WSSU's Hayes says he is eager for Legacy Weekend

Winston-Salem State has a long and deep basketball tradition, and Athletics Director Bill Hayes wants the younger generation to know about it. Hayes has planned a “homecoming-like event” on Jan. 21-22 to highlight that tradition and to bring it to life.

Past greats such as Earl “The Pearl” Monroe, Cleo Hill and Ted Blunt are expected to attend the school’s first Legacy Weekend — an event Hayes hopes to hold annually to showcase the accomplishments of WSSU’s basketball greats.

Rams Legacy class

• Ted Blunt (1962-65): Played on 1963 CIAA championship team; third-team NAIA All-America in 1964.

• Jack DeFares (1955-57): Known as the “Kangaroo Kid,” helped Rams to 1957 CIAA title; All-CIAA three times.

• George Foree (1959-62): Along with Cleo Hill, helped WSSU to CIAA titles in 1960 and ’61; NAIA third-team All-America.

• Cleo Hill (1958-61): Considered by many to be the best player in WSSU history; first-team NAIA All-America in 1961; first-round NBA Draft pick by the St. Louis Hawks in 1961.

• Earl Monroe (1964-67): All-time scoring leader in CIAA history (2,935 points); helped WSSU win the 1966-67 Division II national championship; NBA Hall of Famer; voted one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history.

• Chellia Nelson (1994-97): All-CIAA three times; ranks No. 3 in WSSU women’s basketball history with 1,434 points.

• Carolyn Huntley (1984-87): Only women’s player in school history to be All-CIAA four straight years; school’s career scoring leader (1,617 points).

“We want to hang those jerseys up here in the Gaines Center,” Hayes said. “As you see, we have that one tiny Earl Monroe jersey up there, and that’s it. It’s too small, so we feel like it’s important to let the young kids see the great ones that played here before.”

WSSU has 23 banners hanging in the Gaines Center, all marking team accomplishments such as CIAA titles, NAIA titles and the 1966-67 NCAA Division II national championship. The jerseys that will eventually...

DSU national title run gets ready for road bump -- Albany State

Delta State faces a tough obstacle of winning the Division II national championship. The 13th ranked Statesmen (9-3) travel to No. 9 Albany State (11-0) in a quarterfinal contest on Saturday at noon. Delta State is coming off its best game of the season, routing North Alabama 47-24 in the second round last week at Parker Field.

“That was the most complete game we put together this year,” Statesmen coach Ron Roberts said. “It was an outstanding performance across the board and a total team effort.” For Delta State to reach the semifinals, the Statesmen will likely need a repeat performance against the unbeaten Golden Rams. Albany State and the Statesmen are ranked one-two in the South Central II Region.

Scouting the Statesmen

ALBANY, GA — The scouting report is in. Delta State, which takes on Albany State on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II football playoffs, is coming to town, and the Statesmen (9-3) will be the second straight team that the Rams (11-0) face for the first-time ever. So what does head coach Mike White and ASU know about them? Not much, aside from watching film, except that they are 10-4 in the playoffs, won the Division II National Championship in 2000 and have an explosive offense.

But just as much as the Rams don’t know about Delta State, the Statesmen don’t know about Albany State. Which is why DSU head coach Ron Roberts and his team are preparing for the best.

No. 24 Saint Augustine's Falcons spoil JCSU Bulls' homecoming

Saturday was J.C. Smith's homecoming, but Walter Sanders' big day.

St. Augustine's tailback became the first Falcon to run for 1,000 yards since the program was revived in 2002 in a 34-24 CIAA South win against the Golden Bulls at McGirt Field. Sanders, Division II's third-leading rusher, ran for 208 yards and three touchdowns on 33 carries to help No. 24 St. Augustine's (7-1, 5-0) win its sixth straight and remain tied for first in the division with Raleigh crosstown rival Shaw.

"Our offensive linemen came out ready to play because it was Johnson C. Smith's homecoming and we wanted to set an example ...
