When it comes to rogue agents, Grambling's coach makes Saban look soft on crime

As Nick Saban demonstrated and advocated at SEC Media Days, name-calling and license-revoking are two ways to deal with agents and their minions who don't play by the rules. Grambling State University coach Rod Broadway, a former Florida assistant, favors a tougher approach.

Blindfolds and cigarettes. Then lock and load.

"No. 1, they should put 'em all in front of a firing squad, then shoot their ass, if you catch guys doing that stuff," Broadway said Tuesday at SWAC Media Day in Birmingham. "Because that's wrong.

Coach Broadway comments are at the 2:45 mark.

Grambling State Selects 15 New Tigers for Football

Grambling addressed some key areas

Grambling signed 15 recruits on Wednesday, plugging several holes on its roster — some current, and some that will open up down the road. The signing class included four linebackers, two defensive backs, two offensive lineman, and some potential successors to quarterback Greg Dillon, who will be a senior in the upcoming season. It addressed some key areas of need for fourth-year head coach Rod Broadway. The playmakers that might someday replace Dillon bring the most intrigue. Anthony Carrothers, a 5-foot-8, 175-pound quarterback from Independence High in Charlotte, N.C., has an eye-popping resume. He finished his prep career with 13,000 yards of total offense, 100 passing touchdowns, and 56 rushing touchdowns.

Tigers Close Day One of National Signing Day With 15

Grambling, LA--- Grambling State head football coach Rod Broadway was very pleased with the results at the end of the day on day one of the football national signing period. With 15 freshman and transfers inked, Broadway feels the Tigers have addressed some needed issues. “We went after needs. We didn’t get a lot of numbers but we are happy with what we received”, Broadway said. We didn’t go after a lot just what we needed in spots and so hopefully we have put some pieces of the puzzle together and it will show up down the road.”

Grambling State 50, Mississippi Valley State 7

Grambling plays complete game in homecoming victory over Valley

GRAMBLING, LA -- Quarterback Greg Dillon was a threat through the air and on the ground, and the Grambling defense turned in a dominating performance as the Tigers beat Mississippi Valley State 50-7 on Saturday. Dillon was the driving force behind a GSU offense that piled up 446 yards of total offense. The Grambling defense matched Dillon's effort, holding the Delta Devils to 145 yards of total offense and just six first downs. Ari Johnson gave Grambling an early 6-0 lead with field goals from 22 and 33 yards out. Then Dillon went to work, finding Van Phillips for a nine-yard score and Larry Donnell for a 3-yard score that gave the Tigers a 19-0 lead with a minute to go before halftime.

Healed up, Grambling quarterback Greg Dillon is looking like old self again

GRAMBLING, LA -- Now that's the Greg Dillon we've come to expect. Grambling's star quarterback -- plagued with turnover problems and injuries in the first half of the season -- returned to form on Saturday, accounting for four touchdowns in the Tigers 50-7 demolition of Mississippi Valley State. Dillon injured his ankle in a Week 4 loss to Oklahoma State, but after a bye week that allowed him to get back to full strength, he looked like the Greg Dillon of old -- the one who earned MVP honors in the 2008 Bayou Classic and the 2008 SWAC Championship game, and led the conference in passing efficiency.

GSU struggling in the red zone

Grambling is still learning how to finish drives. Even in its most recent win, at Alabama State, the Tigers had notable troubles scoring despite making it to the opponent's side of the field. "We've got to start putting points on the board," said Grambling coach Rod Broadway. "We're getting down there and kicking field goals. You can't win a lot of times kicking field goals from inside the 20-yard line. We've got to get that corrected." GSU has scored touchdowns on 13 of 24 trips inside the 20-yard line this season, settling for field goals 9 times, and turning the ball over twice. Back 10- or 15-yards further out, and the numbers nosedive.

Grambling State stockpile top quarterback recruits

Efferlan Williams is hoping to bring the same success he had during his brief time at Greer High to Grambling State University. Williams, Greenville County's player of the year during the only season he played for the Yellow Jackets, has signed a national letter of intent with Grambling. Williams transferred in from Maryland during his junior year and played for the Jackets as a senior. He rushed for 1,844 yards and passed for 734 yards and led Greer to a 10-2 record and the Region 3-AAA championship.

"Efferlan made a huge impact in regards to our offensive production," Greer coach Will Young said. "His ability to throw the ball well and, of course, run the ball made us multi-dimensional."

Efferlan Williams Sr. said North Greenville, Livingstone and North Carolina A&T showed interest in his son, but Grambling was the best fit. "Efferlan could play a number of positions, but his heart was set on playing quarterback, and we told him we wanted him to be happy and play the position where he wants to play," Efferlan Sr. said.

Greer, S.C. QB (#7) Efferlan Williams signs with Grambling State

"At first, there were a lot of smaller schools that were looking at me. I tried to wait it out. Grambling was the last one, and I liked what they had to offer," the younger Williams said. "I like their tradition. They run a similar offense to what we ran. When I came to Greer, I liked the type of offense that we ran."

Tarpon Springs High School (Florida) quarterback Danny Reyes will be continuing his football career at Grambling State University, said Spongers head coach George Kotis. The senior signed his letter of intent on February 20. Reyes led the explosive Spongers offense to the regional quarterfinals this season by throwing for over 2,400 yards and completing 61.6 percent of his attempts. According to stats compiled by maxpreps.com, Reyes threw for the second highest amount of yardage of all Tampa Bay area quaterbacks in 2008.

Reyes and Williams will join incoming Tigers freshmen All-State student-athletes Brendan Crawford and Justin Higgins, who signed their letters of intent on National Signing Day.

Brenda Crawford is a 6-5 205 quarterback from El Paso, Texas Chapin High School. Crawford was an All-State performer who transferred into Chapin High School before the start of the 2007 season and made an immediate impact. He passed for 2,207 yards and 20 touchdowns and rushed for 266 yards and nine touchdowns. The talented Crawford also averaged 40.6 yards per punt with a long of 64 yards.

Justin Higgins is a talented QB from Rayville, Louisiana. The 6-2 185 Rayville High School product is one of the top athletes in the state who’ll play quarterback for Grambling State. He was named to the 2007 Class 3A LSWA All-State Team as an athlete and was named as the LSWA’s Outstanding Offensive Athlete as a junior in 2006. Higgins passed for over 6,000 yards, rushed for nearly 2,000 yards and surpassed the 60-touchdown mark in his high school career. He was also an standout linebacker in high school.

Spotlight: Ex-Raider/Grambling Tiger now playing All-Pro as Texas grape grower

Former Grambling State University All-American defensive tackle Alphonse A. Dotson hopes to open winery

VOCA, Texas — As he strides through his vineyard wearing a wide-brimmed hat and tan coveralls, the years fall away so easily from Alphonse Dotson that, even at age 65, one can picture him lining up at defensive tackle for the Oakland Raiders. While nearly 40 years have passed since Dotson was tossing aside blockers, he remains an imposing figure — the result of 70-hour work weeks tending some of the most prized grapes in Texas.

His broad grin and outstretched hand belie his fearsome football image as he greets visitors to his 83-acre vineyard northwest of Austin. His handshake, which threatens, but doesn't crush, reveals the calluses that come from hard work.

Here, at Certenberg Vineyards, Dotson's grapevines — some 1,800 plants in all — have produced what some say are the best cabernet sauvignon, merlot and chardonnay grapes in the Texas Hill Country. Wine is hot in Texas and the wine coming out of the Hill Country is winning numerous awards. In January, Saveur magazine included Dotson and the vineyard in its 10th annual list of 100 favorites in the world of food.

Dotson not only grow the best wine grapes in Texas, but has produced a line of great football players in his family. His son is defensive tackle Santana N. Dotson who was NFL Rookie of the Year in 1992 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and played in two Super Bowls with the Green Bay Packers. He was a Super Bowl champion winning Super Bowl (XXXI) with the Packers and ended a 10 year career playing with the Washington Redskins in 2002.

Dotson's grandson is Alonzo Dotson ... nephew of Santana Dotson. Alonzo is an Oklahoma senior DE that is preparing for the NFL draft.
