TIPOFF
• Florida takes on Jackson State in both teams’ season opener. The Gators are 15-0 in the season tipoff under head coach Billy Donovan.
• Overall, UF has started 20 straight seasons with a win, the last loss in an opener coming vs. USF on Nov. 24, 1990.
• Florida and Jackson State have met once previously, with the Gators notching a 112-69 win in the first round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament. UF is 4-0 all-time against SWAC teams.



LAST TIME OUT
• Florida won its lone exhibition game, 114-57, against Division III Catholic University (Washington, D.C.).
Six Gators scored in double figures, led by Kenny Boynton’s 21 and Bradley Beal’s 20. Boynton also added 10 assists to claim a double-double.
• UF shot 20-for-40 from three-point range in the game, putting up what would have been school-record numbers for threes made and attempted had it not been an exhibition.
• Catholic University was led in scoring by sophomore guard Billy Donovan, the oldest son of UF head coach Billy Donovan, with 13 points.

JSU Tigers' Williams to be punished, Anderson vows

The day after one of his players was ejected from Tuesday's game for punching a Mississippi State player in the groin, Jackson State basketball coach Tevester Anderson called the action "uncharacteristic" and said Phillip Williams will be punished in some fashion. "It's uncharacteristic of him, it's uncharacteristic of our team and I'm really disappointed in what took place," said Anderson, whose team lost 81-67 to MSU in a first-round game of the National Invitation Tournament at Starkville. "There will be some repercussions from me down the road. ... Nothing should happen to cause a guy to do something like that.

"I will get to the bottom of it. I don't run that kind of program. I don't condone that at all." SWAC policy mandates a one-game suspension for a player ejected from a game. Although Williams became an instant YouTube hit and was fodder for radio and TV talk show hosts around the country, Anderson said he had not seen a replay of the punch by Wednesday afternoon. He said he will make Williams' punishment public after making a decision.

JSU Title-winning coach is 73 - going on 40

Tevester Anderson, Jackson State's basketball coach, won't tell anybody how old he is. People constantly ask; he won't say. "We know he's on up there, even if he doesn't act like it," 20-year-old sophomore point guard Rod Melvin says. "Tell you the truth, I'm scared to ask him," says Jackson State athletic director Robert Braddy. "I'd just rather keep it to myself," Anderson says, chuckling. "Nobody else really needs to know." And this was after his JSU Tigers defeated his alma mater, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 52-46 on Monday night to claim JSU's first outright SWAC regular-season championship since 1993.

Perhaps nobody needs to know, but investigative reporting - that's Google in this case - tells us Tevester Anderson is 73. Monday night, he looked 73 going on 40, especially when he climbed the ladder to snip the last strand of a souvenir net. He took his hands off the ladder, grinned a championship grin, waved the net over his head, and then hung it around his neck. Anderson won two Ohio Valley Conference regular season championships when he was the head man at Murray (Ky.) State. "This one feels better,"Anderson said. "This one feels better because this is home. This is what I came back to Jackson to do."

JSU Tigers Work Overtime to Claim 9th Straight Win

When teams scout Jackson State to ID the shooters and scorers, Rod Melvin and Cason Burk aren't likely to be in the conversation. The two entered Saturday's game against Grambling State averaging less than 10 points combined. Burk is the rebounding, hustle man. Melvin is a true pass-first point guard. Nobody at Hobdy Arena was ready, then, for the duo to come out firing, but they did, and for SWAC-leading JSU that was a good thing.With Burk scoring a career-high 19 and Melvin adding nine, the visiting Tigers held on for an 84-79 overtime victory, extending their winning streak to nine games.

"Teams are keying in on me. They think they know how to stop us," said Garrison Johnson, JSU's leading scorer with 22. "They fail to realize we have an arsenal. ... They held it down. "They bring it every night, but usually it's in a different aspect." JSU (15-11, 13-1) looked like it would glide to victory after opening with a 15-5 run and extending the lead to 14. Grambling (6-16, 4-10) cut it to six at halftime, but JSU jumped the lead to 13 early in the second half.

They couldn't stay on fire forever. The Jackson State Tigers had blown out their last three opponents by shooting them out of the gym early with gaudy percentages. The shots weren't falling Monday, but JSU is quick to remind you the team is built for defense and rebounding first. Oh, and there was the we're-part-of-this-team-too performance out of the trio of Jackson State centers.

JSU made it six straight victories with a 63-53 win over Southern in front of an announced 1,451 at the Athletics and Assembly Center. The first-place Tigers (12-11, 10-1) moved above .500 for the first time and hold a 2 1/2-game cushion going into the most crucial road trip of the SWAC season - Prairie View (12-9, 7-3) and Texas Southern (11-11, 7-3). "We always know we've got to be prepared to play, got to contribute," JSU center Gertavian Blake said. "We basically have to step up."

2009 College Hoops Preview: Jackson State University

Last season, Jackson State came within one point of going to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year. The Tigers lost to Mississippi Valley State, 59-58, in the SWAC Tournament final. JSU has reloaded for another run at the NCAA. The Tigers have four starters back including preseason SWAC Player of the Year, Grant Maxey. And JSU has a bench full of talented reserves. “We do have depth, and it’s a pretty talented team,” Tigers coach Tevester Anderson told USA Today before the season began. “We’ve got some good young kids, too.”

Maxey, a 6-foot-6-inch junior forward, has averaged 15.0 points and 7.4 rebounds per game this season. And this has come against some big-name competition that includes defending national champion Kansas, LSU, Arizona State, Illinois, Providence and Texas A&M. “He’s one of the best I’ve ever coached,” Anderson told Blue Ribbon Yearbook. “I expect Grant to get a lot of recognition this year. I expect him to get stronger this season, and with the right opportunity and right timing he could make some money (playing pro ball) one day.”

Other top players for the Tigers include Darrion Griffin (13 ppg) and Murrah High alum Jeremy Caldwell (10.5 ppg).

JSU OUTLOOK
Excellent. The Tigers are 1-10, but that will mean nothing when SWAC play begins. Every SWAC team has a losing record right now. And JSU has been playing its usual band of heavyweights in November and December. Hey, the program needs the money.

“You never know who (in the SWAC) is going to have a knockout punch or hit a home run,” Anderson told USA Today. “But we always feel like we will be in the top three.”
The Tigers should cruise through SWAC play and—barring a major upset in the SWAC tourney like last year’s—go back to the NCAA Tournament.

JSU Lady Tigers escape Texas Southern with 51-48 win

HOUSTON, Tex. - After taking a nine point lead into halftime the Jackson State women's basketball team had to fight tooth and nail to hang on and beat Texas Southern 51-48 in Southwestern Athletic Conference action Monday night.

With the win JSU improves to a 13-10 overall record and an 11-2 SWAC mark. Texas Southern falls to 7-15, 5-7.

Two Lady Tigers scored in double figures, with Erica Trahan leading the way with 17 points on 6-9 shooting. Carena Easley followed with a double-double. She finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Camile Parks led Texas Southern with 11 points and eight rebounds.

JSU held a 23-14 halftime lead. In the first half, neither team lit up the scoreboard. Jackson State shot 25 percent from the field and Texas Southern shot 17 percent.

In the second half Texas Southern outscored JSU 34-28. The Lady Tigers out rebounded TSU 49-46.

Jackson State will return to action Feb. 23 when the Lady Tigers travel to Grambling, LA to face Grambling State in SWAC action. Tip-off is set for 5:30 pm.

MVSU Delta Devils roast Jackson State Tigers

ITTA BENA, Miss. - Despite a game-high 15 points from Darrion Griffin the Jackson State men's basketball team fell 81-53 to the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils in SWAC action Saturday night before standing room only crowd of 4,798. From the tip-off, the game appeared to be paced for another classic SWAC battle with the lead going back and forth. JSU held a 31-30 lead with just over three minutes in the first half. Valley then went on a 7-0 run to take a 38-31 lead into halftime. Valley took control in the second half, outscoring the Tigers 43-22.

The Delta Devils (7-12, 5-3 SWAC) will return to action Monday when they host Grambling State at 6 p.m. live on ESPNU.

JSU Tigers look to build on last season's NCAA appearance

Jackson State kicks off its 2007-08 basketball campaign with a 7 p.m. practice Friday evening. The Tigers are coming off their first NCAA Tournament appearance in seven years - a 112-69 opening round loss to eventual champion Florida.

JSU rode SWAC Player of the Year Trey Johnson to a 21-14 record last season while finishing second in the regular season SWAC standings (12-6). The Tigers won the conference tournament and a NCAA Tourney invite with an 81-71 victory over Mississippi Valley State.

Johnson recently signed with the New Orleans Hornets after averaging 27.1 points and 4.5 rebounds as a senior.

However, the Tigers return four starters, including 6-foot-7 sophomore forward Grant Maxey (8.9 ppg, 5.7 rpg).

Junior center Jeremy Caldwell (7.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg), senior guard Catraiva Givens (5.3 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 143 assists) and senior guard Kay Martinez (5.1 ppg, 2.3 rpg) round out the top returners.

Coach Tevester Anderson begins his fifth season at the helm of the program. His Jackson State record sits at 63-65, though his win total has increased each year.

The Tigers will play two exhibition games before opening the regular season. JSU will host Springhill College on Nov. 1 and Miles College on Nov. 8.

JSU will also have a tough pre-SWAC schedule. JSU will travel to Baylor on Nov.11, BYU on Nov. 16 and Louisville on Nov. 18. The Tigers will host Southeastern Louisiana on Nov. 27 and UC Davis on Dec. 21.
