WASHINGTON, D.C. – After maintaining the lead for the entire game, the Howard softball team lost grip of the win as they allowed three runs in the final inning, giving Delaware State the 3-4 victory on Thursday afternoon. The game was rescheduled after a threat of bad weather on April 4 and followed a doubleheader split where both teams recorded a win.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third where the Lady Bison (10-20, 1-2 MEAC) posted a 2-0 lead following hits by Trina Kindred, Christine Sborz and Lorae Robinson and two DSU errors. Delaware State (19-10, 2-1 MEAC) responded with a run in the fourth as Casey Beighley launched a solo homerun.
Rebecca Kirshner immediately rallied back and homered in the bottom of the fifth inning bringing HU up, 3-1. The homerun marked her second of the season, tying her with Emily Johnson for most homers on the team this season.
Two Bison errors in the seventh coupled with four hits by the Lady Hornets caused a three-run rally that allowed Delaware State to steal the game. Howard was shutout at the plate in their final turn at bat, giving Delaware State the 2-1 advantage in the series.
Johnson pitched the majority of the game, but traded spots with Samantha Gatson with two outs in the seventh. Gatson was able to land a strikeout to end the inning, but it came after a Delaware State RBI double. Prior to being relieved, Johnson recorded two strikeouts, three walks and allowed five hits.
Kirshner, Kindred and Robison led the Lady Bison with two hits each. The trio currently leads the team at the plate, averaging .352, .341, and .317, respectively.
The Lady Bison softball team will look to bounce back from their loss as they travel to meet Coppin State on April 9. Visit www.howard-bison.com for more information on Howard softball.

Delaware State Reinstates Women's Equestrian Team in Legal Battle
The equestrian team was the brainchild of former DSU president Alan Sessoms as a means to engage the equine industry and horse culture of Delaware. He saw the team as an “opportunity to recruit different kinds of students,” and to help bring balance to the men-women athletic divide. Sessoms is currently the president of the University of District of Columbia, Washington, D.C.
Facing scrutiny over possible Title IX violations, Delaware State University has agreed to reinstate their women’s equestrian program through 2010-11 after announcing its elimination earlier this year for budgetary reasons. The move resolves part of a legal battle between the historically Black institution and student athletes who filed suit to have the program continued after the current year, officials said.
In February, the Lady Hornet equestrians filed for a preliminary injunction order to preserve the team and ensure its presence at the school. On Wednesday, DSU lawyers filed a motion in federal district court consenting to a court order that allows the team to compete through the 2010-11 year. DSU officials will fund the team and all awarded scholarships will be honored, according to the agreement.
The Delaware district court ordered that DSU fulfill the team funding and scholarship obligations under the presumption that if budget cuts were to occur the equestrian team would not suffer more than other athletic teams on campus.

UMES and DSU makes NCAA 2009 National Collegiate Bowling Championship Field
A Historic First: Two MEAC teams in NCAA Women Championship Bowling Field of Eight
INDIANAPOLIS - The eight-team field competing for the 2009 National Collegiate Women's Bowling Championship was announced today by the NCAA Women's Bowling Committee. The field includes the following teams, all selected at large:
Arkansas State University
University of Central Missouri
Delaware State University
Fairleigh Dickinson University
University of Maryland, Eastern Shore
University of Nebraska, Lincoln
New Jersey City University
Vanderbilt University
Competition begins with a qualifying round in which each team bowls four five-person regular team games and five four-game Baker matches. Total pinfall during the qualifying round determines each team's seed in bracket play. In the Baker format, each of the five team members, in order, bowls a complete frame until a complete (10-frame) game is bowled. The fifth Baker match serves as the position round. The pinfall from the position round serves as a tiebreaker, if necessary.
Based on the qualifying round, teams are placed in two four-team double-elimination brackets. Teams compete against each other in a best-of-seven games Baker match. Ties within a Baker game will be decided by another full Baker game. During bracket play, the higher seed receives starting lane preference for the first game of the match, the seventh game of the match and any tie-breaker game that must be played.
The Detroit Metro Sports Commission and the University of Detroit Mercy will host the championship, which will be held April 9-11 at Super Bowl Lanes in Canton, Michigan. Tickets can be purchased by calling 734/459-6070 prior to the championship.
The University of Maryland, Eastern Shore sport a 115-39 record, the second best in the country. The Lady Hawks defeated Arkansas State University, 4-2, to capture the 2008 NCAA National Collegiate Women's Bowling Championship at Thunder Alley in Omaha, Nebraska. The win marked Maryland-Eastern Shore's first women's bowling national championship and first NCAA national title in any sport in the institution's history. The victory also made Lady Hawks' head coach Sharon Brummell the first woman and first African-American to lead a team to the title since the NCAA established the championship in 2004.
This is DSU's first trip while UMES, Nebraska, Central Missouri and New Jersey City are all making their sixth trip. Delaware State is ranked 4th in the country and have earned a bid for the first time in the 10-year history of the team.
“This is such a thrill for the team and the university,” said Delaware State second-year head coach Kim Terrell-Kearney, who has led the Hornets to a 117-36 overall record this season. The Hornets are 25-18 this season versus the other tournament teams with wins over No. 1 Vanderbilt and No. 2 Nebraska.

Former pro has DSU rolling to the top
Delaware State's second year head bowing coach and touring professional Kim Terrell-Kearney is on the verge of building the Lady Hornets into a national bowling powerhouse. DSU is ranked No. 4 nationally ahead of defending NCAA champion Maryland-Eastern Shore, which slipped to No. 5 after placing first in the preseason poll.
DOVER, DE -- When one door slammed closed on Kim Terrell-Kearney, she quickly turned her attention to finding a new challenge. Terrell-Kearney, winner of 11 pro bowling tour titles, decided to try her hand at coaching. There she could instill in youngsters a passion for the game that she loves. The two-time U.S. Women's Open winner found out that she was pretty good at getting her lessons across and two years ago landed a job as the head coach of Delaware State University's women's bowling team. Ever since she arrived, the Hornets have soared to new heights.
Last season, she led the Hornets to a school-record 74 wins and a No. 11 ranking in the final National Tenpin Coaches Association regular-season poll. DSU also finished second in the 2008 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championship, the best finish in team history. This year, Delaware State is ranked fourth in the nation -- an all-time high for the program -- as the Hornets travel to Laurel, Md., for the Bowie State Tournament today and Sunday.
Terrell-Kearney admits that becoming a bowling coach in Delaware was not exactly on her radar about five years ago. "I've been coaching really since [the Ladies Professional Bowling] tour folded, which has been about six years now," Terrell-Kearney said. "It's definitely different, but I like it very much. "I wanted to coach in college and there's only five full-time coaching jobs in college right now in the country. They [DSU] used to be part-time but now they made it a full-time position and I applied and there we were."
Terrell-Kearney definitely boasts a strong résumé.

HAMPTON, Va. - Two games. Powerful second half sends DSU on way to easy victory

Defensive effort sinks Morgan State, improves MEAC outlook
DOVER -- Three coat removals in the first half by the Morgan State women's basketball coach were followed by none in the second. Typical tongue-lashings toward his players during the first half turned into simple, quiet reminders later on.
Chalk up Beasley's second-half demeanor to the challenge presented by Delaware State, which played one of its better halves this season to defeat the Bears 66-49 and gain an important edge heading into the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament, March 11-15 at the RBC Center in Raleigh, N.C
