleted offensive line, an inexperienced group of linebackers and a tougher schedule? ASU coach Mike White said Friday that it will happen, but only with hard work — and no excuses.
No Excuses--ASU Rams have to replace superback LiRonnie Davis
“The 2011 season will have a lot of question marks and a lot of new faces,” White said during the 12th annual Quarterback Club Kickoff Football Reception at Eula Lovett Hall. “But be sure of one thing: As Albany State Golden Rams, we will battle as hard as we can, and we will leave it on the field. Every time, we are going to leave it out there. Every thing we got will stay on the field. And that’s what we have always been about.”

Chowan Hawks projected fifth in CIAA-North
ETTRICK, VA. — Michael Jordan used to say about winning championships, “It’s the shoes”.
Thursday at the annual pre-season football Media Day for the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) you could have said, “It’s the hair”. Or maybe, the ‘lack’ thereof.
The coaches of the four top picks to win the 2011 CIAA Football championship are: (1) from the league’s South Division, and (2) happened to have been sporting bald heads on Media Day. Members of the CIAA Football Coaches Association have picked defending 2010 champion Shaw University to repeat in 2011. Winston-Salem State was picked second, followed by St. Augustine’s College, and Fayetteville State.
Elizabeth City State edged out Virginia State to win the North Division and play November 12 in Raleigh for the league title. Meanwhile, Chowan was picked fifth in the division and ninth among the dozen league teams. The Hawks were among the teams who had to adjust their schedules...

Tuskegee picked to win SIAC West, Miles a surprising second
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- First-year Miles College coach Reginald Ruffin said no one is surprised that Tuskegee was tabbed to be the team to beat this year in the West Division of Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football.
"Tuskegee is the team," said Ruffin, a former Tuskegee assistant. "They have been the mecca of the conference, they have been the mecca in black college football. They are a big measuring stick of where you would like your program to be."

SportsGroove Presents CIAA 2011 Football Media Day
Heritage Sports Radio Network (HSRN) Mark Gray report from the CIAA 2011 Football Media Day as the conference prepares for its 100th season of intercollegiate athletics with the start of the gridiron action.
HSRN Announces 2011 Football Broadcast Schedule
Hartly, DE – The Heritage Sports Radio Network (HSRN) will broadcast 23 exciting football games including the Super 7 Series of classic events. The broadcasts will be national on Sirius XM Satellite Radio and on local stations across the country. “This will be our most exciting broadcast schedule yet. The staff is proud to present the HBCU community a national radio platform that will give all fans and alumni consistent coverage,” said HSRN CEO Omarr Bashir.
HSRN will kickoff the schedule on (Sept. 1) with the Division I FBS vs. Division I FCS match-up in Piscataway, NJ, N. C. Central and Rutgers.
The highlight of the schedule is the “Super 7 Series” which includes seven events that will bring the Major Classics to the HBCU national community. The series will open on (Sept. 3) in Nashville, TN with the John Merritt Classic featuring Tennessee State and Southern. The “Super 7 Series” will also feature (Sept. 10) Cleveland Classic – N.C. Central vs. Central State, (Sept. 24) Atlanta Classic – Florida A&M vs. Southern, (Oct. 1) Circle City Classic – Albany St. vs. Kentucky St., (Oct. 29) Magic City Classic – Alabama A&M vs. Alabama St., (Nov. 19) Florida Classic – Bethune Cookman vs. Florida A&M and (Nov. 26) Bayou Classic – Grambling St. vs. Southern.

There will also be four double header weekends including the championship games for the CIAA and SIAC (Nov. 12).
Top non-conference match-ups this season will be the Hampton Roads, VA CAA vs. MEAC rivalry (Sept. 17) between Hampton and Old Dominion, FBS/FCS match-up (Nov. 3)) between Mississippi Valley St. and South Alabama, and (Nov. 24) Annual Turkey Day Classic – Alabama St. vs. Tuskegee.
Conference rival match-ups will include (Sept. 17) Bowie St. homecoming vs. Livingstone (Oct. 15), N.C. A&T homecoming vs. Delaware St., and (Oct. 22) Florida A&M vs. S.C. State.
Founded in 2006, HSRN was created to provide a sports voice for the HBCU community. For over 100 years HBCU's have participated in collegiate athletics with little to no media coverage. Stars like Walter Payton, Doug Williams, and Michael Strahan are just a few of the many superstars who were HBCU athletes. There are approximately 7 million fans of HBCU sports who were media orphans in search of a home. HSRN is the only national radio network dedicated to HBCU sports. Our goal is to fuse the greats of the past with the stars of today to showcase the significance of this unique colorful and underserved sports community.

Albany State: Hottest ticket in town
ALBANY, GA — A 10-0 regular season, an SIAC title, a deep run in the D-II playoffs and being named the SBN National Black College Football Championship sure was nice last season for the Albany State football program.
But in 2011, the Rams plan to take it up a notch. With a super-competitive, extremely tough slate of games scheduled for the upcoming season — including at home against rival Valdosta State, a trip to Indiana for the 28th Annual Circle City Classic against Kentucky State and a chance to play in the inaugural SIAC East vs. West Championship game in Atlanta — the Rams hopes their fans are as ready as they are for this year.
And starting today, ticket packages will go on sale for what certainly could be another record-breaking Rams season. Season ticket packages for ASU’s home football games are $70. Tickets for an upcoming classic games — of which ASU will play in four (Circle City Classic, Fountain City Classic, South Georgia Heritage Classic and Music City Classic) — will also go on sale today.

Stillman's Logan wants senior season to be special
Keaton wants to build a winning program at his alma mater. Logan, who’ll be playing for his third head coach in four years, wants to close out his career with a championship.
“I really don’t have specific goals, statistics-wise, of how many catches or how many touchdowns, but I really do want to be an All-American in this game,” said Logan, a 6-foot-3, 245-pound tight end from Gulfport, Miss. “I want to bring home a conference championship because I’m more of a team person, rather an individual stat person.”

Former TCC standout having sucess at Miles
Fairfield, AL - Former Talladega County Central standout, Reginald Virges is excited about what the upcoming season holds for the Golden Bears of Miles College. After two solid seasons, Virges believes the changes they have made in the off-season will help them to reach their goal of making it to the postseason.
“My first two years up there were good,” Virges said. “I came in as a freshman and I didn’t know that I was going to get the starting spot like that. When I came in I got the starting spot and started playing. I feel like this year is going to be a better because we have better coaches that can help us go somewhere this year.”
Last season, Virges recorded 81 tackles, 15 tackles for a loss of 87 yards and six sacks for a loss of 46 yards. “I was the leader of the defense last season,” Virges said. “I am trying to make this team into a better team, we are trying to get to the playoff this year. We haven’t made the playoffs the last couple years and our goal is to make it to the playoffs and to turn this program around.”

Columbus may host another championship game
Columbus, GA - It is still too soon to tell if Columbus will become the home to another championship sporting event. The Columbus Sports Council met with the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference earlier this week about the SIAC bringing its championship game to Columbus beginning in November. If the game comes here, it would be played at A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium.
The game is tentatively scheduled to be played Nov. 12, which coincides with the final day of the Georgia High School Association cheerleading championships, which are held next door at the Columbus Civic Center. The sports council asked the SIAC to consider playing the game on Nov. 13, a Sunday.
Two SIAC games are played here annually. The Tuskegee-Morehouse game is scheduled to be at Memorial on Oct. 8, while the Albany State-Fort Valley State game will be on Nov. 5.
The Pioneer Bowl is set to return this year on Dec. 3. It is one of three NCAA Division II bowl games. It pits a team from the SIAC against a team from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The Pioneer Bowl was played for the first time in Columbus last December. Saint Augustine's beat Fort Valley 20-14.
