Southern's football team bracing for a tough test in Jackson State

Baton Rouge, LA - After a 21-6 victory against Alabama A&M last weekend, Southern is preparing for the biggest home game in Coach Stump Mitchell's two seasons, as Jackson State comes to A.W. Mumford Stadium for a 6 p.m. game Saturday.

"It's going to be a big game," Southern quarterback Dray Joseph said. "No matter where the game is located, when it's Jackson State versus Southern, it's important. We could be playing this at a high school stadium, and the magnitude of the game would still be great."

Jackson State (2-0, 0-0 SWAC) was picked to win the SWAC's Eastern Division in the preseason and returns Walter Payton Award finalist and preseason SWAC Player of the Year Casey Therriault, a senior quarterback.

Therriault, who passed for nearly ...

Valley Delta Devils readies for Alcorn Braves

ITTA BENA, Miss. — Karl Morgan knows what it feels like to be a winner. At North Alabama, as the team's defensive coordinator, he helped lead the Lions to a 55-10 record during his five-year stint. But after 14 games at Mississippi Valley State, the Delta Devil head coach is experiencing the other end of the football spectrum.

MVSU (0-2) enters Saturday's game at Alcorn State (0-2) on a 13-game losing skid that dates back to November 2009. "It's an adjustment," said Morgan, "that I hope I don't get too used to."

Like last year, Valley has yet to score a touchdown as they enter their third game of the season. The Devils' nine points have come thanks to the foot of Carlos Sanchez, who converted three field goals in their season-opening loss to Alabama State.

Morgan, who is in his second year at the helm, said last Saturday's 39-0 loss to Murray State took a toll on him — even more than it did his players.

Alabama State aims to change fortunes vs. GSU

Montgomery, AL -Listening to Alabama State coach Reggie Barlow could lead you to believe Grambling was the team taking the field Saturday in Montgomery, Ala., that had been in last December's SWAC title game.

In actuality, Texas Southern ended the Tigers' season in November and clinched the Western Division, then dismissed the Hornets for the championship. Barlow still sees Grambling and coach Doug Williams, returning to the program after a seven-season hiatus, as one of the kings of the SWAC castle he and his team are trying to storm.

"If you wanna be the best and you wanna be tops in the conference, you always have to go by who's the big-time program and who's had the success," Barlow said. "Grambling's name speaks for itself.

Game not meaningless for Southern, Jackson State

Baton Rouge, LA - Looking for unique circumstances? Saturday night, go ahead and take a peek inside A.W. Mumford Stadium. It’ll be a virtual treasure trove.

Sure, Southern and Jackson State - two old archrivals, two of the brand names in black college football - have faced each other 55 times. But they’ve never played in a game quite like this one.

This summer, Southwestern Athletic Conference presidents and commissioners voted to ban SU and JSU from their league’s championship game - after the NCAA made both teams ineligible for postseason play because of their continued poor showings on the Academic Progress Rate. Three months before the season began, the Tigers and Jaguars already knew they’d wind up ringless, no matter how well they played.

So go ahead. When Southern (1-1, 1-0) hosts Jackson State (2-0, 0-0) at 6 p.m. Saturday, feel free to call it the “IneligiBowl.”

SU pass defense to get test

Baton Rouge, LA - Although Southern’s pass defense has been relatively solid through two games - opposing quarterbacks have completed only 45 percent of their throws - second-year coach Stump Mitchell said he’s still looking for more big plays from his secondary.

More to the point: When the Jaguars (1-1, 1-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference) face Jackson State (2-0, 0-0) at 6 p.m. Saturday in A.W. Mumford Stadium, Mitchell would love to see some interceptions. During a 21-6 victory over Alabama A&M last week, SU had 11 pass breakups, but no interceptions.

The Jaguars are, in fact, still searching for their first takeaway this season.

Alabama A&M: Bulldogs, Golden Tigers both looking for wins

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - Alabama A&M and Tuskegee will both be looking to break into win column Saturday when the two teams collide in the second annual Louis Crews Classic.

The Bulldogs are 0-2 after losing to Hampton and Southern, while the Golden Tigers are 0-1 after losing their home opener Saturday to Langston. Kickoff is 6 p.m. at Louis Crews Stadium.

"Tuskegee is going to bring a good football team in here," A&M coach Anthony Jones said. "They lost their opener, so they're going to be desperate and fired up about the opportunity to play us. "We've got to be ready to play or we're not going to like the outcome."

Southern tops Alabama A&M

Baton Rouge, LA - Dray Joseph believed he was a better quarterback. He felt it.

In the days after Joseph and the Southern football team lost an ugly season opener, Joseph said he focused on his playbook and trusted his instincts. He also prayed.

Saturday at A.W. Mumford Stadium, hours before the Jaguars began Southwestern Athletic Conference play with a stunning 21-6 victory over Alabama A&M, the sophomore quarterback wrote a biblical verse, Mark 9:23, on one of his taped wrists. Everything is possible for one who believes.

Saturday night, Joseph believed in himself, and his teammates believed in each other.

It certainly showed.

In a virtuoso performance that stunned almost as many Southern fans as it did the visiting team, the Jaguars ripped apart Alabama A&M’s secondary for 332 passing yards ...

Southern notes: Jaguars end skid at 7 games

If you believe Southern football coach Stump Mitchell, the results of Saturday’s 21-6 victory over Alabama A&M were not surprising at all. Not to him. “No,” the second-year coach said. “Last week was shocking.”

Mitchell was referring to last week’s season-opening 33-7 loss at Tennessee State, during which the Jaguars were often manhandled at the line of scrimmage.

At the time, it dropped Mitchell’s record to 2-10 at Southern. It also extended the team’s losing streak to seven games, including a six-game slide to end last year.

“It was only a one-game losing streak for this team,” Mitchell said. “But for me, it was seven or eight, or whatever it was. It was too long.”

QB Mason takes road less traveled

Huntsville, AL - At the end of every summer workout and practice in the grueling heat, Alabama A&M quarterback Deaunte Mason and his teammates closed with this: “SWAC Champs.”

For Mason, and his teammates, that is the ultimate goal. Instilling this motto, as Mason characterizes it, made A&M shake off the feeling of a 3-8 season in 2010. The 21-year-old Mason’s journey to Huntsville, Ala., was a road he didn’t expect to travel.

Named Tennessee’s Mr. Football for Class 3A in 2008, Mason passed for 2,375 yards, rushed for 1,052 yards and scored 35 touchdowns as a senior at Pearl-Cohn High School, in Nashville, Tenn. His strong senior season garnered a scholarship from the University of Kentucky.

SU defense gets rid of bad taste

Baton Rouge, LA - It was a collaborative effort Saturday night as Southern University vanquished its seven-game losing streak with a 21-6 win over Southwestern Athletic Conference rival Alabama A&M.

The Southern offense scored two pacesetting touchdowns in the first 7 minutes, and the Jaguars defense responded with just as much heart.

A week earlier, Southern’s defense surrendered more than 300 yards on the ground as it was manhandled by Tennessee State’s physical offensive line. But the defense showed its resiliency and held the Bulldogs to just 60 yards on the ground.

“We wanted to control the clock, and keep (Alabama A&M) off the field some,” Southern coach Stump Mitchell said of the Jaguars’ approach. “Last week, Tennessee State was just much bigger than us.”

UAPB Golden Lions rally to take a 27-20 victory over Alcorn State

PINE BLUFF, Ark.- After falling behind 20-10 going into intermission the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff football team (1-1, 1-0 SWAC) knew they would have to put together a solid second half in order to capture a win over the Alcorn State Braves (0-2, 0-2 SWAC).

The Golden Lions did just that rallying with 17 unanswered points in the games' final two quarters capturing a thrilling come from behind victory over Alcorn State on Saturday night.

The spark UAPB needed came in the form of a dominating running game that found new life in the second half. In all Arkansas-Pine Bluff rushed for 238 rushing yards on 47 attempts led by Adrian Moore's 130 yard rushing performance.

“Moore, Jones, and Jenkins played outstanding tonight, said UAPB head coach Monte Coleman. “And our defense was able to rise to the challenge that we set before them at halftime.”

The Golden Lions defense continued to apply pressure to Alcorn State's Brandon Bridge in the second half keeping the quick, agile sophomore on the run the majority of the evening.

“Bridge is an amazing athlete,” said Coleman. “He actually got my vote for Preseason Player of the Year. We told our guys that in order to be successful against him pressure would be the key and we were able to generate that pressure with consistency in the second half.”

Prairie View tops rival TSU 37-34 on late field goal

Houston, TX - Prairie View A&M kicker Chris Barrick could not have picked a better time to make his first career field goal.

The redshirt freshman connected on a 36-yarder from the left hash mark with four seconds remaining to carry the Panthers to a stunning 37-34 come-from-behind victory over rival Texas Southern in the 27th annual Labor Day Classic on Saturday night in front of 12,567 at Delmar Stadium.

Barrick's boot capped a furious rally from a 14-point, fourth-quarter deficit and helped the Panthers (1-1, 1-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference) beat the Tigers for the fifth consecutive season and seventh time in the last eight years.

"I knew it was going in," Barrick said. "I wasn't worried about missing."

Southern Heritage Classic: Jackson State rallies to win shootout over Tennessee State

JSU's Therriault MVP after throwing three TDs

Memphis, TN - The way Tennessee State and Jackson State were marching up and down the field in the first half of Saturday’s Southern Heritage Classic, JSU coach Rick Comegy was ready to pull out the Dramamine.

Fortunately, the Tigers defense settled down in the second half and JSU managed to erase a 24-21 halftime deficit to beat TSU, 35-29, in front of 43,532 at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. “What a see-saw,” Comegy said. “I think I was getting motion sickness it was so up and down. I’m glad we came out with the win.”

The win is JSU’s (2-0) second straight over TSU after dropping the previous seven meetings. Like most of their meetings, this one came down to the wire. JSU led 28-26 and was hoping to take some time off the clock when it took over from its own 11 with 6:34 to play. But a 17-yard pass from Casey Therriault to Rico Richardson gave the Tigers some breathing room.

A 22-yard strike to Keenan Tillman put the Tigers in TSU territory at the 41. That set up a 39-yard run by running back Tommy Gooden, who was tripped up at the 2-yard line.

Air Raid returns

Rico Richardson spiked the ball into the Liberty Bowl Stadium turf, the Sonic Boom blasted their horns and Jackson State had a second straight win in the Southern Heritage Classic.

Richardson's 21-yard touchdown pass from scrambling quarterback Casey Therriault in the final minutes sealed Jackson State's 35-29 win over Tennessee on Saturday night.

The touchdown toss gave JSU a nine-point advantage with 2 minutes, 4 seconds left and capped quite an offensive performance from a unit that struggled just last week against tiny Concordia College.

Behind a rebuilt offensive line - featuring two new starters - Therriault threw for 337 yards and three scores, and the Tigers had two running backs, Tommy Gooden and B.J. Lee, break 65 yards as they rolled up a whopping 477 yards of offense.

"Classic" Not Just A Game

Memphis, TN - Kick off to the 22nd annual Southern Heritage Classic comes later in the evening but the festivities started long before the teams ever hit the field. It all started with the folks lined up along Park Avenue in Orange Mound. People flooded the streets this weekend taking in the sights and sounds of the Classic parade.

Mamie Harmon said, "I come every year. I owned a house on Dunmoore. I lived over there for 7 years. I watched the parade. Now I live over here and I've been here 4 years and I made every parade."

They come to see the dancers, the high stepping bands including the show stopping Sonic Boom band from Jackson State University and the Aristocrat of bands from Tennessee State University. For the crowd attending, it's a sneak peek of the battle of the bands they hope to see later on the football field. However, the parade is proof the weekend is more than just about the game.

The Tennessee State University Aristocrat of Bands visited the LeBonheur Children's Hospital of Memphis Tennnessee during their Southern Heritage Classic weekend. The annual visit gives the children inspiration and motivation on Friday afternoon, while allowing the students in the band the opportunity to perform music and give personal time and cheer to the children, before playing in Saturday's parade and football game. Eastern Michigan beats Alabama State Hornets 14-7

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Dominique Sherrer ran for a touchdown and Eastern Michigan piled up 336 rushing yards on the way to a 14-7 victory over Alabama State on Saturday.

Sherrer finished with 111 yards on 16 carries, while Javonti Greene ran 22 times for 146 yards for the Eagles (2-0), who held Alabama State of the FCS to minus-13 yards rushing. Eagles quarterback Alex Gillett ran for 74 yards -- including a 58-yard run that set up Sherrer's 6-yard score in the third quarter -- and threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Nick Olds for the game's only first-half points.

The Hornets offense moved the ball often into Eagles' territory but could score just once time in five drives. The Hornets (1-1) got on the board on Devin Dominguez's 22-yard pass to T.C. McWilliams. Defensively, ASU allowed just two scoring drives and made two takeaways.

Eastern Rushing Offense Rolls in 14-7 Win

YPSILANTI, Mich. — The Eastern Michigan University football team combined a strong rushing game with a stingy defensive effort to record a 14-7 win over a visiting Alabama State University team here Saturday afternoon, Sept.10, in Rynearson Stadium.

The victory gave Head Coach Ron English's Eagles a perfect 2-0 record to start the season, the first time since the 1989 campaign that an EMU football squad won its first two games to start a season.

The EMU rushing game was high energy for the second week in a row with both senior tailback Dominique Sherrer (Cincinnati, Ohio-Colerain) and sophomore tailback Javonti Greene (West Palm Beach, Fla.-Royal Palm Beach) each going over the century mark with Greene gaining 146 yards on 22 rushes and Sherrer adding 111 yards on 16 rushes.

In addition to the two tailbacks, junior quarterback Alex Gillett (Green Springs, Ohio-Clyde) added 74 yards rushing on eight carries. Gillett completed 7-of-19 passes for 61 yards and one score.

Both Sherrer and Greene also had 100-plus yards yards last weekend, Sept. 4, in EMU's season-opening win over Howard University.

Hawkins knows Southern University has to get back up

Baton Rouge, LA - What was it that Muhammad Ali, Vince Lombardi and Rocky Balboa used to say? They each phrased it a little differently, but the line always went something like this: There’s no shame in getting knocked down. The shame comes when you don’t get back up.

Charles Hawkins knew that. Southern University’s junior wide receiver has known it for a while now. So last weekend, after Tennessee State safety Joseph Wylie leveled him for a second time in the Jaguars’ ugly season-opening loss, leaving Hawkins on the ground with stabbing pains in his chest, rib cage and back, the young wideout knew the deal.

Eventually, he had to get back up. And eventually, he got back in the game.

At 6 p.m. Saturday in A.W. Mumford Stadium, when the Jaguars (0-1) open Southwestern Athletic Conference play against Alabama A&M (0-1), they’ll try to do the same.

IT'S SHOWTIME: Grambling, ULM game fraught with expectations

Monroe, LA - Grambling coach Doug Williams said he's not a fan of playing this game. ULM coach Todd Berry said he and his team are excited to play, but acknowleged the pressures that the program and the university are under to put on a good "event."

These are just some of the questions that are surrounding Grambling's and ULM's second meeting in school history.

"We really don't have an advantage going to ULM," Williams said. "Eddie Robinson felt like he never had anything to gain by playing Louisiana Tech, (ULM) or LSU, and that's when we could compete with anybody in the country. ULM is an (FBS) school now with more scholarships."

But with all the hullabaloo of game week now over, it comes down to Saturday's 6 p.m. kickoff in Malone Stadium.

Alabama A&M: Fuller named Bulldogs' running backs coach

Coach Andy Fuller
HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - Andy Fuller, who has been a part-time assistant coach at Alabama A&M over the last five years under head coach Anthony Jones, has moved up to full-time status. Fuller, who has served as the Bulldogs' tight ends coach over the years, is now the running backs coach. His new position became official late last week.

"I want to thank Coach Jones for this opportunity," Fuller said. "I'm going to be the best coach I can be and help us win the SWAC championship." Fuller replaces Errol Jones, who left just before training camp began to become the boys basketball coach and assistant football coach at Deshler High School.

Murray State Racers Travel to face Mississippi Valley

Murray State (0-1, 0-0 OVC) vs. Mississippi Valley State (0-1, 0-1 SWAC)
Time: Sept. 10 - 4 p.m.
Location: Rice-Totten Stadium - Itta Bena, Miss.
TV: Racer TV Network and ESPN3 (Internet)

STORY LINES
The Racers look to avoid their second-straight 0-2 as they travel to Mississippi Valley State for the first meeting between to two schools. It also marks the first time Murray State will play a team from the SWAC.

Murray State running back Mike Harris became just the second Racer back to go over 100 yards against an FBS opponent when he rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown against Louisville. He carried the ball 26 times in the opener, the second-most attempts in his career.

The Racer defense held Louisville scoreless over the final 43:20 of the game. MSU held the Cardinals to just 131 second-half yards and forced two turnovers in each half.

Saturday's game will mark the first of five televised games on the Racer Television Network. The network will also carry the games against Georgia State (Oct. 8), Eastern Illinois (Oct. 15), Tennessee Tech (Nov. 5) and Southeast Missouri (Nov. 19).

The Game
The Racers play their second non-conference road game in as many weeks as they travel to face Mississippi Valley State on Sept. 10 at 4 p.m. The game will be carried on the Racer Television Network, as well ESPN3.

vs. Mississippi Valley State
The contest between the two schools will be the first meeting on the gridiron. It is also the first road trip to Mississippi since the Racers played Mississippi State in 2005.

vs. the SWAC
The contest also marks the first time Murray State will play a team from the SWAC.

Racers Receiving Votes
The Racers continue to receive national recognition as they are receiving votes in both the national polls for the second-straight week. MSU moved up a couple spots in each poll, and now rank 29th in both polls.

On Grass
The game against Mississippi Valley State will mark the only time this season the Racers will play on grass. Last season, MSU lost 21-20 to Central Arkansas in their only game on natural grass.

Two Racers Return Home
Two members of the Racer football team will have a homecoming of sorts as they will be playing within two hours of their hometowns. Safety Darius Buck is from Vicksburg (2 hours) and linebacker Sam Small is from Winona (49 minutes).

Fewest Points vs FBS
Murray State held its own against Louisville as the Racers only allowed 21 points, including no points in the second half. It is the fewest points allowed to an FBS team since the Racers tied Memphis 10-10 in 1985.

Defense Forces Turnovers in Opener
The Racers defense forced four turnovers in the season opener against Louisville. It marked the fourth-straight season that the Racers forced at least two turnovers in the season opener.

Two-Way Barnett
Senior Dexter Barnett proved his value to the team in the opener as he played on both sides of the ball against Louisville. Barnett, who is a receiver, also saw time at corner in the fourth quarter. Throughout camp, Barnett spent time working at safety and corner to provide depth in the secondary.

Davis Gets Two
Senior Darrell Davis was pushed into action early in the contest against Louisville and responded in a major way. The St. Louis, Mo., native intercepted a pass in the first half and recovered a fumble in the second half.

Scouting Mississippi Valley State
The Delta Devils enter the contest with an overall record of 0-1, and an 0-1 record in the SWAC. MVSU opened its season at home against Alabama State, falling 41-9. The Delta Devils rushed for 155 yards and threw for 172 yards.  The defense allowed 123 yards on the ground and 196 yards through the air. Quarterback Garrick Jones led the offense by rushing for 113 yards and passing for 121 more yards. Turnovers were the problem in the opener as the Delta Devils lost five fumbles and threw two interceptions. Wide receiver Paul Cox caught four passes for 86 yards, while Kenneth Dabney had four grabs for 43 yards.

Dabney also returned seven kickoffs for 121 yards. Kicker Carlos Sanchez supplied the points as he went 3-of-4 on field goal attempts, connecting from 30, 32 and 32. Linebacker Terrell Johnson led the defense with eight tackles, including a tackle-for-loss. Rico Mazique also added eight stops. Javaris Fritz registered two sacks and blocked a field goal.

Whitehead Impresses in Opener
Transfer Julian Whitehead quietly went about his business Thursday evening and led the Racer defense with nine tackles. The junior has quickly made himself a leader of the defense.

Defense Posts 2nd Half Shutout
The Murray State defense entered the season as a question mark, but they made their presence known in the season opener as they shutout Louisville over the final 43:20 of the game. It was the first time the defense pitched a second-half shutout since Oct. 4, 2008 against Austin Peay (APSU scored a safety in 3rd quarter). The last time the Racers allowed no points in the second half was the 2007 season opener against Lambuth.

Defense Limits Cards in 2nd Half
The Racer defense dominated the second half as they limited Louisville to just 131 yards of offense in the second half. The defense also forced a pair of turnovers in the second half.

Harris Carries Load
Senior Mike Harris carried the load for the offense in the season opener as he carried the ball 26 times against Louisville. The 26 carries are the second most in his career, behind only his 30 attempts against Missouri State last season.

Eastern Michigan Eagles hosts Alabama State Hornets

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- With a season-opening 41-9 victory over Howard University under its belt, the Eastern Michigan University football team turns its attention to Alabama State University. Saturday's, Sept. 10, kickoff is scheduled for 1:06 p.m. at Rynearson Stadium.

The Eagles and the Hornets are meeting for the first time on the gridiron. In fact, Eastern Michigan has never played a team from the state of Alabama in its 120-year history. Meanwhile, Alabama State, the reigning Southwestern Athletic Conference East Division champions, will be playing its first Football Bowl Subdivision (Division I-A) opponent.

STRIVING FOR A 2-0 START: Eastern Michigan will look for its first 2-0 start to a campaign since the 1989 season, when the then-Hurons downed Kent State University, Sept. 2, and Youngstown State University, Sept. 9. That season the Eagles posted a 5-0-1 record through its first six games en route to a 7-3-1 finish.

COACH ENGLISH: EMU Head Coach Ron English got to sing the fight song and celebrate a victory at home following the 32-point decision over Howard, Sept. 4. It also marked the first time under the Eagles' third-year mentor that the Green and White held a team under 250 yards of total offense, limiting the Bison to just 201 yards (96 rush; 105 pass). Conversely, Eastern Michigan rolled up 441 total yards of offense, including 326 yards rushing, and advanced into Howard territory on 10 of its 14 drives.

WINNING STREAK: The Eagles have posted a 7-3 record against Football Championship Subdivision opponents since the 2001 campaign. However, EMU is currently riding a three-game winning streak that includes a 38-15 decision over Howard, Sept. 22, 2007, a 52-0 victory over Indiana State, Aug. 28, 2008, and a 41-9 win against Howard, Sept. 4, 2011.

During the 10-game span, the Green and White have averaged 31.2 points and 416.1 total yards of offense per game, while giving up an average of 22.0 points and 356.8 yards per contest.

ASU Hornets hyped in taking on MAC team

Montgomery, AL - It's not the type of big-name opponent you would circle on the schedule. But Alabama State's trip this weekend to face Eastern Michigan represents the first time the Hornets have ever ventured out of the state to face a Football Bowl Subdivision (Division I-A) opponent.

It gives the reigning Southwestern Athletic Conference East Division champions a chance to gauge their brand of football with a team from other regions of the country.

"It's a good opportunity, not only for the program, but as individuals you want to compare yourself to those type of guys that are playing at a bigger level," said Hornets receiver Nick Andrews. "You want to see how well you match up with those guys. It means a lot more. In the SWAC, we're basically at a lower level, so they're looking down on us since we're a historically black college. We just have to go out there and play football," Andrews said.

The two teams have never met in any sport, but ...
