Hampton Pirates have a happy Senior Day; Morgan St. falls 42-18
HAMPTON, Virginia -- The Pirates of Hampton University closed out the 2011 football season it great style, beating the Bears of Morgan State at Armstrong Stadium on Saturday. With the victory, the Pirates closed out the season with a 7-4 overall record and a 5-3 mark in conference play.
The Bears fell to 5-6 on the year and closed with a 4-4 record in MEAC play. Hampton got off a seemingly slow start, punting on their first possession, but they turned around and scored on their second possession, when quarterback Bradford Hudson connected with Isaiah Thomas from 10 yards out to put Hampton up 7-0.
Hampton’s defense also came ready to play in the first half, holding Morgan State to just a 33-yard field goal by Ervin Gonzalez to make the score 7-3 after two quarters. The Pirates came out in the second half firing on all cylinders behind freshman quarterback Travis Champion, who threw for 192 yards and three touchdowns in the second half alone.

Champion performance
Hampton true freshman quarterback Travis Champion had a pretty good two quarters of work on Saturday.
With the Pirates up 7-3 going into the third quarter after fellow freshman Brad Hudson had gone 6-of-13 for 59 yards and a touchdown in the first half, Champion got the ball to open the third quarter against Morgan State. The product of Rancho Verde (Calif.) High, where he threw for 2,400 yards and 28 TDs as a senior, promptly led a six-play, 63-yard scoring drive, capped by his 25-yard pass to Isiah Thomas.
Champion also threw TD passes of 33 and 27 yards as he went 13-of-17 for 192 yards, three scores and one interception. "That's not bad for a freshman," HU coach Donovan Rose said.

Norfolk State earns first MEAC championship after 47-14 win at Morgan State
BALTIMORE, Maryland -- It took Norfolk State 14 years to put itself in a position to win a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship. It took the Spartans five minutes to clinch it. Norfolk State defeated Morgan State 47-14 Saturday thanks to a 17-point scoring flurry in the first five minutes of the second half.
The win clinches the school's first MEAC championship and earns the Spartans an automatic bid to the FCS playoffs. It is the school's first FCS playoff appearance. "I feel great for them," Norfolk State coach Pete Adrian said. "They'll go down in history for the first MEAC title, and that's a great thing."

Norfolk State led 20-14 at halftime. It looked as though Norfolk State would run away with the game early on, but the Spartans had two drives stall out in the red zone in the first half. Norfolk State (9-2, 7-1 MEAC) struck quickly after the break, though.
Running back Randy Maynes scored on the first play from scrimmage in the quarter, a 56-yard run off right tackle that Maynes cut back for a touchdown. A defensive stop, a 28-yard field goal from kicker Ryan Estep and a Morgan State (5-5, 4-3) fumble on the ensuing kickoff quickly followed.

NSU cinches MEAC championship with 47-14 victory
BALTIMORE, MD - Randy Maynes took a hand-off on the first play of the second half and handed back history. With Norfolk State leading by six and only one half of football standing between it and the playoffs, Maynes took the first play of the second half and rushed 56 yards up the middle of the Morgan State defense, erasing more than a quarter-century of football failures.
The touchdown, an inside run that Maynes bounced off-tackle, set off an avalanche of points for the Spartans in a 47-14 win over Morgan State (5-5, 4-3) and began a quick transition from close contest to championship celebration. Maynes' run made the score 27-14 and the Spartans (9-2, 7-1) tacked on 10 more points over the next five minutes, making the fourth quarter a victory march.

North Carolina A&T Aggies put up strong defense
BALTIMORE, MD - North Carolina A&T used a stingy defense, three blocked field goals and big running plays from Mike Mayhew to earn a 24-3 conference win over Morgan State at Hughes Stadium on Saturday.
The Aggies defense held Morgan State to 33 yards rushing, while Mayhew finished with a career-high 233 yards rushing and one touchdown. It was their first win over Morgan State in six years and their first win at Hughes Stadium since 2003. The win also marked the Aggies (2-2, 1-0 MEAC) first road win since beating Howard in Washington, D.C., two years ago.
"All wins our big wins at this stage in our program," said N.C. A&T head coach Rod Broadway. "This is the first time in a long time we've defeated Morgan, so it's going to be a nice bus ride home. But we've got to continue to get better. We missed out on a lot of opportunities today."
In a twist of irony, Morgan State's inability to take advantage of opportunities to score touchdowns early allowed N.C. A&T to gain some confidence defensively. On the game's first play, a Lewis Kindle interception gave the Bears (2-3, 1-1) the ball at the Aggies 16-yard line.
The Bears minus-10-yard drive was highlighted by a Travis Crosby sack. Ervin Gonzalez booted a 43-yard field goal to give the Bears a 3-0 lead. Morgan State's good field position would be a trend that would continue throughout the first quarter. Three of the Bears first four drives started in Aggies territory. The one drive that did not start in Aggies territory, started at the Bears 48 after a Kindle fumble.
Each MSU good fortune was met with an Aggies rebuff. Mayhew finally turned the field position in N.C. A&T's favor late in the first quarter. A 12-yard run helped the N.C. A&T move the ball from in front of its own goal line. Mayhew then sprinted down the sideline for a 78-yard touchdown run, the longest of his career.

"Once I got off the bus today, I was feeling it," said Mayhew. "I was in that zone. My offensive line stepped up today. (Offensive line coach Keith Wagner) told us all week it was time for a 100-yard game. We've been slacking the first three games, so I'm glad we got it going today."
Saturday marked Mayhew's second career 200-yard performance. His showing also put him 17 yards shy of the 2,000-yard mark for his career. But it was the Aggies defense that allowed the Aggies to keep a comfortable lead.
After stopping the Bears on 4th-and-1 from the Aggies 47 to open the second quarter, Jose Garcia-Camacho hit a 35-yard field goal to give the Aggies a 10-3 lead. Morgan State answered by putting together its best drive of the game, a 9-play, 50-yard march that led to a 41-yard field goal attempt.
But a bobbled snap led to Terence Webb blocking the kick. With the Aggies defense playing so well, the game was put away on a 47-yard touchdown pass from Kindle to Larry Raper to close out the first half.
"We started the game in the hole with an interception and the defense held them to three," said Broadway. "I thought that set the tone. I think we gave up one 3rd down-and-14 today, but overall we were great on third down."
Senior Justin Ferrell had two blocked kicks and an interception. Brandon Hover finished with 10 tackles and a 31-yard interception return. N.C. A&T's last two wins over Morgan State has included a 200-yard rusher. Brandon Sweeney ran for 205 yards in 2005.

New York Urban League Football Classic: Turnovers doom Howard Bison in loss to Morgan State Bears
East Rutherford, NJ -- Howard University dominated the statistics but in the end, turnovers proved to be too much to overcome as Howard University fell, 14-9 to Morgan State University in the New York Urban League Classic at MetLife Stadium before 24,996.
The Bison (1-3 overall, 0-2 in the MEAC) shot themselves in the foot by turning the ball over six times including a fumble that was returned for the game’s first score.
Howard was able to set the tone early by moving the ball smartly up and down the field. But as has been the case through the early part of the season, the Bison were not able to capitalize. So the opportunistic Bears took advantage when Michael Dallas returned of three Greg McGhee fumbles for the game’s first score at the beginning of the second quarter.
“We need to throw the stats out the window and find ways to win,’ said Howard first year coach Gary Harrell. “We outgained Morgan in that category, but they won the game. We have to find ways as coaches to correct some of these problems and find ways to win these games.”
BATTLE OF THE BANDS - HALF-TIME: 2011 NEW YORK URBAN LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLASSIC
Morgan State (2-2 overall, 1-0 in the MEAC) took advantage of another Bison turnover a little over two minutes later when Kristin Johnson grabbed a three-yard pass from Robert Council to take a 14-0 lead to the locker room.

D'Alessandro: New York Urban League Football Classic is much more than a football game between Howard, Morgan State
East Rutherford, New Jersey - “So, what do you know about football?” we asked the new president of the New York Urban League, Arva Rice, in the third quarter.
“Truthfully?” she asked, gazing down from Suite 324 at the carnage of a two-touchdown rout, before dropping her voice to a hushed whisper. “Not really very much.” Same here. So let’s talk culture and history.
Nobody really wants to do that on a joyous Saturday afternoon, but the game at MetLife Stadium wasn’t much to write home about at the time of this conversation.
In fact, the priorities for the 40th annual New York Urban League Football Classic were exposed by the halftime choreography: No patron left his or her seat, the aisles were clear and the concessions guys tapped their feet as the two marching bands blew everyone away.
First Howard, then Morgan State. And the latter held the field until...

Morgan State finally makes some big plays in 13-12 win over Robert Morris
Colonials miss extra point with 1:57 remaining to clinch Bears' victory
Baltimore, MD - Morgan State safety Reshaude Miller made a play that didn't score or set up any points. But it prevented points and helped turn around Saturday's game against Robert Morris.
Miller made a leaping one-handed interception that stopped the Colonials from taking a possible 10-point lead in the first half. That seemed to awaken the sluggish Bears, and they went on to make just enough well-timed big plays to escape with a 13-12 victory over Robert Morris at Hughes Stadium.
The victory ended a six-game losing streak for Morgan State (1-2), which dropped its final four games of last season.
The Bears were looking for something to give them a lift in this game, after opening the season with lopsided losses to Towson (42-3) and Bowling Green (58-13). Big plays were missing then, but they proved helpful on Saturday.

Enders leads Towson to 42-3 rout of Morgan State
Towson, MD - On a third-and-14 early in the third quarter of Saturday's night season opener, Towson quarterback Grant Enders stoically held his ground in the pocket, and after not being able to find an open receiver, he scrambled through a pack of Morgan State defenders for a first down.
Three plays later, he found Tyler Wharton for a 12-yard touchdown. That type of versatility is expected to add a new dimension to Towson's new-look offense, which kept the Bears off-balance in a 42-3 victory before 9,759 — the third largest crowd in Johnny Unitas Stadium's history.
The Tigers' defense, which returned eight starters, was also dominant, holding Morgan State to just 160 total yards. It was the first time Towson scored more than 30 points in a regulation game since Oct. 10, 2009 — a 36-28 victory over Rhode Island. The Tigers also racked up more than 500 yards of total offense for the first time in five years.

Towson University prepares for MSU Bears
Towson, Maryland - With pre-season camp behind them, the Tigers are preparing to open the 2011 season under the lights against cross-town rival Morgan State.
The Bears are members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and will travel less than five miles down the road to Tigertown Saturday night. Of the 22 times that Morgan and Towson have met, the Tigers have won 16 of those games. Despite the series history that is in the Tigers’ favor, Head Coach Rob Ambrose said that his team is not looking past the Bears.
“In the history of the Morgan game, you can pretty much throw the records away,” Ambrose said. “It doesn’t matter what the records were before, what the records were last year, or even what happened in the last game. It’s always a dogfight. It’s always something personal. We expect a hell of a game from them, and they should expect the same from us.”
In the offseason, Morgan State Head Coach Donald Hill-Eley installed a few wrinkles to the Bears’s offense in an effort to snap Towson’s six-game home-opener winning streak.

Howard University and Morgan State University will faceoff once again in the New York Urban League Classic at the New Meadowlands Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011.
In 2010, NYUL had the first college football game ever played at New Meadowlands Stadium and we are excited about returning for the second year.

Memorial Day; Remembering Two National Champions from Morgan State
It is a tradition since the Civil War on Memorial Day to place American flags on the grave sites of soldiers, and veterans. The practice will be followed this year from Arlington National Cemetery where 300,000 flags will be placed to veterans cemeteries across the country to smaller neighborhood burial sites.
On Saturday I was able to find and place a Flag at the grave site in New Rochelle, NY of Eugene Lee Evans, a college football player of sixty years ago. Evans who was known as "Dippy" played on the CIAA national championship team of Morgan State in 1949, then as a young Army officer, died heroically in the Korean War just three years later.
His teammate in high school in Pelham, NY and later in college was Eli Page Howard, Jr. another extraordinary athlete of the late 1940s who also died while serving our country in Vietnam. Lt. Col. Howard is one of those heroes at Arlington for whom a Flag will be placed, a hero of the Vietnam War. Perhaps for a moment we can remember him as the star quarterback at Morgan College throwing the ball ...

Howard Softball Taken Down by Morgan State, 15-9
WASHINGTON, D.C. – After sacking two wins in Saturday’s doubleheader over Morgan State, the Lady Bison looked to sweep their MEAC opponent in order to increase their chances of gaining a birth to the MEAC Championship Tournament, but fell short as the Bears took game three 15-9 at Banneker Field on Sunday afternoon.
In the first inning the Lady Bison surrendered seven runs to the Bears before responding with three runs when their turn at the plate arrived. Emily Johnson led off the game with a double and Lorae Robinson singled, pushing Johnson to third. Marisa Coats scored Johnson on a RBI groundout to second base and Rebecca Kirshner homered to bring home the remaining two runs.
After shutting out the Lady Bears in the second, Robinson tied the game at 7-7 with a grand slam. Prior to Robinson’s blast out of the park, Trina Kindred singled to left, Andascha Moore doubled and Johnson walked to fill the bases.
Ciera Gordon scored to give the Bison their first lead of the game on a sacrifice fly by Kindred.
Two errors and back-to-back doubles helped the Lady Bears regained the lead after scoring five runs. Responding first for the Lady Bison was Robinson who reached base on a bunt. Marisa Coats scored Robinson on a double to right field.
In the fifth Carly Martin entered the game to relieve Emily Johnson who gave up five unearned runs on six hits. Before leaving the circle she struck out two batters and relieved starting pitcher Samantha Gatson who gave up four hits and the first four runs of the game.
The Bears scored three times increasing their lead, 15-9.
Howard attempted to take the game in the bottom of the seventh, but fell short as Johnson grounded out to the short stop for the third out of the frame – leaving Moore on second base and Martin at third.
Johnson took the loss on the mound – giving up eight runs in four innings of work. Robinson lead the Lady Bison at the plate, going 3-for-4 with four runs scored and four RBI.
The Lady Bison will take on Maryland Eastern Shore for their regular-season finale and senior day on May 7.

WNIT: Virginia rolls past Morgan State
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA -- Debbie Ryan is proud of her Celtic heritage. But on an oddly unemotional St. Patrick's Night she didn't need the luck of the Irish to prolong her coaching career at the University of Virginia.
All she needed was, well, Morgan State.
Whitny Edwards scored 11 points, and teammate Ariana Moorer added 10 as Ryan's Cavaliers thumped the overmatched Bears 69-56 Thursday night in an opening-round game of the women's postseason NIT. The victory ensured Ryan of at least one more game at the helm of a program she has steered for the past 34 years. Ryan, a Hall of Fame coach with 737 career victories, announced last week that she will step down at season's end.

Morgan State To Face Virginia On Thursday In Opening Round Of WNIT
BALTIMORE, Md. (March 15, 2011) - What a difference a year makes. Just a year ago the Lady Bears were invited to the 2010 Preseason Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) and had to decline. The WNIT committee replaced Morgan State with then three-time defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) regular season champion, North Carolina A&T. The Lady Aggies would later earn the MEAC automatic bid into the Postseason WNIT, where it made a historical run, winning two games and advancing to the Round of 16.
This time there will be no declining, as the Lady Bears, who earned the automatic berth for the MEAC, found out Monday night they will head to Charlottesville, Va. to face host University of Virginia in Round 1 action of the WNIT on Thursday, March 17. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena.
The game will air locally in the Charlottesville area on WINA 1070 AM. That broadcast will be available on the Internet at VirginiaSports.com with a subscription to Virginia Sports Online Radio. The winner of Thursday's contest will face the winner of Old Dominion vs. Loyola (Md.) in the second round.

Morgan State tops N.C. A&T
Two-time defending champion Morgan State isn't ready to give up its title just yet.
The Bears, behind junior center Kevin Thompson, were never threatened by cold-shooting N.C. A&T as they rolled 77-59 in a quarterfinal game of the MEAC tournament Thursday night at Joel Coliseum.
Thompson, a big part of the Bears' first two tournament titles in Winston-Salem, scored 24 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked three shots in 26 minutes.
Not that they needed more motivation, but the Bears, the fourth seed, have been under the radar after losing their final three regular-season games, including one to the Aggies (15-17) in Greensboro. Thompson, the projected player of the year in the conference, was selected to the all-conference second team.
Thompson Dominant In Win Over North Carolina A&T, 77-59
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Kevin Thompson put in a dominating performance, coming off the bench to pour in a gamer-high 24 points, grab 12 rebounds and block three shots to help Morgan State defeat North Carolina A&T, 77-59 in the quarterfinal round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament at the Joel Coliseum.
The Bears (16-13), the Number 4 seed, advance to the semifinal round where they will play Bethune Cookman, the Number 1 seed at 6 pm.
Thompson set the tone early in the first half when he entered the game and proceeded to score 18 points, connecting on all six of his shots from the floor. Morgan State led, 43-33 at intermission.

Lee Leads Coppin State Eagles to 73-60 Victory over Morgan State
BALTIMORE, MD -- Jordan Lee scored 19 second-half points and Coppin State snapped a six-game losing streak to Morgan State with a convincing 73-60 victory over the Bears in the regular-season finale for both teams on Thursday in the Physical Education Complex.
Lee, who was 0-for-2 from the floor in the second half, dominated the second period. He was 5-of-9 from the floor and made 5-of-8 three-point attempts.
Led by Lee, Coppin State shot a blistering 61.9 percent from the floor in the second half to overcome a 30-28 halftime deficit.
With the victory, Coppin State earned the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament. The Eagles will receive a first-round bye and will play the winner of the Norfolk State-Howard game on March 10 at 6 p.m. in Winston-Salem, N.C.
BALTIMORE, Md. (March 3, 2011)-Perhaps the only bright spot for Morgan State in the second half of Thursday evening's Battle of Baltimore “East vs. West” game against cross-town rival Coppin State, was Jamesia (Jamie) Smith's near half court shot as the final horn sounded to turn a 19-point deficit into a 16 point loss.
Coppin State's Leola Spotwood recorded a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds, both game-highs and Larrisa Carter added a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead the host Eagles to a 74-58 thumping of Morgan State in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) season finale for both teams at the Physical Education Complex (PEC).
Morgan State (16-13, 10-6 MEAC) was led by Smith, who finished with 13 points, while Theresa Davis, who was playing in her first game back, since dealing with an injury following the South Carolina State game (2/14), came off the bench to add 10 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the free throw line.
