TSU thumps Central State to snap three-game losing streak
Houston, Texas -- Texas Southern was under the weather with a three-game losing streak. A homecoming game against winless Division II Central State (Ohio) provided the cure.
The Tigers shook off an early scare and pitched a shutout in the second half en route to beating the Marauders 42-11 before a crowd of 7,319 Saturday afternoon at Delmar Stadium.
Running back Marcus Wright rushed for a game-high 131 yards and a touchdown, and Martin Gilbert scored twice to help TSU (3-4) win for the first time since defeating Alcorn State on Sept. 24. The Tigers also got a strong contribution from their defense, which held Central State to 186 yards (54 in the second half) while recording a season-high eight sacks (equaling their total entering the game).
TSU's special teams unit chipped in with two blocked punts and its first two field goals of the season.

Jackson State and Tigers fan base are above the crowd
Jackson, Mississippi -- What some are proclaiming to be the "best show that the Jackson State Sonic Boom of the South Marching Band has performed in recent times," was missed by most of the nation. As usual, ESPNU cut away to Sports Center for the entire half-time period of the televised Texas Southern vs. JSU game on Sept. 29.
With over 26,000 in attendance (this has to be an HBCU attendance record for a Thursday night game) at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium, the JSU Sonic Boom of the South, the Air Raid offense, the Darkside defense, and Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger made it a memorable event for JSU/TSU fans.
Ruettiger, the inspiration for the 1993 Disney movie "Rudy" spoke at a luncheon at Jackson State University and gave the JSU Tigers football team an uplifting speech before the game.
The rest is history as the JSU Tigers manhandled Texas Southern's No.1 ranked defense (in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision) with 37 points in the second quarter on their way to a 58-13 rout.
The Texas Southern University Ocean of Soul Marching Band made the trip to Jackson, and also performed extremely well.
There is no other fan like a fervent JSU Tigers fan. No doubt, they have some of the most passionate fans in all of college football.

Prairie View tops rival TSU 37-34 on late field goal
Houston, TX - Prairie View A&M kicker Chris Barrick could not have picked a better time to make his first career field goal.
The redshirt freshman connected on a 36-yarder from the left hash mark with four seconds remaining to carry the Panthers to a stunning 37-34 come-from-behind victory over rival Texas Southern in the 27th annual Labor Day Classic on Saturday night in front of 12,567 at Delmar Stadium.
Barrick's boot capped a furious rally from a 14-point, fourth-quarter deficit and helped the Panthers (1-1, 1-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference) beat the Tigers for the fifth consecutive season and seventh time in the last eight years.
"I knew it was going in," Barrick said. "I wasn't worried about missing."

TSU Tigers upset in semifinals by Alabama State
GARLAND, TX - The Texas Southern Tigers believed they had the talent, drive and fortitude to get back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2003. They certainly had the bravado. But they didn't have quite enough time to get past Alabama State in the semifinals of the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament.
The top-seeded Tigers fell behind by a huge margin in the first half and came up short in their attempt at a furious second-half comeback, falling 73-66 to the fourth-seeded Hornets on Friday night at the Special Events Center.
Alabama State (16-17) moves on to face Grambling State in today's SWAC championship game. TSU, on the other hand, is destined for the National Invitation Tournament after winning the SWAC regular-season title but failing to capture the tournament championship and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA.

GARLAND, Texas -- The Alabama State men's basketball team dominated the first half against Texas Southern and held on for a 73-66 win, advancing to the Farmers Insurance SWAC Tournament Championship game. For the second straight game, the Hornets never trailed.
ASU jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game. After TSU responded with a 7-0 spurt of its own, the Hornets' Jeffery Middlebrooks and Ivory White hit a pair of 3-pointers pointers each.
Tremayne Moorer and Kenderek Washington also chipped in as ASU built a 19-point lead in the first half.

JSU lets 15-point lead slip away, takes hit in SWAC standings
The shot bounded off the side rim. Grant Maxey's head dipped. And Jackson State missed a monumental opportunity. Texas Southern overcame a 15-point second-half deficit to stun JSU 70-67 on Saturday night, clawing back into the game in the final moments to take control of the conference lead.
"To say the least, it was very disappointing," JSU coach Tevester Anderson said. "This game will hurt for a while because it was a big game." Huge.
It was a battle between the conference's No. 1 and No. 2 teams, a clash involving the third- and fourth-ranked squads in Division I black college basketball - both scrapping for a leg up in the league in front of an announced 2,002 crowd at the Athletics and Assembly Center.

Houston Dynamo/Texas Southern Tigers break ground on new downtown stadium
Texas Southern University President Dr. John M. Rudley
“One of our major initiatives was to bring a state-of-the-art stadium to Texas Southern University athletics. This new stadium has helped us reach that goal. It also gives us one of the best facilities in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. It’s a huge boost to the overall athletic program.”
Videographer: Khou.com
The Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer broke ground on February 5, 2011 on their $95 million dollar, 22,000-seat soccer stadium in downtown Houston's East End. Dignitaries such as AEG President and CEO Tim Leiweke, Dynamo equity partner Oscar de la Hoya, MLS President Mark Abbott, Houston Mayor Annise Parker, and Harris County Judge Ed Emmett participated in the groundbreaking festivities, while Dynamo all-time leading scorer Brian Ching kicked a ceremonial first goal on the stadium site.
Excavation of the site and construction of the stadium is expected to begin shortly, and the Dynamo hope to play their first game in the new stadium by mid-2012. The stadium is located in downtown Houston, within walking distance of Minute Maid Park, the George R. Brown Convention Center, and the Toyota Center. In addition to soccer games, the new stadium will host Texas Southern University football, concerts, boxing matches, and more.
The stadium will be operated by the Dynamo and leased from the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority. It is located closer to downtown than any other American stadium built for soccer and will be easily accessible to fans from the entire Houston area.
AEG Facilities, the world's largest venue manager, will manage the stadium on behalf of the Dynamo. The stadium will be included in AEG Facilities' worldwide network of more than 100 elite venues across five continents.
Renowned architectural firm Populous designed the stadium, which will be constructed by Houston-based Manhattan Construction and overseen by the ICON Venue Group. Additional companies working on the site are landscape architect Clark Condon, structural engineer Walter P. Moore, and civil engineer WGA, all companies based in Houston.

Blount's Harris leads Tuskegee into Mobile
Joshua Harris has always dreamed of owning something. He graduated in May from Tuskegee University with a 3.2 GPA and degrees in business administration and management science, and hopes to own a franchise one day. For now, the 6-1, 224-pound quarterback has owned opposing defenses as a starter for the Golden Tigers.
After replacing injured Jeremy Williams over the last four games last season, Harris has thrown for 1,543 yards, 4 touchdowns and 7 interceptions as a starter.
On Saturday at 1 p.m., the Blount High graduate will return to familiar territory when Tuskegee (2-1) travels to Mobile to battle Texas Southern (1-2) at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.

A&M's Jones, Texas Southern's Cole exchange words
HOUSTON, TX - Alabama A&M coach Anthony Jones and Texas Southern coach Johnnie Cole exchanged words after the game was over and had to be separated. Jones said Cole said something to him and everything became chaotic.
"He said I was disrespecting him and his program," Jones said. "When I asked him for an explanation, one of his guys starting pushing me. I didn't throw a punch. I didn't try to throw a punch. I asked Johnnie what he was talking about and I told him he was being disrespectful.
"He ran off and the guy pushed me and (A&M sports information director) Brandon (Willis). Johnnie came back and I told him we could talk and people started grabbing me."
HUNTSVILLE, AL - Madison County District Judge Lynn Sherrod knows what happens too often to high-school dropouts. They show up in her courtroom.
"There's a direct correlation between school performance and delinquent behavior," said Sherrod, who tries juvenile court cases. In the prison population, "an overwhelming percentage did not graduate from high school," she said.
With that in mind, Sherrod spearheaded a recent trip to Alabama A&M University for freshmen at Butler High School. About half the class of 180 spent the day attending workshops on decision making and preparing for college as well as touring the campus.
Offensive outburst fuels TSU past Alabama A&M
Texas Southern stumbled like a punch-drunk boxer for three quarters against Alabama A&M on Saturday, landing only occasional jabs. The Tigers, however, had plenty left in the tank to deliver the knockout blow in the final period.
With an aggressive defense leading the way, TSU forced two turnovers and broke open a close game with 20 points in the fourth quarter to sprint past the Bulldogs 32-9 before 6,347 at Delmar Stadium.

UConn Huskies take care of business, pummel Texas Southern
East Hartford, CT — UConn did exactly what you would expect it to do against an inferior opponent. The Huskies never gave Texas Southern a chance to breathe, scoring on their first five possessions, converting a pair of first-half turnovers into touchdowns and allowing the Tigers no room to roam on offense.
The result: After building a 45-0 halftime lead, UConn's reserves got the bulk of the work in the second half of a 62-3 victory over Texas Southern before 37,359 in the home opener at Rentschler Field.
In the first half, Jordan Todman rushed for 151 yards and three touchdowns, Zach Frazer threw a pair of touchdown passes and the UConn defense, which couldn't get off the field on third down a week earlier at Michigan, allowed only one first down. That's all you really need to take from this game, although you must applaud the Huskies for coming out prepared, not taking the Tigers lightly, and dominating from the start.

The game will serve as a home game for the Golden Tigers, giving Tuskegee six home dates. The Tuskegee University Marching Crimson Pipers and the Texas Southern University Ocean of Soul marching bands will perform at halftime.

Run game, defense key to success in SWAC
For all the things that made Southwestern Athletic Conference football fans shake their heads over the years — suspect leadership, lack of direction, noticeable drops in talent — die-hards could always take heart in one thing: On the field, their teams were innovators. You remember the 1980s and early ’90s, don’t you? Long before the explosion of the spread offense and five-receiver sets, SWAC schools put on a pretty good show.
Willie Totten. Fred McNair. Steve McNair. Eric Randall. They all aired it out.
Five years ago, Grambling’s Bruce Eugene threw 50 touchdowns in one season. But take a deeper look at the league today, and you’ll come to a startling conclusion. The trend has reversed. Everything old is new again. In the modern SWAC, championship-caliber teams play old-fashioned football. They establish the run, and they play good defense. This from a league that gave us Sammy White and Harold Carmichael and Jerry Rice? Believe it.

A Look At The Texas Southern Tigers
Texas Southern University head football coach Johnnie Cole has the Tigers moving in a winning direction.
Texas Southern University Tigers of the Southwestern Athletic Conference are coming to Connecticut vs. the U-Conn. Huskies.
When: Sept. 11, 2010, Rentschler Field. First meeting
Last season: 6-5, 5-2 SWAC
Quick facts about TSU: School colors are maroon and gray and the mascot's name is Pretty Baby II. TSU is an HBCU -- Historically Black College and Universities -- located in Houston. Its most famous football alumni is probably former Giants defensive end Michael Strahan, but the Tigers have actually produced 15 All-Americans. Some well-know players were Horace Young, Herman Driver, Ernest Calloway and Kenny Burroughs in the 1960s to Mike Holmes and Ernie Homes in the '70s and Donald Narcisse in the 1980s. The 6-5 finish was one of the best in the last 10 years and it included a 42-0 loss to Rutgers. The Tigers are coached by Johnnie Cole, a former quarterback at TSU in the 1980s. He took the job at his alma mater in 2008 (4-8).
Who's gone, who's back: The Tigers will lose four starters – total. In this case, who's gone isn't nearly as important as who's back. So who is back? How about all three leading ground gainers from 2009: running back Martin Gilbert (644 yards, six touchdowns) quarterback Arvell Nelson (325, four TDs) and RB Joseph Warren (142, one) return. Nelson threw for 2,392 yards but also threw 13 interceptions compared to 12 TDs. Most of the TDs went to Joseph Anderson, who had seven TD receptions. Anderson is back, too. Warren also returns kickoffs and averaged 18 yards on 17 returns in 2009. All three leading tacklers are back including linebacker Dejuan Fulghum (88 tackles), defensive back Robert Joseph (80) and Shomari Clemons, also a linebacker who had 63 tackles.
The UConn-Texas Southern rivalry: There isn't one and probably won't be. UConn raced to fill a nonconference void after it had scheduled Northeastern and was left scrambling when the school decided to drop football last year.

Texas Southern's Reid college career marked by tirade, injury
Texas Southern University quarterback Bobby Reid
While some potential NFL players are eagerly waiting for their name to be called on draft day, beginning April 22, most players are waiting just for a chance to make a team. Texas Southern quarterback Bobby Reid is one of those players just searching for an opportunity. Reid tore the ACL and meniscus in his right knee during the 2008 season with the Texas Southern Tigers, missed all of the 2009 season rehabbing it and now is ready to take his career to the next level.
Reid is mainly known for being the spark of Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy's "I'm a man. I'm 40" rant in 2007. After that season, Reid transferred to Texas Southern, after toying with the idea of entering the NFL Draft. His preparation has included working out at the Michael Johnson Performance Center in McKinney in February, participating in Pro Days at Texas Southern and LSU, and even throwing passes to former Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant during Bryant's workout for scouts last month in Lufkin. On Tuesday, Reid's agent, Brian Overstreet, said the quarterback has worked out for the Green Bay Packers and Houston Texans since LSU's Pro Day.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff wins SWAC title for first NCAA bid
Bossier City, LA - Tavaris Washington had 14 points and four rebounds as the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions took home the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament title with a 50-38 win over Texas Southern. Allen Smith had 11 points while Lebaron Weathers, George Davis and Savalance Townsend each chipped in with six points for the second-seeded Golden Lions (17-15), who are going to the NCAA Tournament on a tear as the team has won 11 of their last 12.
"This means a lot for our school and our fans," UAPB coach George Ivory said. "We worked all year to get to the Big Dance and now we can always brag that at least for one year, we got to The Dance."
DeAndre Hall had 14 points and 10 rebounds while Junior Treasure added 14 points for the fifth-seeded Tigers (17-16), who were looking to win their fifth tournament title. Texas-Southern held the early lead, but Arkansas-Pine Bluff chipped away and took a 12-9 lead on Washington's layup with 11 1/2 minutes left in the first half. The Tigers rallied with a 7-0 spurt, but then went almost the rest of the half without any points as the Golden Lions closed the half with a 12-2 run to take a 26-20 lead into the break. Texas-Southern cut its deficit to five points with 11 1/2 minutes to play in the second half, as Treasure's jumper made it a 36-31 game.

Mississippi Valley Delta Devils Deliver Statement to TSU
Texas Southern University head basketball coach Tony Harvey.
Mississippi Valley State basketball coach Sean Woods wanted this game in the worst way. His message to his players was well received by the Delta Devils as they blew out Texas Southern 62-44 Saturday night at the R.W. Harrison Complex in Itta Bena. Woods, whose team lost 74-73 at TSU four weeks ago, called this a "statement win." When asked why he put so much into this game, Woods didn't hold back: "They (TSU) are so arrogant. They've got a lot of talent, but, hey, so do we. I told our guys that we have just as much talent as they do. We've just got to put it all together and believe in ourselves."
With the win, MVSU moves to 8-19 overall, 7-7 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. TSU falls to 12-13, 8-5 in the SWAC. Valley led 30-23 at the break and controlled things for most of the second half. TSU made a little noise when it quickly trimmed an 11-point deficit to four. Travele Jones had a 3-point play to make it 40-36 with 11:38 left. But less than two minutes later, the Delta Devils pushed their lead to 15 before the Tigers knew what had hit them. Shannon Behling capped the home team's 11-0 run with a slam dunk and a layup in less than a 20-second span.

Texas Southern 30, Southern 25
Texas Southern University Coach Johnnie Cole ends second season with 6-5, 5-2 SWAC record.
A bitter way to end it all
HOUSTON — At the shocking, bitter 30-25 loss, Southern left tackle Chris Browne slammed his helmet so hard on the plastic turf that the inner pads came loose and flew in three directions. Minutes later, receivers coach Eric Dooley took a knee, led his group in prayer and rose with tears in his eyes. So did star wideout Juamorris Stewart. All four of Southern’s starting defensive backs stood in place, looking around at nothing in particular, stunned over what they’d seen Saturday. On a cold, clear afternoon inside the rickety Delmar Stadium, the Jaguars had nearly sewn up a victory over Texas Southern in the season finale, only to watch it fall apart.
In the fourth quarter, SU took the lead; botched a two-point conversion; missed a field goal; then rebounded to block a TSU field-goal attempt with 1:23 remaining — seemingly clinching a win. Finally, the Jaguars gave the ball back to TSU one more time. The Tigers were all too happy to take it. Arvell Nelson threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Joe Anderson with 16 seconds left, securing a nearly impossible 30-25 win over Southern that left players, coaches and fans in a haze.

Richardson: 'I think I'll be back'
HOUSTON — Saturday afternoon, in the cold air at Delmar Stadium, Southern football coach Pete Richardson had only a brief postgame huddle with his team. He told his players to concentrate on their academics, to get ready for the offseason strength-and-conditioning program, and to start preparing for next year. For Richardson, and for the Jaguars, this disappointing season was over. SU’s last-minute 30-25 loss to Texas Southern clinched a second straight year in which the Jaguars finished 6-5. Until late October, they had hoped for a berth in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship Game. Instead, thanks to Saturday’s loss, they finished fourth in the Western Division.
House makes mark with interceptions
HOUSTON — One of the nicest surprises of Southern’s season had one of his finest games in the season finale. Free safety Jason House, who moved from wide receiver during training camp, finished his first season with 10 interceptions, the most in the Football Championship Subdivision. House and Coastal Carolina’s Josh Norman started the weekend in a first-place tie for the national lead, though Norman’s season had already ended. House picked off two passes against Texas Southern. The first one came during the second quarter, when House stepped in front of an Arvell Nelson pass at the TSU 40-yard line, then weaved down the sideline and broke a tackle near the goal line for his first touchdown of the season.
TSU WR Anderson gets redemption
HOUSTON — As the final minute ticked away from the Delmar Stadium scoreboard Saturday night, Texas Southern sophomore receiver Joe Anderson thought he had missed out on his last opportunity. With his team trailing 25-23, Anderson couldn’t hold onto a pass in the end zone on a crucial third down, and on the next play, Southern blocked a TSU field-goal attempt and seemed to be on its way to victory with just 1:23 left. Little did Anderson know, his fortune would change quickly. After some questionable clock management by the Jaguars, TSU got the ball back with 55 seconds left and Anderson and quarterback Arvell Nelson didn’t waste any time getting to work.
How They Scored: Southern-TSU
First quarter
SOUTHERN — Isaiah Nelson 25-yard pass from Bryant Lee (kick blocked) at 13:30. DRIVE: 5 plays, 58 yards, 1:23. KEY PLAYS: On the first play from scrimmage, Lee runs right on a designed play for a 19-yard gain. On the touchdown, Nelson gets behind the defense and dives into the end zone, stretching the ball across the goal line. TSU’s Michael Shelton blocks the PAT. Southern 7, Texas Southern 0.
SU gets close, but falls to 0-8
NACOGDOCHES, Texas — After seven losses, the Southern University men’s basketball team got a glimpse of the light at the end of the tunnel Saturday when it took on Central Arkansas in the in the Etech Lumberjack Classic. Anchored by a four-point play, Jaguars guard Jazz Williams reeled off seven straight points and Norm Nixon Jr. stole an inbounds pass and drove for a layup that pulled Southern within three of the Bears with 8:25 to play. But that was as close as the Jaguars (0-8) got before dropping a 79-63 decision. UCA’s Tadre Sheppard scored inside to trigger a 14-2 run that turned things back in the Bears’ favor and they never looked back. Chris Poellnitz led Central Arkansas (3-5) with 21 points and Sheppard added a career-high 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Cole has Texas Southern on cusp of winning season
Prairie View A&M’s run to a berth in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship game isn’t the conference’s only feel-good story coming out of Texas this season. Texas Southern is also having a breakthrough season, which has largely gone unnoticed. The Tigers can end the year with their first winning record since 2000 with a victory over Southern in Houston on Saturday. A 6-5 record wouldn’t warrant a second thought for a number of programs. But if you’re a team that has gone 20-68 the previous eight seasons — with a pair of winless campaigns in the mix — 6-5 is something to get excited about. “The first wining season (since 2000) would be big,’’ Johnnie Cole, Texas Southern’s second-year coach and a former quarterback for the Tigers, said. “Winning is contagious, just like losing."
