UMES Lady Hawks crush Norfolk State 84-65

NORFOLK, Va. - It started nine games ago. The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) went on a seven game winning streak in conference play before they dropped their last two contests. That streak began with a win over Norfolk State University (NSU) and the Lady Hawks hope the streak begins anew as they toppled that same Spartan team 84-65 Monday night on the campus of NSU.

April McBride, Tiffany Reid and Queenique Tyler all posted 16 points in the game. For Tyler it is a new career high while fellow freshmen Casey Morton added 15 points. Both McBride and Reid had a double double as they grabbed 13 and 10 rebounds respectively.

With the win, UMES improves to 8-4 in league play and stands third in the MEAC tied with Morgan State and Delaware State, both of whom UMES has defeated this season.

Maryland-Eastern Shore stuns Hampton Pirates

Tyson makes a splash on ESPNU as Hawks topple Pirates for first time in eight seasons.

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Ed Tyson put on a show for a national television audience and the rest of the Hawks stepped up to play solid defense as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) toppled Hampton University 68-62 in what is arguably the biggest upset in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) this season. Tyson poured in 24 points while the under-sized and under-manned Hawks played with heart and out-rebounded the Pirates 41-24.

Fresh off a win over Howard, the Hawks played with confidence in front of a crowd of almost 3,000 fans. They slowed down a Pirates team that likes to run and forced their own pace, forcing Hampton into long range shots and jumpers and then capturing the rebound, limiting second chance points.

JONESBORO, Ark. - Jessica Worsley averaged an amazing 212.2 pins over 10 games and was named to the All-Tournament Team of the NCAA Mid-Winter Classic as third ranked (#3) University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) won the event's championship with 13,829 pins and posted a 10-4 record at the event. Worsley tallied an amazing 2,122 pins for the event while teammate Kristina Frahm was also on the All-Tournament Team with 1,833 pins over nine games for an average of 203.67. Together they paced the Lady Hawks to one of their best showings of the season.

We bowled great," said Head Coach Sharon Brummell. "Day three was a little disappointing, but overall, the team needed this. We went into an event with all five of the top teams in the nation and we came out on top. Sure, four less wins would have been great, but we knocked down more pins than anybody and showed we can bowl with anybody," she added.

UMES freshman Chena Parker has risen from the bottom of the depth chart

PRINCESS ANNE -- It's been a strange career already for Chena Parker. The University of Maryland Eastern Shore freshman center made her debut in the Hawks' season-opening game, against Morgan State. She played just five minutes, took one shot and grabbed two rebounds. In the ensuing five games, she stepped on the court in four of them, playing just five more minutes. Not a headline-making start, but she was determined to stay focused. In fact, on the UMES athletic Web site, her athletic goal for the season is to stay focused, and she feels her lack of playing time actually has helped.

"I saw early on, when she first came in for individual workouts, that she was something special," Batchelor said. "I saw some unique characteristics as far as her soft hands and her touch, but she wasn't quite ready for the defensive end, the transition, the speed of the game.

UMES basketball player is a nominee for national award

PRINCESS ANNE -- I'll take a slab of meat loaf, a side of mashed potatoes and a big glob of good news. Well, that's not quite how it happened, but it was in the cafeteria at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore where basketball player Kristi Veltkamp found out she was a nominee for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award.

"I heard about it from the lady that works in the cafeteria," Veltkamp said. "I just walked in and she said 'Congratulations,' and I was like, 'What are you talking about?' She saw it in the newspaper and showed it to me. I didn't even realize what it was at first. I was really thankful, (the coaching staff) surprised with nominating me. I'm really blessed."
