Prairie View men end season with loss to Jackson State

GARLAND – Prairie View A&M had a comeback in its sights after pulling within three points of Jackson State with nine minutes left in Wednesday’s Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament first-round matchup. And then suddenly, the Panthers went ice cold.

The seventh-seeded Prairie View men made just one field goal over the final 9:08 against No. 2 seed Jackson State, ending their season with a 50-38 loss at the Special Events Center.

The Panthers (10-22) shot only 31 percent and hit only two of 13 3-pointers. Prairie View fell behind 30-21 at the start of the second half, but quickly closed the gap, pulling within 38-35 on a layup by Duwan Kornegay at the 9:08 mark.

JSU lets 15-point lead slip away, takes hit in SWAC standings

The shot bounded off the side rim. Grant Maxey's head dipped. And Jackson State missed a monumental opportunity. Texas Southern overcame a 15-point second-half deficit to stun JSU 70-67 on Saturday night, clawing back into the game in the final moments to take control of the conference lead.

"To say the least, it was very disappointing," JSU coach Tevester Anderson said. "This game will hurt for a while because it was a big game."  Huge.

It was a battle between the conference's No. 1 and No. 2 teams, a clash involving the third- and fourth-ranked squads in Division I black college basketball - both scrapping for a leg up in the league in front of an announced 2,002 crowd at the Athletics and Assembly Center.

Alcorn beats rival Jackson State 81-75

ASU Braves Coach Larry Smith
LORMAN, MS — Alcorn State took the lead with 1:25 left in the second half over SWAC rival Jackson State with a three-pointer by Marquiz Baker. The late shot put Alcorn up 73-71 and they were able to close out the visiting Tigers with an 81-75 victory.

“Jackson State is a good team, they’re solid. Our defense did a great job, we shut them down in terms of percentage,” head coach Larry Smith said. “Our kids played hard for 40 minutes and we stepped up down the stretch.”

Early in the game, the Braves led by as many as 10 as the offense took advantage of many put backs and fast breaks points. Meanwhile, the defense contested every shot well, not allowing the Tigers to have any open looks at the basket.

JSU Turnovers lead to Alcorn State Lady Braves 66-54 win

The Lady Braves of Alcorn State defeated conference rival Jackson State 66-54. Alcorn, now 7-12 (6-4), outscored the Lady Tigers despite shooting a lower field goal percentage. However, the Lady Braves were more efficient from with three-pointers and from the free throw line.

Baker, Braves ambush Tigers

Not this time, Marquiz Baker told Jackson State. Not this time. Baker, Alcorn State's fiery shooting guard, scored 23 points - seven of those coming inside 2 minutes - and the Braves beat Jackson State 81-75 on Saturday night, upsetting the conference-leading Tigers and breaking a seven-game losing streak to their bitter rivals.

Said Baker: "I was determined not to let Jackson State beat us at home this time."

The conference's ninth- place team entering the day, Alcorn State (3-17, 3-8 Southwestern Athletic Conference) rarely trailed and knocked off the the Tigers (12-10, 8-2) three weeks after losing to them by 26 points in Jackson.

Tigers (JSU) slow down Devils (MVSU)

Jackson State Head Coach Tevester Anderson
With its largest crowd of the season (6,809) on hand and about 20 football recruits watching from courtside seats, Jackson State turned this Southwestern Athletic Conference showdown into nothing but a snoozer. Said JSU's Tyrone Hanson: "We were really souped up for this game."

Hanson and the Tigers beat Mississippi Valley State 83-73 Saturday night, remaining atop the conference standings and sending the league's most surprisingly successful squad home with its first loss since Jan. 10.

In this battle between the SWAC's top two teams, Jackson State (11-9, 7-1 SWAC) quieted a high-scoring Valley team that...

Woods, Mississippi Valley Devils beat SWAC drum after singing gym blues

Coach Sean Woods makes sure you get it correct. The Mississippi Valley State basketball team didn't have the luxury of practicing in a high school gym. "Middle school," he said. "A middle school gym."

Heading into tonight's Southwestern Athletic Conference showdown with Jackson State, the Delta Devils have come quite a ways. Their basketball arena floor is no longer a bubbling, waterlogged mess. They no longer practice in that middle school gym. They don't play "home" games at county civic centers any more. And, they aren't thought of as a middle-of-the-pack team.

Picked to finish seventh in the 10-team conference before the season, Valley (7-13) is 6-1 in the league, tied atop the standings with Jackson State (10-9) and Texas Southern (8-10).

Panthers Fall 70-63 To Jackson State

Jackson State outscored Prairie View A&M 11-3 over the final 5:36 as the Panthers dropped 70-63 nationally televised heartbreaker on Monday evening in the William Nicks Building.

Playing before an ESPNU television audience and a spirited dome crowd that topped 3,800 spectators, Jackson State threatened to blow the game away early as they stormed out to a 10-3 lead five minutes in. Prairie View fought back via two huge treys from senior Trant Simpson to remain close but JSU continued to lead as they upped its margin to 27-17 after a Raymond Gregory basket at the 5:33 mark.

The roles began to reverse from that point as Prairie View A&M found its groove as junior Beloved Rogers scored five consecutive points to begin a huge half-ending spurt. JSU added a Rod Melvin free throw after the basket but PV went back to work offensively as they outscored JSU 6-2 to go into the half down 30-28.

Johnson-Danner leads TSU men past Jackson State

A balanced group of scorers has been the key to Texas Southern’s strong start in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

That group came up big again in Saturday’s ESPN2-televised showdown against Jackson State.

TSU got double-digit scoring from four players and clamped down on defense in the final two minutes to escape with a 66-62 victory before a crowd of 1,132 at the H&PE Arena. TSU (6-9, 4-0) won its fourth straight game and moved into sole possession of first place in the SWAC.

TSU Tigers Stay Perfect at 4-0

The Texas Southern Tigers stay perfect in conference play after beating their toughest SWAC opponent so far this season before a national TV audience on ESPN2. TSU defeated Jackson State 66-62 to become the only unbeaten team in the conference.

The Tigers took the lead from the tip off and played strong for the first six minutes of the game. TSU held a 13-2 advantage with 14:42 on the clock. Jackson State put together a 10-0 run to get within one point of Texas Southern’s lead (13-12). TSU got back into their rhythm and worked their way to a 12 point lead with 56 seconds left in the first half. The TSU Tigers ended the period up 31-21.

TSU gave up some ground in the second half but kept an 8 point advantage with 9 minutes on the clock. Jackson State made another run and TSU fought back to stay up 57-49. J-State came back again and tied the game 58-58 with just over 3 minutes left to play. TSU fell behind briefly but regain the lead on a layup and follow-up free-throw by Daniel King at the 1:28 minute mark (63-61). The TSU Tigers never trailed again and picked up a 4 point win.

Maxey, JSU Tigers put clamps on Southern Jaguars

Two days after scoring its most points in a conference game in eight years, Jackson State delivered another impressive performance - this time, on the defensive end.

Grant Maxey had his first double-double in nearly two years - re-emerging for the Tigers at the right time - and Jackson State whipped Southern 73-49 Monday night, pushing its Southwestern Athletic Conference regular season win streak to 17 games and showing the home crowd it can also play some defense.

"I think our defense is getting better," JSU coach Tevester Anderson said. "We played awesome defense the first 20 minutes."

Southern women edge Jackson State

JACKSON, Miss. — Hannah Kador and the Southern women’s basketball team had both been in an ugly shooting slump. Monday night at Jackson State, they both warmed up when they absolutely needed to.

The Jaguars set a season high by shooting 50 percent from the floor, and Kador was 3-for-6 in the second-half — including the game-winning shot, a short jumper that gave Southern a 63-61 victory Monday night over Jackson State.

It was a happy ending to an otherwise rough game for the Jaguars (6-8, 3-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference). Tiffany Foster and Ashley Augerson, both seniors, weren’t available for the final horn. Foster fouled out, and Augerson suffered a broken nose during the first half.

JSU Tigers blast winless Braves, extend SWAC run

JSU Coach Tevester Anderson
It was the week before Christmas when Tyrone Hanson knew his 3-point shot had to change. His flick of the wrist needed an adjustment. His stroke of the arm warranted a modification. Said Hanson: "I just figured out my shot."

Boy, did he. Hanson made six of eight 3-pointers and Jackson State pounded Alcorn State 90-64 Saturday evening, winning a seventh straight game over the rival Braves and scoring its most points in a regulation Southwestern Athletic Conference game in eight years.

The win gave the Tigers (7-8, 3-0 SWAC) a third straight victory. And JSU has now scored at least 80 points against Alcorn (0-13, 0-3) in seven of the last eight meetings with the Braves.

Jackson State hands FIU men third loss in a row

Jenniro Bush scored 23 points to help lead Jackson State to a 61-52 victory over visiting FIU on Saturday night. Jackson State (2-6), playing at home for the first time this season, struggled to take advantage of its surroundings and fell behind 22-12 with 3:57 left in the first half. But three consecutive three-pointers from Bush and a layup by Chris Hyche cut FIU's lead to 24-23 at halftime.

Jackson State surged in the second half, shooting 12 for 21 (57.1 percent) from the field to take a 59-46 lead with 50 seconds remaining. FIU has lost three in a row after starting the season 4-1.

No place like home: Bush, Tigers rally past Panthers

Jackson, Ms. - Starting the season with seven straight road gameEdit HTMLs looked like it was affecting Jackson State early in Saturday's home game against Florida International. Coach Tevester Anderson said he felt like he was coaching in a strange gym. Junior forward Jenirro Bush, a transfer from Arkansas-Fort Smith, was playing in a strange gym.

It didn't take long for either of them to overcome all that, however. Bush scored 23 points to lead the Tigers to a 61-52 victory over Isiah Thomas-coached Florida International in JSU's first home game of the season and Bush's first game as a Tiger at the Williams Athletic and Assembly Center.

UTC blows early lead as Jackson State scores first win

JSU Head Coach Tevester Anderson
Jeff Smith didn’t bother putting on his goggles for the final minute. They just hung around his neck as Jackson State guard Rod Melvin dribbled out the clock in JSU’s 87-75 win over the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

The Tigers earned their first win of the season by turning a two-point game with 10 minutes to play into a comfortable victory for the SWAC preseason favorites. Jenniro Bush led all players with 31 points on 10-of-16 shooting including 5-of-8 from the 3-point line. Rod Melvin added 13, Grant Maxey contributed 12 points for JSU.

Jefferson Ties Career High as Mocs Lose to Jackson State

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's basketball team heads into Thanksgiving on a sour note losing 87-75 to Jackson State Wednesday night. Chattanooga is now 2-4 on the season, while the Tigers improve to 1-5.

DeAntre Jefferson (Bloomington, Ill.) and Ricky Taylor (Brownsville, Tenn.) tied for team-high scoring honors with 18 apiece. Jefferson's came on a perfect shooting night hitting 8-8 from the field and 2-2 from the free throw line. JSU's Jenirro Bush led all scorers with 31 points, while grabbing six rebounds. Three other Tigers joined him in double-digits including Rod Melvin who tallied 13 points and eight assists.

The Mocs led by 10 points twice in the first half. A three-point play by Jefferson on a tip-in made it 21-11 at 11:29. Leading 26-17 at 6:21, Chattanooga's offense went cold as the Tigers closed the half on a 19-5 run to take a 36-31 advantage into intermission. Jackson State built its lead to nine, 51-42 on a Grant Maxey three-point play at 14:58. But the Mocs stormed back.

Jackson St: 2010-11 Basketball Preview

JSU Coach Tevester Anderson

Conference Rank: #1 Southwestern Athletic Conference

2009-10: 19-13, 17-1
2009-10 postseason: NIT
Coach: Tevester Anderson (114-113 at Jackson State, 217-165 overall)

Jackson State dominated the Southwestern Athletic Conference in 2009-2010 with a 17-1 record. Yet the team failed to show up when it mattered the most, and fell in the first round of the conference tournament. That left the Tigers in the NIT instead of the NCAA Tournament. But all of that work was done mostly without preseason conference player of the year Grant Maxey who played in just two games before suffering a season ending ankle injury. The young team has grown up and should be able to cruise through the SWAC yet again.

Key Losses: G Garrison Johnson

Key Newcomers:
Kelsey Howard will probably end up being the star of this recruiting class. The 6-4 guard is a pure scorer and has enough size to attack the basket when he is not knocking down an outside shot. In a conference like the SWAC most pure scorers are strictly shooters, but because of Howard’s size he has the ability to be a multi-dimensional scorer and that will make him a good player sooner or later. Fellow freshman guard Scottie Sterling will not do nearly as much scoring, but he is a solid defender and ball handler. Derrell Taylor, a 6-7, 175 pound forward, needs to bulk up a bit, but he will eventually provide some depth to the frontcourt. Wing Jeniro Bush and 7-2 center Jamarious Sykes sat out last season and will look for minutes this time around.

JSU Tigers' Williams to be punished, Anderson vows

The day after one of his players was ejected from Tuesday's game for punching a Mississippi State player in the groin, Jackson State basketball coach Tevester Anderson called the action "uncharacteristic" and said Phillip Williams will be punished in some fashion. "It's uncharacteristic of him, it's uncharacteristic of our team and I'm really disappointed in what took place," said Anderson, whose team lost 81-67 to MSU in a first-round game of the National Invitation Tournament at Starkville. "There will be some repercussions from me down the road. ... Nothing should happen to cause a guy to do something like that.

"I will get to the bottom of it. I don't run that kind of program. I don't condone that at all." SWAC policy mandates a one-game suspension for a player ejected from a game. Although Williams became an instant YouTube hit and was fodder for radio and TV talk show hosts around the country, Anderson said he had not seen a replay of the punch by Wednesday afternoon. He said he will make Williams' punishment public after making a decision.

JSU Title-winning coach is 73 - going on 40

Tevester Anderson, Jackson State's basketball coach, won't tell anybody how old he is. People constantly ask; he won't say. "We know he's on up there, even if he doesn't act like it," 20-year-old sophomore point guard Rod Melvin says. "Tell you the truth, I'm scared to ask him," says Jackson State athletic director Robert Braddy. "I'd just rather keep it to myself," Anderson says, chuckling. "Nobody else really needs to know." And this was after his JSU Tigers defeated his alma mater, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 52-46 on Monday night to claim JSU's first outright SWAC regular-season championship since 1993.

Perhaps nobody needs to know, but investigative reporting - that's Google in this case - tells us Tevester Anderson is 73. Monday night, he looked 73 going on 40, especially when he climbed the ladder to snip the last strand of a souvenir net. He took his hands off the ladder, grinned a championship grin, waved the net over his head, and then hung it around his neck. Anderson won two Ohio Valley Conference regular season championships when he was the head man at Murray (Ky.) State. "This one feels better,"Anderson said. "This one feels better because this is home. This is what I came back to Jackson to do."
