Howard's Cox, Lackey Split 10 Goals in Final Road Game

DETROIT, MICH. – The Howard lacrosse team dropped to Detroit Mercy 20-14 in their final road game of the regular season. The Lady Bison (3-10, 0-7 NLC) was led by their top-two leading scorers – Desiree Cox andCourtland Lackey – who grossed 10 of HU's 14 goals, splitting five scores a piece.

Lackey was first to score for the Bison after the Titans (3-10, 2-5 NLC) jumped off to a 4-0 lead in the first ten minutes of play. Detroit would score two back-to-back goals before the Lady Bison rallied a trio of goals byChastity Dailey, Lackey and Cox, shortening Detroit's lead, 6-4.

Cox led another offensive attack in the final six minutes, giving HU it's first two goals in a late 4-0 run and put Howard within one goal of tying Detroit, who at this point led 9-8. Both NLC opponents traded goals until the final seconds of the half and HU trailed two goals as Detroit held the 11-9 advantage.

Although Detroit outshot the Bison 26-12 and doubled HU in groundballs (20-10), solid defensive play by Howard goalkeeperAmber Meeks helped to keep the game close as she finished the half with eight saves compared to the Titans who were held to zero.

Howard nearly matched Detroit in draw controls in the first period with 10 while the Titans finished with 11. Ashley Footesacked five draw controls in the game to lead the team. She also finished first on the team in groundballs with four and was one of five Bison to cause a turnover.

In the second half, the scoring frenzy slowed on both sides, HU was outscored by Detroit however, 5-9.

Detroit got off to another 4-0 lead before Cox chimed in with a Bison goal. Cox would score again and Lackey also scored twice in the final half. Ashley Lawrence scored Howard's 14th and final goal of the game before Detroit went on to score three more before time expired.

Howard's Lackey Scores Three in Loss to Jacksonville

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Howard lacrosse team returned to Greene Stadium after a six-game road campaign, marking their first National Lacrosse Conference match at home. The Lady Bison (3-10, 0-6 NLC) faced off against NLC leader Jacksonville, but were unable to overcome the Dolphin’s (11-4, 6-0 NLC) 15-goal first half lead and eventually fell 22-6.

Howard contained the NLC’s No. 1 team in the opening minutes of the game as the Dolphins scattered only two scores in the first ten minutes of play. HU surrendered the draw control advantage (12-5), allowing Jacksonville to score 13 additional goals by the end of the first.

Cynithia Smalls was the only member of the Bison to score in the first half where she sliced JU’s 8-goal run.

Senior Desiree Cox was shutout of the first half and attempted to score within the final minutes, but was unable to convert her two shots into points on the board.

After JU scored two early goals in the second, the control of the game transitioned into the hands of the Lady Bison. Until the final five minutes left in regulation, HU held Jacksonville to three goals and led 5-3 in the half.

Ashley Lawrence was the first to score for the Bison and Courtland Lackey went on to add three goals. Cheryse Cox also chimed in, nailing Howard’s fourth goal of the game.

The Dolphins would regain an offensive momentum however, and went on a 4-0 run in the final two minutes, concluding the game at 22-6.



Howard tallied 12 groundballs compared to JU’s seven but were outshot, 39-16. Ashley Foote led Howard with seven groundballs while Lackey led with five shots.

HU Lacrosse Buries A Tough Loss On The Road

HIGH POINT, N.C. – After a tough series of road matches, the Howard lacrosse team fell to High Point, marking their fourth consecutive National Lacrosse Conference loss. Although the Lady Bison (3-8, 0-4 NLC) scored only one goal in the match, the team has one more chance left to gain a win in their six-game road campaign before returning to the nation’s capital on April 9 against fellow NLC opponent Jacksonville.

Cynithia Smalls was the only member of the Bison to post a score in the 19-1 defeat. This match marked the first game all season that last year’s NLC Player of the Year Desiree Cox left the field without at least one goal. Cox managed to be a part of the Howard’s lone scoring play however, as she was credited with the assist to Smalls.

Smalls’ goal came in the first half with 16:27 left on the clock. Prior to her score, High Point had tallied six goals within the opening 12 minutes. Following Howard’s goal, the Panthers went on a 7-0 run to lead the Lady Bison, 13-1 by halftime.

Howard was unable to outpace the Panthers in shots as HPU posted 31 compared to HU’s ten. Recording the most shots for the Bison was Cox with five. The Panthers also held the advantage in groundballs over Howard (25-18). Leading HU with the most groundballs was Courtland Lackey with four.

The Lady Bison were kept out of the net in the second half and were unable to slow down High Point’s offensive momentum as they went on to score six additional goals by the close of the game.

HU Bison Denied First Road Win Against CCSU

NEW BRITAIN, CONN. — The Howard lacrosse team failed to record their first win on the road on Friday afternoon after dropping 10-20 at the hands of Central Connecticut State. With the loss, the Lady Bison fell to a 3-5 season record.

Bouncing back from her lowest-scoring game of the season with one goal against St. Francis (Pa.) was senior Desiree Cox who mustered four goals in Howard’s loss. Courtland Lackey tied Cox for most Bison goals while junior Cheyrese Cox and Cynithia Smalls recorded the remaining two goals.

Smalls was the first to get on the board for Howard, scoring unassisted seven minutes into the first half, slimming Central Connecticut (5-2) to a 3-1 lead. The Lady Bison struggled to catch up with the Blue Devils who went on to score four unanswered goals within the opening 20 minutes of play.

Lackey chimed in with HU’s second, and her first, goal of the game with 9:21 on the first period clock. Shortly after Lackey gave the Lady Bison hope to close in on the Blue Devils after notching back to back scores late in the first half. Desiree, who is normally Howard’s leadoff scorer, remained scoreless until 3:18 was left in the first half. Her score edged the Lady Bison within six goals by the close of the half.

Despite the energetic burst produced late in the first half by Lackey and Desiree, the Bison came up short in the second half as they were outscored by the Blue Devils 5-9. Three of those five goals came from Desiree, Howard’s leading scorer.

Howard goal keeper Amber Meeks recorded seven saves against Central Connecticut’s 27 shots on goal. Overall the Lady Bison were outshot 34-27, despite maintaining a fair trade in draw controls as CCSU narrowly topped Howard with a 17-15 advantage. Howard slightly exceeded the Blue Devils in turnovers (15-16), but perfectly matched their opponent in ground balls (21-21).

The difference in the game was a matter of shooting percentage as the Bison converted 10-of-26 shots on goal into points on the board, while CCSU racked in 20-of-27. In the end, Howard shot 37 percent, which wasn’t enough to master the Blue Devils who recorded 16 saves and managed a 58.8 shooting percentage.

Red Flash Snap Howard's Three-Game Winning Streak

LORETTO, PA. (March 13, 2011) – The Lady Bison lacrosse team suffered their first loss during the month of March after dropping 19-3 to Saint Francis (Pa.), ending their three-game winning streak.

Howard (3-4) started slow compared to the Red Flash (2-4) who sprinted to a 9-0 lead with 16 minutes into the opening half. Senior Desiree Cox scored Howard’s first goal in the first half with 13:55 left on the clock. The Red Flash limited Cox to only one score, marking a season low for Howard’s leading scorer.

The Lady Bison were outshot 16-31. The Bison recorded six saves while St. Francis chimed in with nine.

Cox and Courtland Lackey led the Bison with five shots a piece, while Cheryse Cox and Cynithia Smalls garnered two each. Chastity Dailey managed to only throw in one shot, but made it worthwhile as she converted it into Howard's second goal during the second half.

Lackey was responsible for the Lady Bison’s remaining goal. Lackey found the back of the net with 1:15 left in regulation to round out the final score, 19-3.

The Red Flash were able to secure the game over the Lady Bison after controlling every major statistical category.

Saint Francis dominated the draw control throughout the game, generating a 13-5 advantage. The Lady Bison were unable to grab ground balls in the second half, as Saint Francis garnered 12. Overall, the Bison relinquished 16 ground balls to their opponents, and only scooped up one throughout the entire game.

The Lady Bison will look to bounce back from their loss as they hit the road to take on Central Connecticut State on Friday, March 18 at 3 p.m.
