AMES, Iowa - Melvin Ejim recorded 15 points and a career-high 15 rebounds to help Iowa State hold off Mississippi Valley State, 67-65 Saturday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum.
The Cyclones shot a season-low 34.4 percent and had an 18-point lead trimmed down to three points late in the second half. However, the Cyclones got a strong effort from their bench, as Ejim spearheaded a 41-point outing from the reserves. Ejim, who also drilled a career-high three treys in three tries, posted his fifth career double-double in the victory.
Iowa State ends non-conference play at 10-3.
Iowa State opened the game by making just one of its first nine shots as the Delta Devils jumped out to an early 8-2 lead. The Cyclones then went on a 21-6 run to go up 28-14 with 5:56 left before intermission.
Ejim had eight points and seven rebounds in the opening period to help the Cyclones go into the break with a 36-23 lead, as ISU held MVSU to just 25.8 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes. ISU led by as many as 18 points in the first half.
Iowa State struggled to shake off the Delta Devils in the second half. After the Cyclones scored the first five points of the second period, MVSU tallied eight-straight points to cut the lead to 41-31 behind a pair of 3-pointers from Terrence Joyner.

Mississippi Valley heads to Mobile to play South Alabama
ITTA BENA, Mississippi -- Practice has had a different feel this week for Mississippi Valley State. And second-year Valley head coach Karl Morgan could get use to this. Coming off its first win in Morgan's two-year tenure, the Delta Devils have had "more pep in their step", he said during an interview.
Valley defeated Texas Southern 12-9 last Saturday to halt its 19-game losing streak, the second-longest in NCAA Football Championship Subdivision. They also snapped a 22-game SWAC losing streak.
"It was big to finally get the monkey off our back because it was validation for all the hard work we had put in," said Morgan. "We do have to get better on offense and continue not to give up big plays on defense to have a chance to start us a win streak now."
The Delta Devils (1-8) didn't have long to celebrate as they face a short week of practice because they travel to Mobile, Ala., Thursday to face South Alabama. The Jaguars (5-3) are in the process of making the transition from FCS to Football Bowl Subdivision.

Grambling State host Mississippi Valley State Saturday
GRAMBLING, La. — Homecoming and a winless opponent. Sounds like a recipe for success for Grambling State University on Saturday, doesn't it? Whoa, not so fast.
"While it's great to be at home and having all of the alumni events and grads coming back, it can also be a little distracting," admitted Doug Williams, the Tigers' head coach. "There is always so much going on, it's a challenge to keep the team focused.
"For the players and coaches, there's still a football game to be played and that's what we've got to deal with."
Serving as Grambling State's 2 p.m. homecoming foe at Robinson Stadium will be Mississippi Valley State (0-7, 0-6), which has yet to win in seven games. And the Delta Devils' overall losing streak of 18.games is the second longest in the country. The last time Valley won a game was in November of 2009 when they defeated Lincoln University 16-6.

Jackson State Tigers travels to winless Mississippi Valley
Itta Bena, Mississippi -- Who was the starting quarterback when Mississippi Valley State last defeated Jackson State?
Moss Point native Keith Poindexter helped lead the Delta Devils to an 18-16 victory in 1994. Jackson State has won the last 16 games in the series. Jackson State (4-1, 5-1 SWAC) looks to continue its dominance over the hapless Delta Devils (0-6, 0-5) on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Rice-Totten Stadium.
The Tigers could easily be undefeated, falling to Alabama State 28-21 last month at home.
Quarterback Casey Therriault has been up and down this season, capable of throwing for 400 yards as well as tossing five interceptions.

Mississippi Valley wide receiver knows discipline
ITTA BENA, MS -- Back home in Franklin, Mississippi Valley State wide receiver Paul Cox (#84) had discipline instilled in his household at an early age. After all, his dad, Paul Cox Sr., is a master sergeant in the U.S. Army and his mom, Monica Cox, works at the clerk of courts for the St. Mary Parish court house.
“They always talked about discipline, discipline, discipline,” Cox said. “When I was younger, I never understood why my family was so hard on me.”
It was his family’s discipline that molded him into the man and football player he is today, Cox said. At seven years old, he recalls playing flag football in Morgan City, where his grandfather constantly told him to never quit, never stop, and to be the fastest person on the field.
After playing at Patterson High under Timmy Minton, Cox decided to play his college football outside of Louisiana. Despite interest from schools like Louisiana Tech, Nicholls State and Louisiana-Lafayette, Cox turned to Mississippi Valley State, in Itta Bena, Miss.

Despite mistakes, Southern University hangs on to beat MVSU
ITTA BENA, Miss. — At least once before, they’d been burned on this play. They knew that at some point, they’d see it again.
So in the final minute of Southern’s sloppy-but-important 28-21 victory Saturday at Rice-Totten Stadium, with fans screaming, momentum shifting and Mississippi Valley State facing a fourth-and-9 it had to convert, defensive tackle Dexter James prepared for the most important play. He adjusted his face mask and placed one hand on the grass.
A few yards behind him, linebacker Jamie Payton took his place and stood firm. They prepared for anything, but they both had a sneaking suspicion. They watched for a screen.
Payton: “As soon as they snapped the ball and let the defensive line go through, I knew it had to be a screen coming from somewhere.”

Douglas answers the call for SU
ITTA BENA, Miss. — When the call came, quarterback J.P. Douglas expected it. Southern’s freshman backup knows the drill by now.
Saturday afternoon at Rice-Totten Stadium, in an ugly-but-important 28-21 win against Mississippi Valley State, the Southern offense was moving, but it often struggled to reach the goal line. The starter, Dray Joseph, mixed a handful of masterful moments with the occasional mistake.
And a vicious wind, coming in from the north and gusting to 20 mph, didn’t allow for many easy throws. But that didn’t really make a difference. Second-year coach Stump Mitchell has said all along he wants Douglas to play a little in every game — and in three of the past four weeks, he’d been true to his word. So when Mitchell told Douglas to hit the field at the start of the third quarter Saturday, Douglas said he knew what to do.

Winless Valley on the rise
Baton Rouge, LA -- After a tough opening month, this is the kind of game the Southern football team really needs. This figures to be an easier week. This one is a no-brainer. Or is it?
At 2 p.m. Saturday in Itta Bena, Miss., the Jaguars (1-3, 1-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference) face winless Mississippi Valley State (0-4, 0-3) in Rice-Totten Stadium.
At first glance, the game looks like it’s made to order for the Jaguars, who need a feel-good moment after losing fourth-quarter leads in crushing back-to-back losses against Jackson State and Florida A&M. But take a closer look. It’s possible this game won’t be the gimme it appears to be.
