JSU's Denardo Smith hopes to make mark at tailback

Denardo Smith knows this is his chance.

The redshirt freshman came to Jackson State last fall with the undefined "athlete" label. He played linebacker, and even some defensive end, at Carver High School in Montgomery, Ala. He started out as a safety/linebacker with JSU, but was quickly converted to running back.

Carver certainly wasn't getting any playing time behind the trio of Erik Haw, Lavarius Giles and Cody Hull in 2007 - hence the redshirt. But there weren't high expectations for 2008 either - until Haw decided to forgo his senior year and test the NFL waters.

PVAMU set to face Texas State in the WNIT


The PVAMU Lady Panthers are set to kickoff a 2008 Women's National Invitational Tournament run

FORT COLLINS, Colo.- The Women’s Invitational Tournament announced its field of 48 teams on Monday, March 17th with Prairie View A&M scheduled for a first round match-up versus Texas State of the Southland Conference.

Prairie View A&M enters the game with a 22-11 overall record while Texas State brings a 20-10 mark into the contest. The Lady Panthers continue to break barriers under the leadership of head coach Cynthia-Cooper Dyke as this mark their first WNIT appearance.

The Lady Panthers had a history making season as they brought home the schools first out right regular season title in women’s basketball. The Lady Panthers also made history by having three of their players selected for All-Conference First Team honors, which marked the most selections the program has ever received.

Southern clinches spot in SWAC tourney


Jaguars top Prairie View, 76-64

The Southern University men’s basketball team has discovered its poise down the stretch, at the right time. In games, and for its season.

The Jaguars secured a spot in next week’s Southwestern Athletic Conference with a balanced 76-64 win over Prairie View on Thursday night at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.

Urban Youth Academy hosting tourney

Bethune-Cookman, Southern University on display in SoCal

The Major League Baseball Urban Youth Academy has become a true baseball gathering place, and that will become more evident when the academy hosts its first Urban Invitational Baseball Tournament this weekend in Compton, California.

Two historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), Bethune-Cookman University (Daytona Beach, Fla.) and Southern University (Baton Rouge, La.), will face off against local powerhouses UCLA and USC. The Urban Invitational was created, in part, to showcase the many uses for the academy, but, more importantly to bring attention to the two universities visiting Southern California.
