WASHINGTON, D.C. – After sacking two wins in Saturday’s doubleheader over Morgan State, the Lady Bison looked to sweep their MEAC opponent in order to increase their chances of gaining a birth to the MEAC Championship Tournament, but fell short as the Bears took game three 15-9 at Banneker Field on Sunday afternoon.
In the first inning the Lady Bison surrendered seven runs to the Bears before responding with three runs when their turn at the plate arrived. Emily Johnson led off the game with a double and Lorae Robinson singled, pushing Johnson to third. Marisa Coats scored Johnson on a RBI groundout to second base and Rebecca Kirshner homered to bring home the remaining two runs.
After shutting out the Lady Bears in the second, Robinson tied the game at 7-7 with a grand slam. Prior to Robinson’s blast out of the park, Trina Kindred singled to left, Andascha Moore doubled and Johnson walked to fill the bases.
Ciera Gordon scored to give the Bison their first lead of the game on a sacrifice fly by Kindred.
Two errors and back-to-back doubles helped the Lady Bears regained the lead after scoring five runs. Responding first for the Lady Bison was Robinson who reached base on a bunt. Marisa Coats scored Robinson on a double to right field.
In the fifth Carly Martin entered the game to relieve Emily Johnson who gave up five unearned runs on six hits. Before leaving the circle she struck out two batters and relieved starting pitcher Samantha Gatson who gave up four hits and the first four runs of the game.
The Bears scored three times increasing their lead, 15-9.
Howard attempted to take the game in the bottom of the seventh, but fell short as Johnson grounded out to the short stop for the third out of the frame – leaving Moore on second base and Martin at third.
Johnson took the loss on the mound – giving up eight runs in four innings of work. Robinson lead the Lady Bison at the plate, going 3-for-4 with four runs scored and four RBI.
The Lady Bison will take on Maryland Eastern Shore for their regular-season finale and senior day on May 7.

WNIT: Virginia rolls past Morgan State
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA -- Debbie Ryan is proud of her Celtic heritage. But on an oddly unemotional St. Patrick's Night she didn't need the luck of the Irish to prolong her coaching career at the University of Virginia.
All she needed was, well, Morgan State.
Whitny Edwards scored 11 points, and teammate Ariana Moorer added 10 as Ryan's Cavaliers thumped the overmatched Bears 69-56 Thursday night in an opening-round game of the women's postseason NIT. The victory ensured Ryan of at least one more game at the helm of a program she has steered for the past 34 years. Ryan, a Hall of Fame coach with 737 career victories, announced last week that she will step down at season's end.

Morgan State To Face Virginia On Thursday In Opening Round Of WNIT
BALTIMORE, Md. (March 15, 2011) - What a difference a year makes. Just a year ago the Lady Bears were invited to the 2010 Preseason Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) and had to decline. The WNIT committee replaced Morgan State with then three-time defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) regular season champion, North Carolina A&T. The Lady Aggies would later earn the MEAC automatic bid into the Postseason WNIT, where it made a historical run, winning two games and advancing to the Round of 16.
This time there will be no declining, as the Lady Bears, who earned the automatic berth for the MEAC, found out Monday night they will head to Charlottesville, Va. to face host University of Virginia in Round 1 action of the WNIT on Thursday, March 17. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena.
The game will air locally in the Charlottesville area on WINA 1070 AM. That broadcast will be available on the Internet at VirginiaSports.com with a subscription to Virginia Sports Online Radio. The winner of Thursday's contest will face the winner of Old Dominion vs. Loyola (Md.) in the second round.

The Lady Bears (17-13) will face either Howard or North Carolina A&T in Friday's semifinals at 2:30 p.m. in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
With MSU trailing 33-32 after blowing a 12-point lead, Dodson scored seven of her team-high 10 points and Davis made four consecutive free throws to get their team back in front over the last 6:42 of the game. Davis' free throws with 1:32 left put the Lady Bears up for good.
UMES Falls to Morgan State
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Morgan State's Brittany Dodson sank a pair of free throws for the lead with 1:32 to play as the second-seeded Lady Bears held off a hard-charging No. 7 University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball team, 43-39, in the quarterfinals of the MEAC Tournament at Joel Coliseum Wednesday.
UMES, which battled back from a 12-point halftime deficit to take a 37-34 edge with 5:01 left, saw its season come to a close at 12-19. With the win, MSU (17-13) advances to the semifinals to play the winner of North Carolina A&T and Howard.
"We played well enough to win," said UMES head coach Fred Batchelor. "We came out flat but playing our second game in 24 hours is no excuse. I'm proud of the way we fought back.

Delaware State Snaps MSU's Streak, 70-65
DOVER, Del. – Jay Threat hit two free throws and Casey Walker drained a 3-pointer in the final moments to help Delaware State snap the Bears' 3-game winning streak with a 70-65 victory Saturday night before a packed crowd at Memorial Hall.
The Bears (8-8, 4-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) hadn't lost to Delaware State since a 56-53 overtime setback on March 9, 2007 at the semifinals of the MEAC Tournament, during Todd Bozeman's first year at the helm for Morgan State. From there, they went on to win three MEAC regular season titles, two MEAC tournament titles and two NCAA tournament appearances.
The loss also marked the first conference road loss suffered by the Bears since losing to Hampton on Feb. 23, 2009.
DSU men finally beat Morgan State
DOVER, DE -- Trevor Welcher had been the only player on the Delaware State men's basketball team who remembered what it felt like to defeat two-time defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion Morgan State.
That last happened March 9, 2007, in the conference tournament.
Welcher now has plenty of company in what had been an exclusive club after freshman forward Casey Walker drained a pivotal 3-pointer with 34 seconds remaining to spark Delaware State to a dramatic 60-55 triumph over the Bears on Saturday.
DSU women falter against Morgan State
DOVER, DE -- Things can't get much more frustrating for coach Ed Davis and his Delaware State women's basketball team. The Hornets, who went more than nine minutes without scoring in the first half against Morgan State on Saturday, clawed their way back to within three points with 2:08 left.
That was as close as Delaware State would get as critical turnovers burned the Hornets down the stretch in a 51-44 loss to the Bears in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game. Davis, whose team suffered its third consecutive loss to fall to 5-12 overall, 1-4 in the MEAC, was left searching for answers.

Flint, Michigan -- One of the fastest-growing sports on both the high school and college level is bowling and one of the finest bowlers in the area will be taking her game to the next level when the college bowling season begins later this year.
Kearsley High School (Flint, Michigan) senior Danielle Hale signed a college scholarship June 8 to continue her career at Morgan State University in Baltimore. "This is a great thing for Danielle and for all girls bowling in the area," said Kearsley coach Rob Ploof. "Morgan State is getting a very good bowler from Kearsley and she will instantly make that team much better. I am extremely proud of Danielle for everything she has accomplished in bowling at Kearsley."
Hale helped Kearsley to one of its finest seasons ever this past winter. She averaged 186 for the Hornets this season and had a 78 percent spare percentage. "I am really, really excited about bowling in college," Hale said. "I'm ecstatic about the opportunity. I was thinking that I would not get the opportunity to bowl in college and I was so happy when I had the chance." She received an assist in her college recruitment from Flint Northern coach Mike Balentine, who was attending an NCAA bowling tournament in Tennessee when he talked to college coaches and let them know about Hale.

Quaker Valley's Rogers chooses Morgan State Bears
Photo: Christa Rogers is an Pennsylvania All-State volleyball player, an all-section basketball player, and track star. Rogers plans to major in electrical or mechanical engineering at MSU and selected the Bears over scholarships offers from Delaware State and UMES.
LEETSDALE, PA – As she looked toward college, Christa Rogers chose to create rather than wait. An NCAA Division I prospect in three sports, she could have waited for the telephone to bring college opportunities. She could have waited for the postman to deliver possibility, or for talent-starved recruiters to contact her high school coaches.
Instead, she sat down with her mother and, like a true setter, assisted possibility.
“I sat down with my mother and made a list of colleges that had what I’m looking for, and we sent them tapes.” Morgan State University quickly responded with a scholarship offer to play NCAA Division I volleyball, and Rogers, this week, accepted.

BALTIMORE -- Whitney Cunningham scored a career-high 21 points and Coppin State extended its winning streak to eight straight with a 71-58 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over Morgan State in both teams regular-season finale at Hill Field House.
