NCAA Invites should go to best conference record
In a stretch from 2005 to 2007, Greg Jackson's Delaware State Hornets were the toast of the MEAC, winning 32 of a possible 36 league games over that two-year span. Yet they were never able to go dancing. That's because the NCAA mistakenly rewards teams for reeling off three or four consecutive wins in a conference tournament rather than handing out a bid to the NCAA tournament for a body of work compiled in more than three months. Makes no sense.
Delaware State University Hornets men's head basketball coach Greg Jackson.
"The NCAA needs to change it," Jackson said. "One team gets hot and all you've done is null and void." Sure, the NCAA recently implemented a rule in which any team that wins their regular-season title receives an automatic bid to the NIT. But what kid these days grows up with dreams of playing in the NIT? No one. Delaware State was 16-2 in league play in 2005-06 but watched a Hampton team that was 10-8 in conference action go to the NCAA tournament. The next season the Hornets finished with an identical mark yet this time it was Florida A&M and its 12-6 mark that wound up getting automatic inclusion via three wins in March.
It wasn't the only time that Florida A&M pulled the upset either. The Rattlers were 12-19 overall back in 1999 and pulled off the upset to win the league tournament and get into the Big Dance.

Bethune-Cookman comes up short vs. Morgan State Bears
Without a doubt, Coach Todd Bozeman's Morgan State Bears are the hottest program in the Mid-Majors. The 2009 MEAC Champion Bears have moved to No. 17 in the latest Mid-Major Poll.
BALTIMORE, MD -- Troy Smith made two free throws with 37 seconds left and Morgan State overcame Bethune-Cookman 48-47 on Monday night to remain perfect in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The Bears trailed 42-38 with 4:34 left, before scoring five straight. Smith's 3-point play put Morgan State up 43-42 with 2:56 remaining. The Wildcats regained the lead, 47-46, on a Jarrell Thomas 3 with 1:02 left. After Smith's free throws put the Bears up, B-CU had two chances for the win. C.J. Reed missed a jumper with 6 seconds left and Albert Abrahams, who came down with the offensive rebound, missed a layup with 4 seconds left, giving the Bears their eighth-straight win. The Bears shot 34 percent (16-of-47) from the field and the nation's No. 6 scorer, Reggie Holmes (22.8 points per game), was held to six points.

College Basketball Conference Power Rankings—New Year Edition
MEAC and SWAC basketball has absolutely nothing to talk about this season other than Morgan State and its leading scorer Reggie Holmes. Both conferences football playing schools would be better served to move that scholarship money from basketball to football and play non-scholarship basketball for 2011 and beyond. They couldn't possible do any worst than what they have shown the past decade.
28. MEAC (Morgan State, Bethune Cookman, NC A&T) 38-81 (31.9 %)
The MEAC already has four teams with 10 or more losses, and only three teams from the MEAC are above .500 (Morgan State, South Carolina State, Bethune-Cookman). Morgan State is the only respectable team from the MEAC, led by one of the nation's leading scorers, Reggie Holmes. It is hard to tell if South Carolina State has the potential to be good because they got crushed by Miami and Iowa, but then played Clemson to the buzzer. Bethune-Cookman does not deserve to be .500. Three of their seven wins are against Division II schools, and two of them are against Independents.
33. SWAC (Prarie View A&M, Alabama A&M, Texas Southern) 22-88 (20.0 %)
Last, and most certainly least, is the SWAC. Alcorn State is most likely the worst team in college basketball. Up until Wednesday night, they had lost every game 15, most of their losses being by much more. On Wednesday night, they played their first home game and only lost to Central Michigan by four. The SWAC has five teams with at least 10 losses. Not one team is an even .500. Two teams are winless (Alcorn State and Arkansas Pine Bluff), and Alabama State and Mississippi Valley State do not have any wins against Division I teams.
