Morehouse 38, Stillman 34: Late turnover costly for Stillman Tigers

TUSCALOOSA | Turnovers kept Stillman College in the game, but it was a costly turnover made by the Tigers’ offense that put the game out of reach and helped Morehouse College to a 38-24 win Saturday.

With just under four minutes left, Stillman got the ball back trailing by a touchdown. Quarterback Desmond Holloway fumbled the snap, and Olajawaun Gooch picked it up for Morehouse and ran it back 35 yards for a touchdown.

“That’s the nature of our football team,” Morehouse head coach Rich Freeman said. “We’ve got a lot of guys who are very capable of making big plays, explosive plays.”

Tuskegee defeats Morehouse

COLUMBUS, GA -- Nykeem Barton wanted to make his final Tuskegee-Morehouse Football Classic a lot like all the others in which he has played. The senior running back rushed for three touchdowns and No. 18 Tuskegee's defense squashed a second-half rally to hand No. 16 Morehouse its first loss of the season, 31-15 Saturday at A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium.

It was the seventh straight win in the series for Tuskegee (5-1, 4-1 SIAC), which improved to 66-27-7 all-time against Morehouse (5-1, 4-1). Barton scored on a 2-yard run on the Golden Tigers’ first possession and his 7-yard run, and subsequent two-point conversion run, in the second quarter put Tuskegee ahead 21-2 at halftime.

Tuskegee Downs No. 16 Morehouse College

The high-scoring offense failed to launch for the first time this season and Morehouse fell, 31-15, to the Tuskegee Golden Tigers, in the 75th Annual Tuskegee-Morehouse Football Classic.

Morehouse's 15 points and 213 total yards were season lows, for the team that averaged 40 points and 366 yards per game. The Maroon Tigers dropped to 5-1; Tuskegee improved to 5-1.

Tuskegee jumped out to a 7-0 lead less than two minutes into the game. An eight-yard touchdown pass, early in the second quarter, pushed the lead to 13-0. But the Morehouse defense blocked the point-after attempt and Darrius Williams returned the football for a two-point score.

A seven-yard touchdown run gave the Golden Tigers a 21-2 halftime lead. In the third quarter, the teams traded scores. Morehouse linebacker Charlie Wilson blocked a punt that Samuel Gilmore returned 36-yards for a touchdown. Tuskegee kicked a 22-yard field goal.

Howard, Morehouse may renew football rivalry

The college football rivalry between Howard and Morehouse, which began in 1923 but has been dormant for more than a decade, is close to being resurrected.

Officials from both of the historically black schools are nearing an agreement to play each other annually at RFK Stadium, beginning next year. Howard and Morehouse, an all-male school in Atlanta, played regularly in the 1980s and 1990s but last met in 1997, when the Bison handed the Maroon Tigers, then coached by former Redskins quarterback Doug Williams, a 52-0 beating at Howard's Greene Stadium.

Tuskegee-Morehouse Football Classic: Coaches favor splitting SIAC ...

When the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced in September it would split the 10-team conference into East and West divisions, beginning next season, it did not leave coaches with much time to ponder the ramifications.

But Tuskegee coach Willie Slater and Morehouse coach Rich Freeman said Thursday they are mostly positive about the upcoming changes. They spoke during a press conference promoting Saturday's 75th annual Tuskegee-Morehouse Football Classic, to be played at A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium.

Morehouse Tigers improve to 5-0 in 30-14 win over Lincoln (Mo.) Blue Tigers

Atlanta, GA - David Carter rushed for 211 yards and a touchdown and powered Morehouse to a 30-14 win over Lincoln University. At 5-0, the Maroon Tigers are enjoying the best season start since 1930.

After surrendering a 99-yard touchdown return on the opening kick, Morehouse settled down and limited the visiting Blue Tigers (1-3) to one touchdown the rest of the way.

The Maroon Tigers bounced back on their first possession with a seven-play, 68-yard drive that was capped off by a Carter one-yard touchdown run. Ian Mullen’s point-after attempt was blocked.

On the next Lincoln possession, defensive lineman Chigbo Anunoby, who played at Lincoln last year, forced a Blue Tiger fumble that led to a 33-yard Mullen field goal and game Morehouse a 9-7 advantage.

Morehouse highlights against Kentucky State (last week)

Kentucky State Thorobreds fall to Morehouse Maroon Tigers

Coming off a big win last week over Benedict, the Kentucky State football team missed their opportunity to start a winning steak on Saturday, falling 41-25 to Morehouse College at B.T Harvey Stadium. Although they racked up 389 yards to Morehouse’s 361, the Thorobreds couldn’t score when it mattered most against the Maroon Tigers, who entered the game 3-0 on the season.

Sophomore quarterback Byron Ingram led an explosive Morehouse passing attack, racking up three touchdowns in the first quarter. Junior Jamar Rodriguez and senior Robert Darby-McNair were on the receiving end of Ingram’s first quarter strikes. Sporting a 20-0 lead, Ingram struck again at the 5:22 mark in the second quarter with a 4-yard touchdown pass to junior Derrick Hector.

MOREHOUSE'S 4-0 BEST START SINCE 1935

ATLANTA, GA – Byron Ingram threw for five touchdowns – three of them to Robert Darby-McNair – and Morehouse beat Kentucky State Thorobreds, to go to 4-0 and the best start to a season since 1935.

Ingram, a 6’-5” sophomore from Atlanta, tied the Morehouse single-game record of five touchdown passes, set by Jimmie Davis, also against Kentucky State, in 1987. In contrast to last week’s 49-6 win over Lane, which featured an overwhelming ground game, Saturday’s game showcased the Maroon Tigers’ aerial attack.

Four touchdown passes by Ingram gave Morehouse a comfortable lead, until a one-yard KSU rushing touchdown took the halftime score to 27-7. Ingram completed first-half touchdown passes to Jamar Rodriguez, for 41 yards, Derrick Hector, for four yards, and two to Darby-McNair, for 17 and 55 yards.

Morehouse crushes Lane, goes to 3-0

Morehouse is serving notice to the SIAC that they are for real. Just as clear though: Lane College isn’t a team by which to judge that. The Maroon Tigers (3-0, 2-0) pounded Lane 49-6, taking advantage of some, but not all, of Lane’s many miscues. The Dragons routinely went backward on offense, some which could be credited to the Morehouse defense, but some was the result of bad snaps, poor decisions and fumbled punt attempts.

David Carter led Morehouse with 71 yards in the first half. Derrin Nettles had 15 tackles and a sack, and Chigbo Annunoby had 13 tackles.

FVSU loses home opener to Morehouse

FORT VALLEY, GA — Morehouse took advantage of a variety of Fort Valley State mistakes and made the Wildcats’ defense work extra in downing FVSU 47-34 on Saturday night at Wildcat Stadium. FVSU fell to 1-1 while Morehouse improved to 2-0, the same for both in SIAC play. The Wildcats play Savannah State on Saturday at Henderson Stadium in Macon.

Morehouse avenged last year’s 36-13 loss by coming out strong, making FVSU pay for mistakes and then holding off the Wildcats’ rallies throughout the night. The Maroon Tigers won 38-35 at FVSU in 2008.

14-year-old college student to speak at scholarship fundraiser

Stephen Stafford II, in front of MLK statue on Morehouse College campus. The triple-major (math, computer science and pre-med) child prodigy will receive his college degrees in 2012, and will go on to Morehouse School of Medicine. Georgia law requires a student to be 16 to graduate high school, so he will be getting his high school diploma the same year he receives his college degrees. Stephen is from Lithonia, Georgia and was home schooled by his mother, Michelle Brown-Stafford (SEE Web Link Below).

Scholars of Minnesota-COPE Project is holding its Fifth Annual Scholarship Program Fundraiser/Gala on Sunday, August 15, 2010, from 4 to 8:30 pm at the Airport Hilton Hotel/Bloomington, Minnesota. This year’s guest speaker for the evening will be scholar/child prodigy Stephen Stafford II, a 14-year-old student currently attending Morehouse College.

According to Stafford’s biographical statement, “…Whe Stephen’s parents enrolled him in Stanford University’s Education Program for Gifted Youth, that Stephen soared into advanced mathematics and began mastering… geometry at age seven and algebra two years later.

“Soon after, Stephen was then allowed to audit a course at Morehouse College once his talents outpaced his mother’s ability to teach him. There Stephen scored the highest averages in both his college honors algebra and pre-calculus at the age of 11 and was honored by the college’s mathematics department.

“Stephen uses his gifts in mathematics and computer science to uplift other students. Stephen tutors students in K-12 schools as well as students twice his age enrolled at Morehouse in both subjects. He also lends his programming talents to projects on campus while offering technical assistance in the college’s computer lab.

“In addition, Stephen speaks to youth in schools, churches and community organizations in hopes that they will choose education as a means to better their lives. Stephen has even contributed his talents and notoriety to scholarship committees for the purpose of making education available to more youth.”

The COPE Project mentors community youth, provides scholarships, and acknowledges outstanding students in the metropolitan areas.
