Owensboro, Kentucky -- The lack of numbers is starting to catch up to Kentucky Wesleyan College's football team. The Panthers had no answer for Central State in a matchup of winless teams on Saturday at Steele Stadium.
Jeffrey Brooks ran for two touchdowns and threw for a third as Central State broke an eight-game losing streak and beat the Panthers 36-0.
“I thought we would be very competitive in this game, but it didn't work out that way,” KWC coach Brent Holsclaw said. “We're having huge lack of depth issues.” The Panthers are having to patch holes along the offensive line and in their linebacking corps.
“Guys are injured and out there playing,” Holsclaw said.
Brooks hit Chris Murray-Towns with a 42-yard touchdown pass to put Central State up 14-0 with 10:49 left in the first half. Brooks scored on a 15-yard run and a 2-yard run in the third and fourth quarters, pushing Central State to a 29-0 advantage.

TSU thumps Central State to snap three-game losing streak
Houston, Texas -- Texas Southern was under the weather with a three-game losing streak. A homecoming game against winless Division II Central State (Ohio) provided the cure.
The Tigers shook off an early scare and pitched a shutout in the second half en route to beating the Marauders 42-11 before a crowd of 7,319 Saturday afternoon at Delmar Stadium.
Running back Marcus Wright rushed for a game-high 131 yards and a touchdown, and Martin Gilbert scored twice to help TSU (3-4) win for the first time since defeating Alcorn State on Sept. 24. The Tigers also got a strong contribution from their defense, which held Central State to 186 yards (54 in the second half) while recording a season-high eight sacks (equaling their total entering the game).
TSU's special teams unit chipped in with two blocked punts and its first two field goals of the season.

Central State overwhelmed by N.C. Central, 42-3, in Cleveland Classic
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Central State can't afford many things while it tries to rebuild a once dominant football program. The school in Wilberforce, Ohio is besieged by financial woes, with only 13 scholarships for its 70-man squad.
The absence of one of those players on Saturday created a void the Marauders were never able to fill. Without injured starting quarterback Jeffrey Brooks, Central State could not get on track, or into the end zone, as it fell, 42-3, to North Carolina Central at the Cleveland Classic at Cleveland Browns Stadium.
The Marauders (0-2) were held to 208 total yards of offense, 89 in the first half.
"It always hurts when your three-year starter is out," said Central State coach E.J. Junior about Brooks. "Jeff brings leadership. He knows the offense. He's a competitor. He would've done better, but he would've been under the same fire from North Carolina Central's defensive line."

N.C. Central bounces back
CLEVELAND -- N.C. Central coach Henry Frazier III had expected his Eagles to perform better Saturday than they did a week earlier in a 48-0 loss to Rutgers. They did not disappoint Frazier.
For the Eagles, all things considered, played as their coach had hoped. His defenders swarmed to the ball, his offense shoved the Central State defense up and down the football field and his Eagles dominated the Marauders en route to a 42-3 win in the 2011 Cleveland Classic. His team's performance, however, was hardly spotless.
"We still were a little sloppy," said Frazier, in his first season at NCCU. "We still committed a lot of penalties, and we had six or seven dropped passes." Perhaps still unnerved by the Rutgers loss, his Eagles dropped three passes in their first two possessions. Those drops, which led to punts, cost them close to 100 yards of offense and ruined opportunities to grab a quick lead.

Central State displays fight in ‘Classic’ defeat
Dayton, OH - Down by 25 points to Kentucky State in the closing minutes of the Dayton Classic at Welcome Stadium Sunday night, Central State took over the football at its own 6-yard line.
From there, many of the Marauder players couldn’t see the riches of the far end zone, much less anything else except the big loss about to be hung on them in their season opener. Some guys on the CSU bench were hanging their heads, a couple were in tears, but then there was quarterback Jeff Brooks, one of just a handful of seniors on his baby-faced team.
He was a man possessed. He had been sacked several times during the night and had come limping to the sidelines more than once, but now he was back on the field, willing life into his offensive troops as he began to make play after play.
“I’m never gonna quit on these guys ...

A heightened sense of excitement is in the air for Alabama A&M’s home opener Saturday against Central State (Ohio) in the inaugural Louis Crews Classic. A&M foe craves its glory days
There was a time when Central State University had one of the better small-college football programs in the country. The Marauders, under former head coach Billy Joe, played in the NCAA Division II national championship game in 1983 and finished runner-up to South Dakota State.
Central State dropped down to the NAIA level, and Joe guided the Marauders to national championships in 1990 and 1992 and after he left to go to Florida A&M, Rick Comegy, currently the head coach at Jackson State, guided the team to another title in 1995. Al West, in his third season, was there when Joe laid the foundation. Saturday, Central State visits Louis Crews Stadium for a game against Alabama A&M, also winless.
