Arkansas - Pine Bluff DC Hampton resigns, headed to Western Kentucky

Arkansas-Pine Bluff has officially announced in a press release that Alonzo Hampton has resigned from the school to take a position with WKU. The release did not say that Hampton has officially joined the Toppers yet, and no official word has come from WKU.

WKU may have filled one of its two football coaching vacancies.

David Harten, the Arkansas-Pine Bluff football beat writer for the Pine Bluff Commercial, reported Tuesday that UAPB defensive coordinator Alonzo Hampton has resigned from the school to join WKU as defensive backs coach.

WKU interviews Hampton for DC job

The Daily News confirmed with a source Monday that Arkansas-Pine Bluff defensive coordinator Alonzo Hampton has interviewed for the open defensive backs coaching position at Western Kentucky.

Hampton - a Louisiana-Monroe product - spent the past four seasons at Arkansas-Pine Bluff, with 2010 being his first as the team’s defensive coordinator.

Before becoming the team’s defensive coordinator, Hampton served as cornerbacks and defensive backs coach for UAPB. Prior to that, Hampton served as head coach at Dumas High School in Arkansas for two seasons.

Troy reserve QB Parker transferring to Texas Southern

Dantavious Parker, 5-11/208 quarterback from Columbus High School (Miami, Florida), narrowed his choices to TSU and Florida A&M, Coach Blakeney said.

Rising junior quarterback Dantavious Parker is transferring to Texas Southern University, Troy University head coach Larry Blakeney confirmed Wednesday night. But Blakeney left the door open for Parker, a dynamic threat at quarterback, to return. “He has the opportunity to come back if he gets there and doesn’t like what he sees,” Blakeney said. “I told him that.”

Parker played as a reserve for the past two seasons behind Levi Brown, but broke his right (non-throwing) collarbone in Troy’s first scrimmage this spring on a running play. He was competing with juniors Jamie Hampton and Greg Jenkins and redshirt freshman Corey Robinson for the starting spot, but the injury knocked him out for the spring. Coaches said they have narrowed the race down to two with Hampton and Robinson as the frontrunners.

“I met with him and talked to his mama more than once or twice about this,” Blakeney said. “We talked about his education and what he means to this team as a leader and a player, but he couldn’t get past the chance of wanting to be a starting quarterback. Texas Southern and coach (Johnnie) Cole told him he had a good chance to compete to be a starter. “We couldn’t guarantee him that he had that chance, but I’ll say this. He is a special kid and I hate to lose him.”

Bethune-Cookman eliminated 12-6 in Gainesville Regional by FAU

GAINESVILLE, FL — Sean Bukovich and Anthony Mesa drove in three runs apiece and Florida Atlantic eliminated Bethune-Cookman from the NCAA tournament with a 12-6 victory. The Owls (36-23) pounded out 18 hits, including eight for extra bases, and advanced to play Oregon State or Florida in the Gainesville regional Sunday. The Wildcats (35-22), back on the field about 12 hours after losing in the opening round, stranded five runners in scoring position and hit into two double plays. They fell to 1-20 in regional play.

After not getting key hits in Friday’s opening 6-4 loss to the Beavers, Saturday everyone was hitting with men on, as eight Owls had at least one RBI in the game. The Owls are now 57-15 all-time versus the Wildcats, and Bethune still has just one win in its 11 regional appearances. Hats off to starter Ryan Garton, who did not wilt in the scorching heat of a 1 p.m. start, going 7 innings and giving up 5 runs on 11 hits to preserve the bullpen for Sunday’s must-win game. Climbing out of loser’s bracket will be tough. If Florida wins, the Owls would need to beat the Beavers and then beat the Gators in two straight games.

Alabama A&M falls to ULM 37-15

A&M falls to 0-3 but is proud of its showing at major-college La.-Monroe

MONROE, La. - Anthony Jones walked out of Malone Stadium Friday night with his head held high. So did his Alabama A&M football team. The Bulldogs gave Sun Belt Conference member Louisiana-Monroe all it could handle for almost three quarters before the Warhawks pulled away down the stretch. When it was over, ULM ran off to celebrate its 37-15 victory, but A&M walked away with a renewed sense of confidence.

"My team went through a lot to play this game," Jones said after his team fell to 0-3 for the first time since 1992. "We traveled through the night to get here and had to make an adjustment due to the weather. I'm exhausted and I can only imagine how my kids feel. "I am proud of the way my kids represented Alabama A&M University. They came and fought hard. At halftime, they (ULM) had reason to be concerned. To their credit, they came out in the second half and took advantage of some of the mistakes we made and put the game away."

Troy sets offensive records in 65-0 blowout of Alcorn Braves

TROY, AL -- Troy invited a previous national championship team back to campus Saturday and then went to work on the school's record book. The Trojans totaled a record 736 yards of total offense and tied quite a few others in Saturday's 65-0 win over Alcorn State.

The school's 1968 NAIA championship team saw its record for points in a half tied and two of its players watched a record they shared tied in Troy's home opener. "The No. 1 stat and No. 1 record is that one with three little prongs on it -- a W," Troy coach Larry Blakeney said. "All the others don't make much difference." Sherrod Martin tied a school record with three interceptions, tying the record first set by Tyrone Ferguson and first tied by Ronnie Shelley in 1968. All of Martin's were in the second quarter.

Arkansas State smashes Texas Southern, 83-10

JONESBORO, AR – Arkansas State scored early and often in its home debut Saturday night, pounding Texas Southern 83-10 in front of a crowd of 21,741 at ASU Stadium.

Freshman tailback Derek Lawson rushed for 209 yards and a touchdown in the game, the 8th most rushing yards in ASU history. Junior tailback Reggie Arnold added 123 yards and two touchdowns and junior quarterback Corey Leonard accounted for 229 yards of total offense and threw for four touchdowns as Arkansas State finished with 670 yards of total offense in the game, the second most in school history.

“I’m proud of a lot of individuals. They all played a great game,” said ASU Head Coach Steve Roberts. “All four of the running backs that carried the ball did a tremendous job. Reggie obviously got out of the game very early, and then Derek Lawson came in and rushed for more than 200 yards. You guys got to see a little bit of Derek Lawson that we get to see every day in scout team. I am also really proud of David Johnson. He had a big night, especially early in the game.”

“Defensively, we went out and did what we needed to do and shut them down,” added Roberts. “We gave up a couple of big plays, but overall did a good job. Our football team has got to get over this win in a hurry because we have a big game next week.”

ASU got on the board with less than two minutes gone in the game with a 53-yard pass from Leonard to Johnson. Two minutes later, Leonard connected with junior tight end Trevor Gillott from 39 yards out for the 14-0 ASU lead.

A 25-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown from sophomore linebacker Javon McKinnon, a 33-yard field goal from junior Josh Arauco, and a two-yard pass from Leonard to freshman fullback Jeff Blake wrapped up a 31-0 first quarter for ASU.

Leonard and Johnson hooked up for their second touchdown pass of the night just 29 seconds into the second quarter, and Arnold scored on touchdown runs of two yards and 56 yards before Texas Southern got on the board with a 34-yard field goal from Robert Hersh to make it 52-3 at the half.

A five-yard touchdown run from Lawson, a 30-yard field goal from Arauco and an eight-yard touchdown run from senior quarterback Travis Hewitt made it 69-3 before the Tigers scored their only touchdown of the night on a 32-yard pass from quarterback Bobby Reid to wide receiver William Osbourne.

Blake added a 15-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter, and freshman linebacker Demario Davis returned a fumble 53-yards for a touchdown to set the final at 83-10 after Arauco’s 11th extra point. Arauco was 11-for-11 on extra points to tie the ASU record, and 2-for-2 on field goal tries on the night.

The Red Wolves’ 83 points were the second most in school history and the most in the history of ASU Stadium. The 73-point margin of victory was the most under head coach Steve Roberts.

Arkansas State continues a three-game home stand next week when they host Southern Miss in a 6 p.m. game at ASU Stadium.

Texas Southern next game is Sept. 13 at the Capital City Classic (Sacramento, California) Hughes Stadium, against CIAA Division II foe, Shaw University (N.C.). Game time is at 2:05 pm PT. The Tigers are currently on a 15 game losing streak.
