Panthers Fall 70-63 To Jackson State

Jackson State outscored Prairie View A&M 11-3 over the final 5:36 as the Panthers dropped 70-63 nationally televised heartbreaker on Monday evening in the William Nicks Building.

Playing before an ESPNU television audience and a spirited dome crowd that topped 3,800 spectators, Jackson State threatened to blow the game away early as they stormed out to a 10-3 lead five minutes in. Prairie View fought back via two huge treys from senior Trant Simpson to remain close but JSU continued to lead as they upped its margin to 27-17 after a Raymond Gregory basket at the 5:33 mark.

The roles began to reverse from that point as Prairie View A&M found its groove as junior Beloved Rogers scored five consecutive points to begin a huge half-ending spurt. JSU added a Rod Melvin free throw after the basket but PV went back to work offensively as they outscored JSU 6-2 to go into the half down 30-28.

PVAMU Staff Expected to be Finalized on Wednesday

Staff decisions to be made

Prairie View football coach Heishma Northern said he expects to have his staff completed by the conclusion of the American Football Coaches Association Convention, which began Sunday and ends Wednesday in Dallas.

Northern, who is attending the convention, still has to find an offensive coordinator, running backs coach and defensive coordinator, the position he held for the last six seasons before replacing former coach Henry Frazier III on Dec. 13.

He said he'll likely end up promoting one of the current defensive assistants to coordinator while retaining the responsibility for calling the defensive plays.

Heishma Northern Named Prairie View A&M University Head Football Coach

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - Prairie View A&M Director of Athletics Fred Washington announced that defensive coordinator Heishma Northern, who was named head coach in-waiting this past October, will become the 31st head coach in university history effective immediately. Northern will replace Henry Frazier III, who stepped down as head football coach this afternoon to pursue other opportunities.

“These are exciting times on the “Hill” and we were definitely not looking forward to separating from Coach Frazier,” said Washington. “He brought our football team to a point of stability on the field and in the classroom and you just can’t ask a coach for any more than that. He came to Prairie View and did what we asked him to do and we will always appreciate him. He is and will always be a Panther.”

Frazier leaves Prairie View as the second-most successful head coach in school history with a Prairie View A&M mark of 43-30 during his seven-year span. During his tenure, Frazier captured the school’s first Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship since 1964 in 2009 and has guided the Panthers to four consecutive winning seasons. Named the 2009 Eddie Robinson Award winner as the top coach on the Football Championship Subdivision level, Frazier leaves behind a program that has become a consistent contender in the SWAC and on the FCS ranks.

A 14-year veteran on the collegiate level, Northern has moved the Prairie View A&M defense to new heights during his six-year tenure as the team’s defensive coordinator. Under his watch, Prairie View’s defensive unit has produced several All-Americans in addition to ranking near the top of several statistical categories on the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). As a result of the unit’s success, Northern was named the 2008 Division I-AA Coordinator of the Year by FootballScoop.com and has participated in the NCAA Champions Forum and NCAA Expert Coaches Academy. He has also completed an NFL training camp internship with the Oakland Raiders.

“Northern is just one of those guys who you would never really know is in the room but he knows the game of football and has been a big part of our success,” added Washington. “He’s our guy now and we are excited about opening up the 2011 season giving him this opportunity.”

A native of Baton Rouge, Northern is a 1996 graduate of Southern University with a degree in mathematics. He began his coaching career at Glen Oaks (La.) High School before moving on to the collegiate level at Morehouse College under former NFL standout Doug Williams. After a stint at Morehouse, Northern moved on to Grambling State with Williams and spent seven seasons there as the team’s defensive coordinator, defensive backs coach, running backs coach and special teams coordinator. Northern has collected a total of five SWAC Championships with one coming as a player in 1993 and four as a coach (2000-2003, 2009).

“I’m happy for the opportunity to become head coach at Prairie View A&M University,” said Northern. “Being a head coach on the collegiate level was one of the goals I’ve set since entering the coaching profession and I plan to go above and beyond while carrying out my goal. I also want to thank Coach Frazier for allowing me to work alongside him for six years as he was more than just a head coach. He was very good administrator who taught me more than Xs and Os as he believed in letting his coaches do the jobs they were assigned to do.”

Northern, who also holds a master’s in Sports Administration from Grambling State, is the oldest of three siblings and is married to the former Paula Duell of Baton Rouge, La. Together, they have one son, Adam (3).

Prairie View coach Frazier steps down; defensive coach elevated

Coach Henry Frazier III is considering offers from Delaware State, North Carolina Central and Howard University in the MEAC. Sources from Washington D.C. have confirmed Frazier will accept the NCCU offer.

When Henry Frazier III arrived at Prairie View A&M in December 2003, he was tasked with turning around a program that lost an NCAA-record 80 games from 1989-98 and hadn’t had a winning season since 1976. Seven years, a conference championship and four consecutive winning seasons later, Frazier is ready for a new challenge and a chance to move closer to his hometown.

Frazier stepped down Monday after seven years at the Prairie View helm to pursue other coaching opportunities. Sixth-year defensive coordinator Heishma Northern, who was named the Panthers’ coach-in-waiting on Oct. 13, will succeed Frazier.

A person familiar with the situation said Frazier will accept the head coaching position at North Carolina Central...

Frazier Steps Down at Prairie View

HOUSTON, TX - Prairie View A&M athletics director Fred Washington told FOX 26 Sports Monday head football coach Henry Frazier has stepped down for personal reasons. Washington said Heishma Northern, the Panthers head coach-in-waiting, is Prairie View's new head football coach.

In 2009 Frazier led the Panthers to their first SWAC championship since 1964. Because of that success Frazier was named the SWAC Coach of the Year. Frazier also won national honors in 2009 when he was named the Eddie Robinson Award winner given to the coach-of-the-year in the Football Championship Subdivision.  Frazier was the first coach from the SWAC or a historically black college or university to win the Eddie Robinson Award which is given annually to the top coach in the FCS.

Frazier likely Eagles' next coach

DURHAM -- N.C. Central may have a new football coach.

The NCCU Board of Trustees will hold a specially called meeting by private teleconference on Thursday at 2 p.m. with one agenda item -- head football coach. NCCU athletic director Ingrid Wicker-McCree is listed by the agenda item and will make a presentation to the board.

The Houston Chronicle reported Tuesday morning that Prairie View A&M coach Henry Fraizer III resigned on Monday, and he likely would accept the head coaching position at NCCU. Frazier had three years remaining on his contract at Prairie View.

Wicker-McCree did not return a call for comment Tuesday.

Prairie View Panthers dash Alcorn Braves' SWAC title dreams

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas — Alcorn State was within 4 seconds of continuing to control its destiny for the SWAC East division championship. But two Prairie View touchdowns in the final seconds handed Alcorn a 35-27 defeat and ended any hopes the Braves had of reaching it’s first ever SWAC championship game.

K.J. Black threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Shaun Stephens with 4 seconds remaining to give the Panthers a 29-27 lead. Alcorn (5-5, 4-4 SWAC) then fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Prairie View ran it back for a touchdown on the final play of the game for the final scoring margin.

Prairie View rallies late for wild victory over Alcorn State

PRAIRIE VIEW — A perfect nightmare unfolded for Prairie View A&M in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s game against Southwestern Athletic Conference rival Alcorn State.

The Panthers had blown a 23-point, third-quarter lead after allowing the Braves to score 27 unanswered points and trailed by four with only 25 seconds remaining. They were left with possession at their 22-yard line and no timeouts, and all energy had seemingly been zapped from what remained of a bewildered crowd at Blackshear Stadium.

And then suddenly, a dream ending became reality for Prairie View.

PVAMU Panthers Roll Past Lincoln 45-12

K.J. Black passed for two touchdowns and Chris Adingupu recorded a 53-yard interception return as Prairie View A&M defeated Lincoln University 45-12 before an overflow homecoming crowd at Blackshear Field.

Prairie View’s Jarvis Wilson recorded the game’s first big play as he scooped up a fumble and raced 32 yards to Lincoln’s 8-yard line on their opening possession. Four plays later, Prairie View’s Brady Faggard connected on a 21-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead. Prairie View moved ahead 10-0 on its second offensive possession as Black connected with wideout Brandon Bell for a 42-yard strike and upped its lead to 17-0 several minutes later in the first quarter following Donald Babers’ 13-yard touchdown run.

LU trimmed its deficit to 17-12 midway through the second quarter following a 75-yard touchdown run from Joseph Snell and a 15-yard return off a blocked punt from Demarkis Smith. Prairie View added another touchdown run from Babers with 8:08 left in the second stanza to move ahead 24-12 and put the game away in the third quarter as they exploded for 21 points.

Shreveport Classic: Prairie View A&M Panthers vs. Southern Jaguars

Prairie View A&M University Department of Athletics has entered into a two-year agreement with the City of Shreveport and State Fair of Louisiana to bring to the city one football game each during the 2010 and 2011 seasons at Independence Stadium.

Prairie View's first contest in Shreveport will take place on October 23rd, 2010 versus Southern University and A&M College (Baton Rouge). The gridiron matchup will be a reunion of sorts as both teams met in Independence Stadium during the 2003 campaign.

Prairie View beats Mississippi Valley State 34-13

GREENVILLE, MS - Quarterback K.J. Black threw a pair of touchdown passes to Shaun Stephens in a 1:30 span of the third quarter Saturday to help Prairie View (2-3, 2-2 Southwestern Athletic Conference) subdue Mississippi Valley State in the Delta Devils' home away from home at Greenville High.

Adrian Martin pulled the Delta Devils (0-5, 0-4) within 14 points in the fourth quarter, catching TD passes of 19 and 52 yards from Oliver Hughes. Prairie View's Donald Babers rushed for 151 yards and two TDs on 26 carries. Black completed 22 of 37 passes for 230 yards.

TD connection hooks up twice in 90-second span

GREENVILLE, Miss. — Shaun Stephens caught two touchdown passes from K.J. Black in a 1-minute, 30-second span of the third quarter to lift Prairie View A&M over Mississippi Valley State 34-13 on Saturday.

Stephens’ first touchdown — a 25-yarder — gave the Panthers (2-3, 2-2 Southwestern Athletic Conference) a 17-0 lead. Two plays later, Jarvis Wilson recovered a fumble at the Delta Devils’ 15, and Black then found Stephens for a 15-yard score.

2010 State Fair Classic - PVAMU vs. GSU

Prairie View hurt by fumble in 34-17 loss to Grambling State

DALLAS, TX — Penalties and a costly fumble doomed Prairie View A&M in a 34-17 loss to Grambling State in the State Fair Classic at the Cotton Bowl. The Panthers, (1-3, 1-2 SWAC) were penalized seven times for 62 yards and fumbled inside the Tigers’ 5-yard line in the second half.

After a 17-yard pass from KJ Black to Shaun Stephens on the opening drive of the second half gave
the Panthers a 17-14 lead, Prairie View was poised to score again on its next possession.
After Black hit Devin Brown for a 21-yard gain to the Grambling 3-yard line, Brown fumbled, killing the drive and any Prairie View momentum.

“It killed us,” Panthers head coach Henry Frazier III said. “We had the lead. We should have scored again. That was very devastating. That gave them the momentum.”

State Fair Classic: Big plays help Grambling State top Prairie View A&M

Grambling State used big plays in the second half to defeat Prairie View A&M, 34-17, at the State Fair Classic on Saturday at the Cotton Bowl. The Tigers avenged their loss from last year, their first in the series since 1986.

A 59-yard bomb from Anthony Carrothers to Kiare Thompson with 4:21 left put Grambling State up by 10 and sealed the Panthers' fate. Grambling State's Cornelius Walker scored on a 66-yard run with 1:24 remaining for the final score.

The Panthers' defense gave them a chance by stuffing Frank Warren on a fourth-and-1 at Prairie View's 14 with six minutes left and Prairie View down by a field goal. But Prairie View's drive consisted of an incompletion, a sack, a false start and a near-interception. Carrothers hooked up with Thompson on the following drive.

State Fair Classic is SWAC predictor

The official SWAC Championship is played in Birmingham in December. But the State Fair Classic at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas might be the conference's true championship game.

The winner of the annual matchup between Grambling State and Prairie View A&M has gone on to win the SWAC's Western Division — and eventually, the conference championship — in each of the past two seasons. The loser has had to play out the rest of its season, fruitlessly hoping the other team will slip up and provide a path to the championship game.

Do-or-die game faces Prairie View at Cotton Bowl

Prairie View A&M coach Henry Frazier III hardly knew what to say when addressing his team in a huddle after last weekend's 18-15 loss to Alabama State at Blackshear Stadium. The Panthers had just seen their nine-game home winning streak snapped. Their 15-game winning streak against Southwestern Athletic Conference opponents also went up in smoke. For Frazier, it was unfamiliar territory.

"It was hard to accept," Frazier said. "A part of me was like, 'Damn, we lost. What do I say?' I had to question myself (to see) if I was cut out to coach because I can't accept ...

Losing is no longer routine for resurgent Prairie View A&M‎

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – There was a time in the not-so-distant past when handling defeat was like rolling out of bed to the Prairie View A&M football team. It was routine, rote, all too regular. Holders of the NCAA record for consecutive losses at a mind-boggling 80 from 1989 to '98, the Panthers did not post a winning season from 1977 through 2006.

Yet there was nothing been-there, done-that about their latest loss. A last-minute 47-yard field goal by Alabama State resulted in an 18-15 defeat Saturday in front of a shocked crowd at Blackshear Stadium. Walking off the field with a 15-game Southwestern Athletic Conference winning streak in tatters, players sank into an abyss of remorse and pain.

"This is awful," said senior receiver Shaun Stephens. "We just don't do this." Not anymore, anyway.

Late Field Goal Dooms PV Panthers In 18-15 Loss To Alabama State

A 47-yard field goal by Andrew Lyons with 23 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter lifted Alabama State to an 18-15 road victory over Prairie View A&M on Saturday evening at Blackshear Field.

Leading 12-7 early in the fourth quarter and about to receive another offensive possession, the Panthers gave Alabama State new life after a muffed punt by Prairie View’s Brandon Bell led to an ASU fumble recovery at the PV 23. Four plays later, ASU moved ahead 15-12 on quarterback Devin Dominguez’s 7-yard pass to Nick Andrews at the 10-minute mark. Both teams traded possessions throughout the quarter with the Panther defense making a big stand by stopping the Hornets on 4th-and-1 with 4:29 remaining.

Prairie View took advantage of the stop and managed to tie the game at 15-all on Brady Faggard’s 42-yard field goal attempt with 1:55 left on the clock. Alabama State responded on its ensuing drive and drove 50 yards to set up Lyons’ game-winning field goal.

USM Golden Eagle '7s' play well against Prairie View

Forgive the Prairie View A&M Panthers for seeing double Saturday night against the University of Southern Mississippi. Not only did the visitors get knocked loopy by the Golden Eagles at Roberts Stadium, losing 34-7, but it was a pair of “Sevens” playing on either side of the football for USM that helped apply some of the most-telling, early shots.

Sophomore running back Desmond Johnson, No. 7 on offense, carried seven times for 32 yards in the first half and scored the Golden Eagles’ first two rushing touchdowns of the season, getting USM off to a 17-0 lead before an announced 27,316. Red-shirt freshman cornerback Deron Wilson, No. 7 on defense, made a splash in his second consecutive start, with four tackles, including a jarring, helmet-popping hit on Panther running back Donald Babers for a 4-yard loss, and broke up two passes.

FCS teams optimistic about early upsets

Prairie View, TSU see chance to prove ability

Jacksonville State inspired Football Championship Subdivision programs across the country when it stunned Mississippi in a 49-48 double-overtime victory last Saturday at Oxford, Miss. Later that evening, North Dakota State outlasted Kansas 6-3 in Lawrence, Kan., to gain another upset for the FCS.

Today, Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M will have their shot at shocking the Football Bowl Subdivision establishment. TSU will face Connecticut at 11 a.m. in East Hartford, Conn.; Prairie View will take on Southern Mississippi at 6 p.m. in Hattiesburg, Miss.

First USM home game today

The Southern Miss football team holds its home opener at 6 p.m. today against Prairie View A&M, trying to bury last week’s disappointing 41-13 loss at South Carolina. USM has never lost to an opponent from the SWAC, but the Panthers are the best team that the league offers after a 9-1 season in 2009 and a season-opening 16-14 win over Texas Southern.

Southern Miss players admit that Ole Miss’ loss to another FCS team, Jacksonville State, last week has been a refresher on what can happen when you don’t play your best against a lesser opponent. The Golden Eagles went 6-0 at home last season, and have an eight-game home winning streak going.

UCONN FOOTBALL: Huskies eager for home opener

STORRS, CT — Following up last weekend’s season-opener at Michigan to Saturday’s game with Texas Southern is a little like going from playing Carnegie Hall to the local fair in consecutive weeks for the UConn football team. Then again, beggars can’t be choosers. The Huskies are fairly lucky to have landed anyone at all for today’s home-opener at Rentschler Field (noon, SNY).

Northeastern, an old Yankee Conference rival from UConn’s Division I-AA football days, was the original opponent. But when it abruptly ended its football program last December it left UConn coach Randy Edsall scrambling to fill the open date.

Who will play QB for Prairie View?

HATTIESBURG, MS — With Prairie View A&M star quarterback K.J. Black questionable for Saturday night's game against Southern Miss, the Golden Eagles have made sure to cover all their bases on defense.

If Black doesn't go at Roberts Stadium, Jonathan Troast will step in after leading the Panthers to a 16-14 win over Texas Southern in a defensive struggle on Sunday.

Prairie View coach Henry Frazier said that Black could return against USM but will more likely be held out until next week against Alabama State.

New UNCW coach humbled to be joining basketball hall of fame

On Friday, former Prairie View A&M University coach and alumna Cynthia Cooper-Dyke will become the first former WNBA player to be inducted into Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

"I don't think it has completely sunk in yet. I still think I'm wavering on the edge and I don't really feel like a hall of famer, but I think when I get to Springfield (Mass.) and I start to do the different events I will start to feel like an inductee of the class of 2010," the first-year UNC-Wilmington women's basketball coach said earlier this week.

"It's an amazing feeling to know that you are being honored and rewarded for all of the sacrifices that you have made throughout the years."

Cooper-Dyke grew up as one of eight children being raised by a single mother. It's here where Cooper learned her best trait, hard work. "My mom was just a special woman," Cooper-Dyke said. "She raised eight kids by herself in the (Los Angeles) inner city of Watts. She worked her way from welfare to having a job and taking care of the eight kids by herself and she did a terrific job."

With that life, basketball wasn't something Cooper-Dyke grew up with. She didn't start playing competitively until she was a teenager, yet led her Locke High School team to its first state title as a senior. That was Cooper-Dyke's first taste of a championship, but it certainly wouldn't be her last.

FCS Season Preview: SWAC

Birmingham, AL - Quinton Spears could serve as the poster child for Prairie View A&M football. The redshirt senior has gone from being a walk-on at wide receiver in 2006 to an All-Southwestern Athletic Conference first-team selection at defensive end in 2009. "It's really like the Prairie View story," Spears says. "You know, we started out at the bottom, and then we started gradually rising and rising."

Prairie View was at the bottom of the entire FCS when it lost an almost unfathomable 80 straight games from 1989-98. The Panthers have risen under seventh-year head coach Henry Frazier III and are coming off their second straight 9-1 season and their first SWAC championship since 1964. With the return of a veteran team, they are a clear favorite to repeat as conference champions.

"We talked about that as a team, we talked about how this is new territory for all of us," senior quarterback K.J. Black said. "There's not a lot of people on the team that (previously) have been champions.
