Morgan State Bears Football to Face North Dakota State University Bison

Morgan State University has an East versus West date with perennial NCAA Division I FCS power North Dakota State University Bison of the Missouri Valley Conference. The game will be played at the Bison home field at the Fargodome, Fargo, North Dakota.

FARGO, N.D.-- North Dakota State University finalized its 2010 football schedule with a 6 p.m. home game against Morgan State University on Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010 in the Fargodome. NDSU director of athletics Gene Taylor made the announcement today. The Bison have six home games on the 2010 schedule.

Morgan State University is a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). Head coach Donald Hill-Eley led the Bears were 6-5 last season and tied for fourth in the MEAC with a 4-4 record. Morgan State returns six starters on offense and six on defense. It is the first meeting between the Bison and the Bears.

The Morgan State game is the first of three in a row at home after NDSU opens at the University of Kansas of the Big 12 Conference on Saturday, Sept. 4. The Bison will face a rejuvenated Jayhawks program under first year head coach Turner Gill (formerly at University of Buffalo). Gill has a familiar MEAC name on his staff in coach Lee Fobbs, serving as Director of High School Relations/Player Development. Fobbs served as head football coach at North Carolina A&T State University in 2006-08, ending his head coaching career at 2-28.

After Kansas, the Bison will play at University of Northern Iowa in the Missouri Valley Football Conference opener on Saturday, Sept. 11. The Bison are scheduled to entertain the University of South Dakota at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25 and Western Illinois at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2 in the annual homecoming game.

North Dakota State then embarks on Missouri Valley Conference Football road trips to Youngstown State on Oct. 9 and Illinois State on Saturday, Oct. 16. The Bison return home for three in a row with Indiana State in the Harvest Bowl with the game time to be determined on Oct. 23, Southern Illinois at 3 p.m. Nov. 6, and South Dakota State in the Dakota Marker game at 3 p.m. Nov. 13.

NDSU closes out the season at Missouri State on Saturday, Nov. 20.

North Dakota State averaged 16,515 spectators over five home dates in the Fargodome and placed ninth in the 2009 Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) attendance figures released by the NCAA. NDSU had a season-high 18,608 spectators in the Fargodome for the 27-24 loss to Illinois State on Oct. 3, 2009. The football program has enjoyed seven sellouts over the past four seasons including a school record 19,053 against South Dakota State in 2006. The Bison are 30-9 in the Fargodome over the past seven years under head coach Craig Bohl.

North Dakota State finished the 2009 season with a 3-8 record overall including a 2-6 mark in the MVFC.

The Morgan State Bears have completed an exceptional schedule for 2010. The Bears opens with in-state rival Bowie State University Bulldogs of the CIAA on Sept. 4 at Hughes Stadium. The teams last played in 2006, and the Bears edged the Bulldogs by a score of 28-20.

The Bears return six starters on the defensive side of the ball including #7 Darren McKhan, senior defensive back Miramar H.S./U. Connecticut, from Miami, Florida.

In the first meeting ever on the gridiron, Morgan State will take on Atlantic Coast Conference bottom dweller, the University of Maryland Terrapins. The Bears will be meeting the Terps at a good time as they finished last season with a 2-10, 1-7 ACC record. Don't expect much improvement this season under head coach Ralph Friedgen who cannot recruit the best players from Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia. The Bears should give the Terps a tough game with their lights out defense.

The Bears thereafter will travel to Fargo, N.D. on September 18 to prove MEAC supremacy with a stampede of the North Dakota State Bison. After chomping up on the Bison, the Bears will travel to the New Meadowlands Stadium at East Rutherford, N.J., for the 39th Annual New York Urban League Football Classic. There, the Bears will continue their "undefeated streak" with MEAC rival Howard University Bison.

Morgan Sweeps Rival Coppin State, 65-56 on Senior Night

Corin 'Tiny' Adams is Bears' all-time leading scorer of either gender.

The petite 5-foot-5 guard from Brooklyn, New York, turned down Syracuse University in 2006, to come run the show for the Lady Bears for four straight season.

BALTIMORE, MD - Playing in her final home game at Hill Field House, Corin Adams, scored 16 of her game-high 20 points in the first half and fellow senior Kristina Rosario pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds to go with six points, as Morgan State defeated crosstown rival Coppin State, 65-56 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference season finale on Thursday night.

Theresa Davis came off the bench due to senior night and chipped in with 13 points to help the Lady Bears close out the regular season with a 9-1 home mark. Adams, who entered the contest with 535 points this season, finished the regular season with 555, setting the single season scoring record, which she set last season with 547 points.

With the victory Morgan State improved to 17-12 on the season and 12-4 in the MEAC and likely will enter next week’s league tournament as the third seed. Their 12-4 conference mark ties the school record for MEAC victories and is the best overall record, surpassing the 12-6 mark set by the 1999-2000 team.

Maryland (Morgan State, Towson) Football Act unlikely to pass

Morgan State University gets short end of the stick as Colonial Athletic Conference Towson University backs out of supporting Delegate Jay Walker's bill. TU dropped Baltimore rivalry game with the Bears this season to open at Indiana on 9/2/2010 in a money game. MSU and TU are located 4.8 miles from each other, and 31 miles from the University of Maryland.

AD Hermann blocks bill that would require TU to play Terps.

A proposed bill that would force the University of Maryland play both Towson University and Morgan State University in football at least once every four years will most likely not pass, following a hearing in front of the state appropriations committee. State delegate Jay Walker (D), author of the Maryland Football Act, is not optimistic about its fate.

“I think Maryland would like to say ‘Hey, let us do this on our own,’” Walker, a former NFL quarterback and Howard University star, said. “With Morgan State playing Maryland next year and Towson playing Maryland the following year, we want to ensure that it doesn’t happen once in a lifetime.” Towson athletic director Mike Hermann was present at the hearing but was not in support of the bill. Towson is scheduled to play Maryland in 2011 and is working towards doing so again in 2015, according to Hermann.

“For me and for Towson, it’s an awkward situation,” Hermann said. “We want to play Maryland on a regular basis and we are on a path to do so. We are not in favor of the legal requirement not because we don’t want to do it, but I don’t think it should be legally required or that the state legislature should be stepping into college football scheduling. We want to play Maryland regularly and we see great value in that for our fans, for the media buzz it would create and for our student athletes.”

Morgan falls to S.C. State, 71-68

South Carolina State punctured Morgan State's aura of invincibility at Hill Field House on Monday night and dealt the Bears their first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference loss in nearly a year, 71-68. Led by Jason Flagler's 24 points, the Bulldogs hit 57.1 percent of their shots and held a 12-point lead with 6:39 to play. But Morgan had one final run and narrowly missed pulling off a dramatic comeback when a pair of 3-point shots missed in the final seconds.

The Bears battled foul trouble - they lost leading scorer Reggie Holmes and DeWayne Jackson in the final minute - but still got to within 70-68 on a runner by Joe Davis with 21 seconds left. Both teams missed free throws in the final minute. "It's a great win on their floor because they're a great team in our conference," South Carolina State coach Tim Carter said. "It's a great win because you don't go on their floor and beat them. We did a tremendous job executing the game plan, but we were frazzled the last two minutes."

Maryland Bill would mandate Morgan State, Towson football match-ups with the Terps

Maryland Delegate Jay "Sky" Walker has introduced legislation that would require the University of Maryland to play the Tigers (Towson) and Bears (Morgan State) once every four years in a "money" football game. Terps, Tigers and Bears! Oh, my!

Bill would mandate Towson, Morgan State football match-ups

The University of Maryland Terrapin football team is scheduled to play Morgan State this fall (Sept. 11, 2010) and Towson in 2011. But if a state legislator has his way, there might be rematches — a lot of them. Del. Jay "Sky" Walker (D-Prince George’s) has introduced a bill requiring the Terps to play either Morgan State or Towson once every four years, arguing it would help fund the two smaller schools’ football programs. But university officials are opposing the bill, saying it would strip the Athletics Department of flexibility in scheduling and force it to subsidize the smaller programs.

“The university should be making its decisions on scheduling football, not the legislature,” university lobbyist Ross Stern said. “This really is stepping on the university’s autonomy.” The Terps are generally regarded as the most prestigious football program in the state, but Walker said the state’s two Football Championship Series (formerly called Division 1-AA) teams would benefit financially and otherwise from playing their in-state ACC counterpart. Instead of playing out-of-state FCS schools, he said, the Terps should play the Tigers or the Bears.

“It’s definitely about keeping money in the state of Maryland,” said Walker, a former NFL quarterback who also works as a college football commentator for ESPN. “In the past two years, Maryland has played James Madison and Delaware, which are both FCS schools. We have two FCS schools right here in Maryland. “Now we can have these schools play all the time, not just once in a lifetime,” added Walker, who starred for Howard University before playing for the New England Patriots, Barcelona Dragons and Minnesota Vikings as a professional in the 1990s.

House bill would require more in-state matchups

State Del. Jay Walker, an ESPN college football commentator and former NFL player, has introduced House Bill 482, the Maryland Football Act, which would require the University of Maryland, a Football Bowl Subdivision school, to play at least one game every four years against Morgan State or Towson, two Football Championship Subdivision schools. Walker said he was inspired to create the bill when he saw Maryland schedule FCS team James Madison instead of one of the state schools.

"The football commentator in me understands football," Walker said. "The legislator in me sees a way to help fund the football programs at our FCS schools properly. We've got one flagship program, Maryland, and two FCS teams, Towson and Morgan State. When you see Maryland play James Madison, you say: 'Wait - we have Towson and Morgan State. They could do so much for their programs with the proceeds from that game.' "And Morgan and Towson should have the ability to play Maryland more than once in a lifetime. We want to see it happen on a more frequent basis."

Jay Walker, Maryland State Delegate

Note to Fans: In the past, Maryland has scheduled games with Football Championship Subdivision (formerly 1-AA) Colonial Athletic Conference (CAA) members James Madison, William and Mary and Villanova. Towson is also a member of the CAA and is scheduled to open the 2010 season at Indiana (money game). The Tigers recently have played money games at Northwestern (2009) and Navy (2008). Morgan State (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) has played money games at Akron (2009), Rutgers (2008) and San Jose State (2004). Both are experienced at taking a butt kicking and picking up a $100,000 to $350,000 check from the home team. If Maryland does not want to play Tigers and Bears --the 1-AA Howard Bison (MEAC) are less than 15 miles away from Byrd Stadium and does not recruit the same type student/athletes as Maryland. Howard standards are higher on the academics.

No excuse for the Terps not playing two local teams twice in a decade which are located within a 50 mile radius of College Park. "Sky" Walker is right--keep some of the money in Maryland and give the local teams an opportunity to knock off the Terrapins. We expect House Bill 482 to get some traction with the push from state delegates from Towson and Morgan. All three are state-supported and funded schools. Terps, Tigers and Bears! Oh my!

Morgan State Bears 87, Long Island Blackbirds 70

MEAC leading scorer Reggie Holmes leads Bears over Blackbirds in University of Tennessee-Chattanooga Dr. Pepper Classic.

Recap: Long Island vs. Morgan State

Reggie Holmes scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Morgan State Bears to an 87-70 win over the Long Island Blackbirds in the consolation game of the Dr. Pepper Classic at McKenzie Arena. Kevin Thompson scored 13 points and collected 17 rebounds for the Bears (8-5), who were upended by Eastern Kentucky in the event last night. Troy Smith added 16 points and DeWayne Jackson tallied 15 points and seven boards off the bench for Morgan State.

Kyle Johnson had 21 points to pace the Blackbirds (4-8), who have now dropped five in a row. Jamal Olasewere added 13 points, David Hicks scored 12, and Michael Culpo finished with 10 points in the loss. LIU jumped out to a 27-19 lead on a layup by Culpo at the 10:09 mark of the opening half. However, the Bears responded with a quick 9-2 flurry, and they would eventually head to the locker room with a 42-38 halftime advantage. The Bears were simply too much in the second stanza, as they shot 54.8 percent from the floor and knocked down 6-of-9 three-pointers to pull away.

Men's Basketball Outlasted by Morgan State at Dr Pepper Classic

Chattanooga, Tenn. – The Long Island University men’s basketball team was unable to keep pace with an experienced Morgan State squad, falling 87-70 on Wednesday night in the consolation contest at the Dr Pepper Classic in McKenzie Arena. The Blackbirds held a lead for much of the first half and were close early in the second half before the Bears began to pull away.

Long Island (4-8) took a lead early in the contest after rolling off seven unanswered points. Freshman Jamal Olasewere sandwiched two pairs of foul shots around a three-point play by junior Kyle Johnson to give LIU a 12-6 lead at the 16:02 mark in the opening half. Kevin Thompson snapped the run, but the Johnson and sophomore Michael Culpo connected on three pointers in three straight LIU possessions to keep the Bears at bay. Freshman Kenny Onyechi and Culpo hit back-to-back layups to give the Blackbirds their largest lead of the day at 27-19 with 10:09 to play in the opening period.

Morgan State (8-5) promptly held LIU to just three field goals the rest of the half and outscored the Blackbirds, 23-11, to take a four-point lead into halftime. Troy Smith led the charge with seven points during the extended run, including a pair of foul shots with 0:03 left in the period to make it 42-38 at the intermission.

A three-pointer by Culpo got LIU within 50-44 early in the second half, but that was as close as it would be the rest of the way. Morgan State used a 16-4 spurt over the next 6:29 to build an 18-point cushion. DeWayne Jackson scored the final three points in a run of 11 unanswered points to make it 66-48 with 9:32 to play. The Blackbirds managed to cut the deficit to 79-66 with 2:34 to play on a driving layup by junior David Hicks, but Jackson answered with a three-pointer at the other end to push the game out of reach. Reggie Holmes capped the scoring on a jumper with 0:45 left sending LIU to its fifth straight defeat.

Virginia Award named for Richmond -- Morgan State gridiron great Willie Lanier

RICHMOND, Va. -- The greatest football player ever to come out of Richmond wasn't recruited by Virginia or Virginia Tech. When Willie Lanier graduated from Maggie Walker High School in 1963, those schools weren't an option for him. College football still was a segregated game, so the best African-American players went to play in the CIAA or MEAC. Lanier had a scholarship offer from Virginia State College, now Virginia State University, but he turned that down because he wanted to escape the segregation that still ruled the South.

Instead, he called Morgan State College coach Earl "Papa Bear" Banks, who told him he could play but that he had no scholarships to give. It didn't take long for Lanier to earn a scholarship. By his senior season, he was a Small College All-American and attracting the attention of pro scouts. Lanier went on to become one of the greatest linebackers in football history. He earned a place in both the College and Pro Football halls of fame. He also returned to Richmond and became a successful businessman and community leader.

Q&A with Morgan State coach Todd Bozeman

There will be a mix of new and old on the roster of the defending MEAC champions this season. Nine players return from Morgan State’s NCAA tournament team, but Bears head coach Todd Bozeman is adding five new faces to the mix. Point guard Danny Smith (5-11, 190 pounds), combo guard Joe Davis (6-0, 180), shooting guard Jarrod Denard (6-2, 185), power forward DeWayne Jackson (6-8, 210) and center Anthony Anderson (6-10, 235) will all suit up for Morgan State this season.

Morgan State University Bears Coach Todd Bozeman has a new contract and a top-notch incoming class of multidimensional players.

Smith, a Randallstown native and Woodlawn graduate, will have two years of eligibility remaining after playing at Western Nebraska Community College the past two seasons. Davis, a junior from Warrensville, Ohio, sat out last year as a transfer from Cleveland State, where he averaged 8.8 points per game in his first two seasons. Denard was a highly touted shooting guard from Philadelphia’s Freire Charter School. Jackson, a Bowie High graduate, and Anderson, a LaPlata alumnus, both enrolled at Morgan one year ago and sat out as non-qualifiers. They will each have four years of eligibility remaining. Bozeman spoke with Recruiting Report recently about Morgan State’s incoming class.

Morgan State gives Coach Bozeman an ultimatum

Coach Bozeman results speak well about his value to Morgan State and the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Bozeman is the 2009 Hugh Durham Mid-Major Coach of Year; produced consecutive postseason berths for a program that had one winning season in the 26 years before he got there; won the last two regular-season MEAC titles, and gone to the NIT and the NCAA.

At the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament in mid-March, commissioner Dennis Thomas went out of his way to tell the media they needed to give Todd Bozeman and Morgan State more credit for the school's remarkable turnaround in basketball. Better he should have addressed Morgan's president, Dr. Earl Richardson, who seems to conveniently have forgotten March Madness almost as soon as it ended for the Bears. Almost five weeks after Morgan made its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division I tournament, Bozeman still doesn't have a new contract. His original three-year deal, at a university-friendly salary of $135,000 per year, has expired.

Negotiations that started before the season have gone nowhere. Last week they reached a nadir, when the school gave Bozeman an ultimatum: officials told the coach to take their offer or they would pull it off the table. This for the coach who produced consecutive postseason berths for a program that had one winning season in the 26 years before he got here. Bozeman's Bears have won the last two regular-season MEAC titles, and gone to the NIT and the NCAA.

Remembering Marvin Webster (Morgan State), Once a Knicks Savior

He came to New York to be a savior. He was on the cover of Sports Illustrated. “Can Marvin Webster turn the Knicks around?” the magazine asked. Instead, Webster — who was found dead of possible coronary artery disease in his Tulsa, Okla., hotel room Monday at the age of 56 — became one of the sadder chapters in the history of the franchise.

During a brief coaching run, Willis Reed campaigned publicly for the Knicks to sign The Human Eraser, as Webster was known, when he became a free agent. Webster had been the shot-blocking defensive hub for the rising Seattle SuperSonics during a run to the N.B.A. finals, where Seattle lost to the Washington Bullets. Reed, a great believer in post defense for obvious reasons, got his man at what was then a considerable financial cost: $650,000 a season over six years.

And then — those being the days when the league’s commissioner, Larry O’Brien, was empowered to impose compensation to the team shorn of a player — it got worse. O’Brien awarded the Sonics the Knicks’ athletic power forward, Lonnie Shelton, as well as a first-round draft choice and $450,000.

Morgan State Routs Bethune-Cookman

Boxscore

DAYTONA BEACH, FL - Reggie Holmes scored 29 points and Kevin Thompson added 16 as Morgan State defeated Bethune-Cookman 78-44 on Monday. Holmes was 6-for-11 from 3-point range and 8-for-16 from the field for Morgan State (9-9, 4-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference). Cold shooting plagued Bethune-Cookman (9-9, 4-2), which had won four of its previous six games. The Wildcats shot only 26.5 percent (13-for-49) for the game, while the Bears shot 51 percent (25-for-49), including 10-for-18 from 3-point territory.

Morgan State never trailed in the game and led 15-12 with 7:30 left in the first half. The Bears used a 19-6 run to take a 34-18 advantage at intermission. S.C. State captures MEAC, playoff berth with 32-0 victory over Morgan State

BALTIMORE, MD — Atter a 26-year absence, S.C. State will be returning to the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) playoffs after clinching the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championship with a 32-0 win over Morgan State Saturday at Hughes Stadium. The Bulldogs, who last appeared in the playoffs in 1982, earned the league’s automatic berth with the win, which lifted Coach Buddy Pough’s team to a 9-2 mark on the season and a perfect 7-0 in the league, with one game remaining.

“It’s just a great feeling,” said Pough. “Can you imagine being so close for all the six years I’ve been here and we finally got it done.” Backup quarterback DeWain Clark, in his second start in relief of Malcolm Long, directed the victory, which gave Pough his first outright title MEAC title in his seven-year tenure. S.C. State tied Hampton for the title in 2004 but Hampton went to the playoffs by virtue of a win over the Bulldogs that season.

Howard Hands Morgan State A Close Victory

Howard University "Showtime" Marching Band

As usually happens in games between Howard and Morgan State, the outcome came down to the final play. Howard punter Patrick Wolff, filling in for injured place kicker John Mendoza, missed the extra point kick in the second overtime and the Bison lost, 31-30, before a stunned, sellout homecoming crowd at Greene Stadium yesterday. Wolff, who kicked a 21-yard field goal -- the first field goal of his career -- to send the game into overtime, was consoled by several teammates after his extra-point attempt hit the right upright and bounced away.

"Everybody was telling him to shake it off," defensive tackle James Carter said. "You know it wasn't his fault. The game wasn't decided on the one kick." Though Wolff's miss ended the game, the final score was more a product of Morgan State capitalizing on Howard's miscues, missed opportunities and misfortune. The result was strangely reminiscent of the homecoming game two years ago when Morgan State returned a fumble for a touchdown in the second overtime to win, 18-12.

Week 5: MEAC/SWAC Football Updates

  • Florida A&M (3-1) vs. Tennessee State (4-1) - FAMU is giving the 4-0 TSU Tigers a clinic on Joe Taylor power football with the Rattlers driving at the start of the 4th quarter with a 28-14 lead. Kudos to Versus with an excellent telecast of the Atlanta Football Classic game, including full half-time shows by both bands. FAMU Qier Hall intercepts QB Antonio Heffner with .59 second left in game to give the TSU Tigers the loss and Joe Taylor gets his 200th career victory (200-77-2). FAMU keeps the streak alive in a hard fought battle for their 7th consecutive victory over rival TSU. Rattlers move up with 3-1 record and has served notice to all, knocking off the #23 ranked team in the FCS Rankings and the Ohio Valley Conference leader. The Rattlers are moving forward to their rightful place as the premier football program in the MEAC. The game MVP for FAMU was QB Curtis Pulley and QB Antonio Heffner was the MVP for TSU. Final score FAMU 28-21.
  • Morgan State vs. Rutgers - No surprise here as the Scarlet Knight called the dogs off in the second half, but steamrolled the Morgan Bears 38-0.
  • Bethune Cookman vs. Norfolk State - The Spartans received a bitter dose of reality in Daytona Beach as the BCU Wildcats flatten the Spartans 33-17. The Spartans are nothing more than a one season wonder with a 2-3 record on the season.
  • South Carolina State vs. Winston Salem State - SCSU Bulldogs trying to get their pride back after getting smashed by Clemson last week 54-0. Too bad for the hapless WSSU Rams as they are getting a tatto beaten on their rear at the tune of 3-31 at the end of second quarter. Update: Score 37-10 SCSU with 12 minutes left in 3rd quarter. Final score on this blowout is SCSU 43, WSSU 17.
  • Grambling State vs. Langston - GSU wins 13-2 over their visitors. Final: GSU 13, Langston 2.
  • Southern vs. Alcorn State - The Jaguars are in for a long season as they escape the lowly Braves by a score of 15-12, with all their points coming in the second half of the game.
  • Central Connecticut State University vs. Delaware State - Hornets gets pounded 28-10 by a North East Conference, 1-AA Blue Devil team that moves to 3-1 on the season with a victory over N.C. Central last weekend. DSU falls to 1-2.
  • PVAMU vs. Morehouse - The Division II Maroon Tigers gave the Panthers a fight in the Angel City Classic in Los Angeles, CA. With the 28-17 win, Prairie View moves to 4-0.
  • AAMU vs. UAPB - Monte Coleman and the Golden Lions move to 0-5 as the Bulldogs move to 2-3, winning 23-17.
  • Howard vs. Savannah State in Miami, FL - In the battle of the cupcakes, Howard gains a much needed win by pounding the helpless Tigers 49-21 in Miami, FL. Bison moves to 1-3 and SSU drops to 2-3
  • NCA&T vs. Coastal Carolina - The Aggies get embarrassed again falling on the losing end of a 20-7 score. The Lee Fobbs era may be ending soon as only 2,062 attended this contest at Aggie Stadium in Greensboro, N.C. This attendance figure has to be wrong. If not, the Aggies have lost their pride and are feed up with Fobbs and his losing ways. The Aggies fall to 2-3 on the year. CCU of the Big South Conference moves to 3-2.
  • Texas Southern vs. Concordia College - TSU is padding its record with a schedule of Division II cupcakes in Texas College and Concordia College. The Tigers are leading 45-21 in the 4th quarter over Concordia which illustrate how awful this TSU program is under-performing.

Who's Hot: FAMU Rattlers are playing superb football and has opportunity to become the league's contender with a home date with South Carolina State next weekend. Rattlers should mop the field with Buddy Pough Bulldogs who ran over the Rattlers last season when Rubin Carter was coach. It won't happen this time as the Rattlers are seeking a championship.

Greatest Surprise: PVAMU 4-0 and in the drivers seat to win the SWAC. Overall poor showing of the SWAC this football season. FAMU defense is stopping drives and scoring TDs to help offense. National televised rivalry game attracts 50,428 to Georgia Dome with gas shortages in Atlanta. MEAC Teams inability to beat Out of Conference 1-AA/FCS teams that they scheduled for their home stadiums.

Top Newcomer: FAMU QB Curtis Pulley

Dummy of the Year: The clown(s) responsible for the FAMU athletic website (http://www.famurattersport.com/) that has everything wrong or missing including current rosters for the athletic teams, posted game scores and stats, and listing two coaches no longer on Coach Joe Taylor's staff.

Morgan State vs. Towson This Saturday!

Morgan State football head coach Donald Hill-Ely will lead the Bears into battle Saturday against the cross-town rivals Towson University. With a 30-37 record, Hill-Ely is the third winningest coach in school history behind legendary coaches Eddie P. Hurt and Earl C. Banks.

College football has officially returned in Baltimore, as the Morgan State Bears will take on the Towson Tigers this Saturday, 6 p.m. at Johnny Unitas Stadium. With just five miles between each school, MSU and Towson hold a recent tradition of playing at least one of their first two games of the season against each other, and this Saturday will mark the 21st matchup between the neighboring rivals.

Last season, quarterback Sean Schaefer completed 20-of-40 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns to help Towson claim their third consecutive win over Morgan, fourth win in the last five years. Towson leads the overall series between the two schools, 15-5. The key for Morgan to break the three-game losing streak will be to contain Schaefer, who completed 29-of-47 passes for 330 yards and two touchdowns last week in their 41-13 loss against Navy.

Transfers and Morgan State Bears, Oh my!

BALTIMORE - Morgan State returns 50 of 64 lettermen from a team that went 5-6 last year. But if the Bears want to post their first winning season since 2003 and challenge for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title and automatic berth in the 16-team NCAA Tournament, the performances it receives from some of its newest players will be more important.

Bears are MEAC dark horse, but are loaded with experienced talent (Mark's Digital Photography).

Morgan State is expecting to receive an immediate boost from several transfers from Football Bowl Subdivision teams, including redshirt junior quarterback Carlton Jackson (Akron), sophomore receiver Edward Morton-Green (Miami of Ohio) and senior safety Joseph Ellis (Illinois).

“It’s one thing when you don’t know what you have, you try to push [the start of practice] as far back as you can,” Morgan State coach Donald Hill-Eley said. “But when you know you have some players coming in, and you have a chance, you can’t wait.”

ShootAround: Coppin State proves it's not the start, but the finish that counts

Tywain McKee will return to CSU for a second senior season (Prop. 48) to lead the Eagles (Mark's Digital Photography).

Going into the 2008 MEAC tournament, Coppin State was the longest of long shots. With a 12-20 overall record and a No. 7 seed, the Eagles were figured by few to have any chance of lasting more than a game or two. One Web site's formula put Coppin's chances of making the NCAA tournament at just 3 percent.

But speculative statistical algorithms are no match for March math. The Eagles won four games in five days, all in the final seconds, against the best teams in the league. All top-three seeds went down to defeat to the MEAC's mighty underdogs, as Coppin went from lost cause to the Big Dance, earning a spot in the NCAA play-in game.

Black schools winning more Fulbright awards

Parents who want to send a child to a black college know they have to look south, but if they prefer one that will also offer a good opportunity for international exposure, the right school may not be as far away as they might think.

The black college that has produced the most students who win a Fulbright fellowship, the prestige program of international exchanges, is not Howard, or Hampton University in Virginia, or Morehouse College or Spelman College in Atlanta, or any other private school.

The top producer is Morgan State University, a state school in Baltimore. Since the Fulbright program began in 1946, 120 Morgan students have won awards to conduct research or teach English in 30 different countries from Jamaica to New Zealand.
