Former CFL Star Baggs Preparing for NFL

Warren Moon, Doug Flutie and Jeff Garcia dominated the CFL for years before becoming stars in the NFL. Joe Theisman, Raghib “Rocket” Ismail and Mike Sellers used the CFL to mature before having very successful NFL careers. Marv Levy cut his teeth as the head coach in Montreal before taking the Buffalo Bills to four straight Super Bowls.

Cardinals’ linebacker Stevie Baggs hopes to be the next CFL success story as he’ll look to make an impact for Arizona’s pass rush in 2010.

After three straight All-American seasons at Bethune-Cookman, Baggs, nicknamed “Shakespeare” in college, spent time on the practice squad for Detroit and Jacksonville.

Baggs then moved north and was a run-of-the-mill player for four seasons in Winnipeg, Edmonton and Saskatchewan until last season. The Ft. Lauderdale native broke out in 2009, tallying 55 tackles, 11 sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception. Those efforts earned Baggs Defensive Player of the Week honors on three different occasions.

Rodgers-Cromartie (TSU) hurt at practice

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Arizona Cardinals rookie cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, a four-year starter at Tennessee State University, was taken off the practice field on a cart after injuring his right ankle on Tuesday. Rodgers-Cromartie, the Cardinals' top draft pick, rolled his right ankle during drills halfway through practice and did not return to the field.

Arizona Coach Ken Whisenhunt spoke briefly after practice but provided little detail on Rodgers-Cromartie's condition. "We'll know more tomorrow," Whisenhunt said. "He tried to go but it's a little sore so we'll see tomorrow." The Cardinals drafted the speedy 6-foot-2, 182-pounder with the 16th overall pick.

Rodgers-Cromartie is expected to push for playing time in the defensive backfield this season and worked with the starting unit several times...

Tennessee State's Rodgers-Cromartie reports to Cardinals camp

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie made the 2 1/2-hour drive from Phoenix to Flagstaff with an Arizona Cardinals staffer on Saturday. Rodgers-Cromartie had a chance to take in some pretty scenery and think about an even longer journey - his transformation from a skinny, unrecruited cornerback at Tennessee State to a first-round NFL draft pick.

"It gave me a lot of time to just think about what I've got to do and the work I've got to put in and all the things that I overcame just to get here," said Rodgers-Cromartie, who signed a six-year contract on Friday.

Arizona Cardinals earn high praise for Rodgers-Cromartie selection at #16, 1st Round

No pick in the first round of Saturday's NFL draft drew a louder or more positive response from any of the talking heads on the NFL Network than the selection of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. When the Cardinals took the Tennessee State cornerback at No. 16, all you could hear on the television was someone shouting, "Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!"

It was Deion Sanders. "I love the intangibles! I love the upside!" Sanders, the former eight-time Pro Bowl cornerback, said. " . . . I want to work with this guy."

Say what you want about Sanders, be it his mouth, flamboyance or his fear and loathing to make tackles during his NFL career. But when a cornerback of the stature of Prime Time says he wants to personally work out with your rookie defensive back, it should tell you something.
