Southern University Accept WNIT Invite: Travels to Tulane on Thursday

Baton Rouge, La. - Southwestern Athletic Conference regular season women's basketball champion Southern University accepted an invitation Monday to the WNIT, an automatic berth for conference champions that do not win their respective tournament title. The Lady Jaguars will travel to New Orleans to face Tulane on Thursday in the opening round of the 64-team tournament.

There was some speculation as to whether or not the Lady Jaguars would accept the bid to the tournament when head coach Sandy Pugh announced in her post-game interview following the SWAC Tournament championship game that the school might not be able to afford to send the team to the post-season.

SU raises funds, draws Tulane in WNIT

One by one, they started to show up at Southern University with their checkbooks and wallets open, offering to support the women’s basketball team however they could. Thanks to a flood of 11th-hour donations from alumni and booster groups, the women’s basketball team collected enough money to cover last-minute travel costs for the WNIT.

That allowed the Jaguars to accept the automatic bid they received for winning the Southwestern Athletic Conference regular-season championship.

SU Jaguar coach Mitchell promises run game

When it comes to running backs, Southern coach Stump Mitchell is so very particular. He is, in fact, awfully demanding of them. It didn’t take long for Gary Hollimon to figure that out. “One day, when we (were) in spring practice, we were working on routes. I was running a route, and I kept messing it up,” Hollimon recalled.

The story is long, but here’s the short version: Hollimon, standing in the backfield, was supposed to run diagonally toward the sideline, then cut sharply toward the middle of the field. Only his cut wasn’t sharp. In fact, it wasn’t even a cut. “I rounded my route instead of sticking it,” Hollimon said. What, then, did Mitchell tell him? “You can’t print what he said,” Hollimon said, laughing. “The good version was that you have to plant and come out of your stick a little better.” So began a new era at Southern.

Fresh from an 11-year stint as an NFL running backs coach, Mitchell arrived at Southern seven months ago and joked that one of his new assistants, running backs coach Elvis Joseph, might have the toughest job of anyone on staff, because Mitchell will be watching closely.

Jackson State Centers help run streak to 6

They couldn't stay on fire forever. The Jackson State Tigers had blown out their last three opponents by shooting them out of the gym early with gaudy percentages. The shots weren't falling Monday, but JSU is quick to remind you the team is built for defense and rebounding first. Oh, and there was the we're-part-of-this-team-too performance out of the trio of Jackson State centers.

JSU made it six straight victories with a 63-53 win over Southern in front of an announced 1,451 at the Athletics and Assembly Center. The first-place Tigers (12-11, 10-1) moved above .500 for the first time and hold a 2 1/2-game cushion going into the most crucial road trip of the SWAC season - Prairie View (12-9, 7-3) and Texas Southern (11-11, 7-3). "We always know we've got to be prepared to play, got to contribute," JSU center Gertavian Blake said. "We basically have to step up."

Staying healthy big key for Southern senior WR Roberts

Everything is coming together for Southern University wide receiver Del Roberts. He enters his senior season as the veteran leader among the wideouts. He’s on course to graduate in psychology in December and then pursue his master’s, likely at SU, as he seeks his goal of becoming an occupational therapist. And he’s got a team that can — if he and others play up to their potential — make a run for the Southwestern Athletic Conference title.

A December with a diploma and a SWAC championship run looks like the perfect way to finish to Roberts.

“It’s something special,” Roberts said of his view of his senior year. “I’ve been playing football all my life. To say I graduated and be able to try to win a championship in my last year going out is a big deal. I’m just trying to do anything I can to help this team and this unit be the best it can be.”

Stewart ready to step in as SU’s 'go-to' receiver

Southern junior Juamorris Stewart has been around long enough to know the significance of his moving to the “X” receiver position as the school looks to replace Gerard Landry.

“In our system, the ‘X’ is the big man, the go-to position,” Stewart said. “It’s going to be a little different from last year, when I played on the side of the ‘X’ (at ‘H’). That’s the spot where you have to carry the team when you’re called on, the fourth downs and the third downs.

“It’s the big spot in our offense.”
