S.C. State Marching 101 performs at Indiana University
Final: Indiana 38, South Carolina State 21
BLOOMINGTON, IND. - Both quarterback Derrick Wiley and wide receiver Tyler McDonald had career games for South Carolina State.
Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, so did Indiana counterparts quarterback Edward Wright-Baker and wide receiver Duwyche Wilson. The Hoosiers' duo helped spark a passing attack which posted 300 of the team's 569 total yards in the air in Saturday's victory.
Wright-Baker finished 21-27 for 273 yards and two touchdowns, one caught by Wilson who had six receptions for 101 yards. The Hoosiers also got a career game from freshman D'Angelo Roberts who rushed for 101 yards and a score.
Indiana (1-2) led as many as 17 points, but the Bulldogs remained competitive through the entire game...

Norfolk State rectifies early miscues to win MEAC opener
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Norfolk State stopped shooting itself in the foot long enough to get its season off on the right one. The Spartans overcame a spate of mistakes during a 23-9 win Saturday at Howard in each team's MEAC opener, outscoring the Bison 13-3, and outgaining them 266-96, in the second half.
Norfolk State (2-1) fumbled five times, losing none, turned the ball over on an interception and committed 16 penalties for 142 yards, its second consecutive game with more than 100 yards in demerits.
"They played on our mistakes," said NSU linebacker Corwin Hammond. "They started to play harder when we made mistakes. When we didn't, they just kind of laid down."
That might be a little harsh - the Bison defense hung tough throughout - but as the contest wore on, it became clear Howard couldn't handle NSU without help.

HU: Defensive end's late heroics win it for ODU Monarchs
NORFOLK, VA - Looking at the 45 points Old Dominion put on the scoreboard, it would be easy for the casual observer to surmise that the offense won it for the Monarchs on Saturday night. Oh, how wrong that assessment would be.
That offense unit might as well have carried defensive end Eddie McClam off the field on its shoulders following the Monarchs' 45-42 victory over visiting Hampton at soggy Foreman Field.
The 6-foot-6, 290-pound McClam forced two fumbles in the game's last seven minutes to keep the feisty Pirates from mounding a comeback. DU was holding a precarious 38-34 lead with 6:33 remaining when McClam's heroics began.

Morgan State finally makes some big plays in 13-12 win over Robert Morris
Baltimore, MD - Morgan State safety Reshaude Miller made a play that didn't score or set up any points. But it prevented points and helped turn around Saturday's game against Robert Morris.
Miller made a leaping one-handed interception that stopped the Colonials from taking a possible 10-point lead in the first half. That seemed to awaken the sluggish Bears, and they went on to make just enough well-timed big plays to escape with a 13-12 victory over Robert Morris at Hughes Stadium.
The victory ended a six-game losing streak for Morgan State (1-2), which dropped its final four games of last season.
The Bears were looking for something to give them a lift in this game, after opening the season with lopsided losses to Towson (42-3) and Bowling Green (58-13). Big plays were missing then, but they proved helpful on Saturday.

NCCU missed extra point costly in loss
DURHAM, NC -- On his weekly radio show Tuesday, N.C. Central coach Henry Frazier III said Elon would be a barometer on where the Eagles stand as a full member of the NCAA's Div. I Football Championship Series.
Like the Eagles, the Phoenix reclassified from Division II to the FCS and have been quite successful at it. NCCU, Frazier said, is looking to get to that level. Offense finally comes to life in Indiana's football victory over South Carolina State
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana University football opponents are paying special attention to Damarlo Belcher, and with good reason: The senior from Fort Wayne, Ind., is the Big Ten's active leader in receptions and yardage.
But as South Carolina State and an announced (but early departing) crowd of 41,203 learned Saturday, Belcher isn't the lone Hoosier with good hands.
Duwyce Wilson caught six passes for 101 yards to lead nine IU players with at least one reception as a trio of quarterbacks completed 24 of 32 passes for 288 yards total. Add in 279 net yards rushing and the Hoosiers put together the type of offense that first-year coach Kevin Wilson had promoted throughout the preseason and in a pair of opening losses.
The result was a 38-21 win for the Hoosiers that, while not at all pretty, was their first under the new coaching staff.

XU Gold Nuggets beat SUNO for school-record 4th straight victory
NEW ORLEANS -- Taylor Reuther had a season-high 20 kills Saturday, and Celeste Poe had a career-best 20 digs to help Xavier University of Louisiana defeat SUNO 25-12, 22-25, 28-26, 24-26, 15-9 in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference women's volleyball at The Barn.
The Gold Nuggets (5-2, 1-0) set a school record with their fourth consecutive victory. It was the first time they beat the Lady Knights (3-3, 0-1) after going 0-4 against them a year ago.
Chinedu Echebelem had 10 kills and a season-high 17 digs for Xavier. Moira Kirk had seven kills, five digs and five blocks, and Kerris Crier had six kills, five digs and five blocks. Reuther had three aces and 13 digs.
Zipporah Washington had 16 kills and 14 digs for SUNO. Sabrina Scott had 10 kills, and Christal Hollins had nine kills and 12 digs. Shametria Gonzales had 15 digs.
Reuther had five kills in the final set, but it was an out-of-bounds SUNO attack -- one of the Lady Knights' 67 total errors -- which put Xavier ahead to stay at 4-3. Two late Reuther kills moved the Nuggets to match point, and another SUNO attack error ended the two-hour, five-minute contest.
Xavier scored 19 of the first 24 points to open the match, but SUNO evened at one set apiece after rallying from a 20-18 deficit.
Xavier saved three set points before winning the third set, but SUNO evened the match again with the help of 15 fourth-set kills, including four by Hollins.
"Our first set was phenomenal. I was so confident," Xavier coach Christabell Hamilton said. "But then we became individuals instead of staying together, so it was a long night.
"We have to continue to focus and work on being more consistent. We left the door open for SUNO, gave them a little room, and they walked right in and made it a match."
SUNO, which finished second in the 2010 GCAC Tournament and eliminated Xavier in the semifinals, dropped its second straight.
The victory was just the second for Xavier in 21 matches against in-city opponents.
Xavier, which had 46 total errors, outhit SUNO .193 to .083 and had advantages of 52-48 in kills, 9-3 in aces and 74-58 in digs.
For the first time in the program's four seasons, Xavier is 4-0 at home and three victories above .500. The Gold Nuggets will conclude a three-match home stand with a 7 p.m. Monday contest against Southern. SUNO will play host to city rival and defending GCAC Tournament champion Dillard at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
NOTES: It was the first time that Xavier won its GCAC opener . . . Xavier has two five-set victories in each of its four seasons. The other one this year was Aug. 29 at home against Mobile . . . Jacksons, Pieri, Fakler go low in Ragin' Cajuns Invitational
LAFAYETTE, La. — Xavier University of Louisiana freshman Kwame Jackson ran four miles in 21 minutes, 46.1 seconds — the second-fastest time in school history — and placed third out of 40 runners Friday evening in the Ragin' Cajuns Invitational cross country meet at Acadiana Park.
Teammate Matt Pieri was fourth in 22:04.4 with the fifth-fastest time in XU history.
Freshman Zahri Jackson, Kwame's sister, placed fifth out of 41 in the 5,000-meter race in 20:04.6, the seventh-best time in XU history. Freshman teammate Catherine Fakler was eighth in 20:20.2 with the 12th-fastest time in school history.
Xavier's women finished second, and the men placed third in team scoring. Nicholls State won the women's title, and Louisiana-Lafayette won the men's division.
Individual winners were Ingvild Vedde of Nicholls (19:12.8) in the women's race and the Ragin' Cajuns' Zachary France (21:36.4) in the men's.
It was the third competition of the season for Xavier, which will run next Saturday morning in the LSU Invitational at Baton Rouge, La.

Robert Morris To Face Morgan State Saturday
Baltimore, MD - Saturday’s game between Robert Morris and Morgan State marks the inaugural meeting between the two programs. The contest is the start of a home-and-home series between the Colonials and Bears, as Morgan State will visit Joe Walton Stadium in Moon Township, Pa., during the 2013 season. Robert Morris owns a record of 17-10-1 (.625) when facing off with an opponent for the first time, and the last time the Colonials had an inaugural matchup with a new opponent was Nov. 27, 2010, a 43-17 setback @ North Dakota State in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Playoffs.

Head Coach Joe Walton (18th Season; Pittsburgh '57) - At the forefront of the football renaissance at Robert Morris University throughout its 17-year history is Joe Walton, who has built the Colonials from a fledgling program into one of the top Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) teams in the region.
The one constant associated with the program, Walton was named the first head coach July 27, 1993. He started the program from scratch, completing everything from hiring assistant coaches to purchasing equipment to recruiting student-athletes for the team’s inaugural season in 1994. He owns an overall record of 103-72-1 (.588).
Walton’s fingerprints are all over the football program, and to prove that, RMU has played its home games since 2005 in a stadium that bears his name. During his tenure, Walton has led Robert Morris to the first Northeast Conference championship in 1996, guided RMU to a perfect 10-0 season in 2000 and in 2010 helped lead the Colonials to the NEC’s inaugural bid to the NCAA FCS Playoffs with their league-high sixth regular-season championship.
“It’s hard to believe,” Walton speaks on how fast time has elapsed. “I’ve said this many times before, and I mean it when I say that this situation is one of the best things that has ever happened to me in my life. It happened at the right time. Before this position became available, I felt I was too young to quit coaching, but I wasn’t anxious to get back into pro football. When this came along, it was the perfect fit. This situation was the perfect opportunity for me to continue to do what I like to do, and I’ve loved every minute of it.”

Head Coach Joe Walton (18th Season; Pittsburgh '57) - At the forefront of the football renaissance at Robert Morris University throughout its 17-year history is Joe Walton, who has built the Colonials from a fledgling program into one of the top Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) teams in the region.
The one constant associated with the program, Walton was named the first head coach July 27, 1993. He started the program from scratch, completing everything from hiring assistant coaches to purchasing equipment to recruiting student-athletes for the team’s inaugural season in 1994. He owns an overall record of 103-72-1 (.588).
Walton’s fingerprints are all over the football program, and to prove that, RMU has played its home games since 2005 in a stadium that bears his name. During his tenure, Walton has led Robert Morris to the first Northeast Conference championship in 1996, guided RMU to a perfect 10-0 season in 2000 and in 2010 helped lead the Colonials to the NEC’s inaugural bid to the NCAA FCS Playoffs with their league-high sixth regular-season championship.
“It’s hard to believe,” Walton speaks on how fast time has elapsed. “I’ve said this many times before, and I mean it when I say that this situation is one of the best things that has ever happened to me in my life. It happened at the right time. Before this position became available, I felt I was too young to quit coaching, but I wasn’t anxious to get back into pro football. When this came along, it was the perfect fit. This situation was the perfect opportunity for me to continue to do what I like to do, and I’ve loved every minute of it.”

ECSU Vikings wary of FSU Broncos
Fayetteville, NC - Elizabeth City State is ready to turn the corner.After two tough losses by a combined 12 points, one in overtime, the Vikings captured their first victory of 2011 last week and intend on using that as a springboard for the rest of the season. Bowie State student accused of fatally stabbing roommate
Bowie, MD - About 8 p.m. Thursday, the students in Suite 208 of the Christa McAuliffe residence hall were getting ready for what should have been a fun night out at Bowie State University’s homecoming week comedy show.Alexis Simpson, a 19-year-old newcomer to the college, abruptly turned off the iPod playing in the suite. Everyone asked her to turn the music back on. “No,” she said, according to an account in court papers.
Then the simplest of roommate spats turned deadly.
Simpson and Dominique Frazier, 18, started to yell, and the fight turned physical. Someone in the suite split them up, pushing Simpson into her bedroom. But Simpson came back with what looked like a knife and stabbed Frazier in the neck, the court papers say.

Student, 18, fatally stabbed at Bowie State; roommate charged
During what was supposed to be a festive homecoming week, the campus of Bowie State University was instead quiet and somber Friday after a student was arrested and charged with killing one of her roommates.
According to police, Alexis D. Simpson, 19, fatally stabbed 18-year-old Dominique T. Frazier on Thursday night in the dorm where they both lived. Charging documents show that the confrontation was sparked by a seemingly innocuous act: Simpson turned off Frazier's iPod as they prepared to go out, records show.
Campus police found Frazier in the second-floor hallway of the Christa McAuliffe Residential Building, where she was unconscious and bleeding from the torso. She was taken to Prince George's Hospital Center where she later died, according to Maryland State Police.
Simpson turned herself in at a Prince George's County police station around midnight. She has been charged with first-degree murder and related charges, and was being held at the Prince George's County Detention Center without bond.

JCSU looks for defensive improvement vs. Virginia State
Charlotte, NC - Johnson C. Smith scores in bunches – and so do Golden Bulls opponents. The Golden Bulls, who play CIAA North foe Virginia State Saturday at McGirt Field, have outscored 99-65 in the first two games, but are 1-1 after a 38-35 overtime loss last week against Brevard. For the second straight week, JCSU allowed more than 400 yards but that liability has been offset by an offense that’s averaging better than 536.5 per game.“I’m extremely proud of those guys because they didn’t give up,” Golden Bulls head coach Steve Aycock said. “The one thing I take from this is our kids have got to learn how to close. “We could’ve put them away in the fourth quarter and nailed the coffin shut and got out of there with a victory.”
The Golden Bulls’ main concern from the start has been defense, which was overhauled after allowing an average of 405 yards and 39 points a game last year. They’re still struggling at 452 per contest, and opponents are averaging 229.5 per game on the ground.

K-State prepares to open conference play against Stillman
Frankfort, KY - Kentucky State’s football team will put its unbeaten record on the line when it hosts Stillman College Saturday night at Alumni Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Saturday’s game will be the conference opener for both teams.Stillman comes into the game at 1-1, having won at home against Shaw 16-13 to open the season and falling to Samford 48-6 last week in Birmingham, Ala. Freshman quarterback Dondre Purnell has led the Stillman offense with his arm and his feet.
In the win against Shaw, Purnell rushed for 130 yards on 14 carries and scored one touchdown. He was 5-for-6 passing in that game.

Southern's football team bracing for a tough test in Jackson State
Baton Rouge, LA - After a 21-6 victory against Alabama A&M last weekend, Southern is preparing for the biggest home game in Coach Stump Mitchell's two seasons, as Jackson State comes to A.W. Mumford Stadium for a 6 p.m. game Saturday.

Valley Delta Devils readies for Alcorn Braves

Senior steps up to lead Stillman defense
TUSCALOOSA, Alabama - Jarell Thomas was listening when Stillman College football coach Teddy Keaton talked to his seniors about leaving a legacy. Keaton, a Stillman graduate, is in his first season as head coach. Thomas wants to go out as a winner.“I approached this season with a goal in mind,” said Thomas, an outside linebacker from Dothan. “The goal was to accomplish something that we haven’t accomplished in a while, and that’s to win over five games. During the summer workouts and all that, I just strived for the best.”
Thomas’ best was evident in the opener, when the Tigers defeated Shaw 16-13. Thomas was chosen as the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week. His contributions included 11 tackles, an interception, a forced fumble and a quarterback hurry.

FORT VALLEY, GA -- Quarterback hasn’t been a stable position at Fort Valley State since Donald Pittman took over. The FVSU head coach thought those days were over when the 2011 season beckoned, with Antonio Henton and W.J. McAllister bringing size, athleticism, strong arms and some experience to the position.
The quarterbacks showed potential in a season-opening 28-22 loss to FCS member Florida A&M, and then Henton led the Wildcats to a game-opening touchdown Saturday against 11th-ranked Delta State.
Any feeling that things might be settled were gone about 10 minutes later when Henton went down with a knee injury. He came back briefly in the third quarter and re-injured it.
McAllister knew what he was in for upon relieving Henton: the same aggressive and smothering attack that basically knocked Henton out of the game in the first place.
Now, the offense is in McAllister’s hands.

South Florida opened the season in South Bend, which is never an easy place to play. However, the crazed crowd did not influence South Florida, which earned a 23-20 victory in a game delayed a couple of time dues to weather. Usually after a win of that magnitude there is a letdown, but that was not the case for USF, which followed the win with a dominating performance against Ball State (37-7).
This should be the toughest opponent for Florida A&M this season. The Rattlers opened the 2011 campaign with a 28-22 victory over Fort Valley State, but followed that with a 23-17 setback to Hampton in the team's conference opener last week.

South Florida opened the season in South Bend, which is never an easy place to play. However, the crazed crowd did not influence South Florida, which earned a 23-20 victory in a game delayed a couple of time dues to weather. Usually after a win of that magnitude there is a letdown, but that was not the case for USF, which followed the win with a dominating performance against Ball State (37-7).
This should be the toughest opponent for Florida A&M this season. The Rattlers opened the 2011 campaign with a 28-22 victory over Fort Valley State, but followed that with a 23-17 setback to Hampton in the team's conference opener last week.

Jacksonville Jazz Musician Plays Trombone Under Overpass
Jacksonville, FL - Almost as sure a bet as the incoming tide, Joe Watts sets up at Metro Park, to breathe a little life into Jacksonville mornings.
"It's kinda my meditation, it sets up my entire day," the Jazz artist said. "Everything is awakening, there's a lot of energy in the morning."
Watts could bring his keyboard, or a trumpet. Instead, his choice of instrument to get the day started: his trombone. "You don't see that too often," he said, laughing.
His spot under the overpass has the perfect acoustics, and the perfect neighbor, for a hardcore Jags fan. EverBank Field is within earshot of where he sets up.
"Some of the guys wave as they come in while I play," he said. Watts grew up in Jacksonville, went to Ribault High, and studied music at FAMU and FSU.
