Texas Southern/Houston Oiler legend Kenny Burrough recovering from heart attack

HOUSTON, TX -- Former Houston Oilers standout Kenny Burrough is hospitalized in Houston after suffering a heart attack. Burrough underwent triple bypass surgery at Saint Luke’s hospital after the Friday attack, according to his spokesperson. He is resting comfortably and has been moved to a private room.

Burrough, 62, was a first-round draft pick by the New Orleans Saints in 1970. He then spent 11 NFL seasons with the Oilers in Saints from 1971 to 1981. Burrough was selected to the Pro Bowl in 1975 and 1977.

The TSU graduate led all NFL wide receivers with 1,063 yards in 1975. The Jacksonville, Florida native is a member of the SWAC and TSU Halls of Fame.

Date changed for SU-Texas Southern football game

Southern’s football schedule has changed again. Texas Southern, in accepting a proposal from ESPNU, has moved its home game against the Jaguars to Dec. 5 — one week after the Bayou Classic and one week before the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship Game. The TSU game was originally scheduled for Oct. 10. Southern will have a bye that week instead.

The decision to move the game was made solely by TSU, Athletic Director Charles McClelland said.

“We got inquiries to move the game, and we were able to put it on national television,” McClelland said. “And there was financial benefit to both universities.” McClelland said both schools will receive a payout of more than $100,000, but declined to give an exact figure.

According to SU records, this would be the first time the Jaguars played a conference game between the Bayou Classic and the SWAC Championship Game, which began in 1999. In fact, this will be the Jaguars’ first regular-season game after the Bayou Classic since 1979, when they finished with back-to-back wins against Grambling and Alabama State. “I’m not pleased with it,” SU coach Pete Richardson said of the change. “I was informed that it would probably happen a few days ago. It could have an impact on the conference championship.

Houston - Texas Southern Football spring practices begin Monday, April 7th for the 2008 season under the leadership of new Head Coach Johnnie Cole. The team will go through drills and conditioning five days a week through April 25th.

The practices will be held at TSU’s Alexander Durley field from 3:30 pm – 6:00 pm Monday thru Friday and the public is welcomed. The spring game is scheduled for April 26, 2008 at 3:30 pm at Texas Southern.

The Houston native was the Houston Touchdown Club’s Offensive Player of the Year and all-Greater Houston, all-District and the district MVP his senior year at North Shore high school. Reid led his team to the 2003 State Class 5A Championship in an undefeated season. He was named to both the national and Texas top 100 recruiting lists.

Johnnie Cole signs 27 recruits for Texas Southern

Texas Southern coach Johnnie Cole signed a group of 27. Seven members of the Tigers' class came from Mitchell High School in Memphis, Tenn., including quarterback Kenyan Torry, who accounted for nearly 4,000 yards and 32 touchdowns last season.

TSU also addressed its needs at receiver and in the secondary, bringing in three wideouts and five defensive backs. Perhaps the biggest defensive pickup was defensive back Kydarian Wilkins of Dallas South Oak Cliff. Wilkins fell off many recruiting charts because of his 5-8, 165-pound size but is a potential shutdown corner. "Our coaching staff did a great job," Cole said. "We came in behind the eight-ball, but they hit the ground running. We wanted to build a foundation of Texas kids."
