Gold Nuggets rally to defeat Rust on road
HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. — Freshman guard Nina German led a second-half rally Saturday that lifted Xavier University of Louisiana to a 57-49 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference women's basketball victory against Rust.The Gold Nuggets (12-5, 2-0) won for the seventh time in their last nine games.
German scored a career-high 13 points, four during a 12-2 run that turned XULA's 41-37 deficit into a 49-43 lead with 6:37 remaining. XULA outscored Rust 17-6 in the fourth quarter.
Joi Simmons scored 11 points for XULA and was 5-of-6 from the floor. German had five assists and a career-best eight rebounds. Nahrie Pierce grabbed a season-high nine rebounds.
Keimeshia Walker had 19 points and five steals for Rust (11-3, 0-3), which led 32-26 at halftime after outscoring the Gold Nuggets 19-10 in the second quarter.
XULA will stay on the road and travel to Little Rock, Ark., for a 5:30 p.m. GCAC game Monday against Philander Smith.

Loyd, McCoy lead Gold Rush to first GCAC win
HOLLY SPRINGS, Mississippi — William Loyd continued his hot shooting, and Khalil McCoy didn't miss a shot Saturday in Xavier University of Louisiana's 64-47 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference men's basketball victory against Rust.The Gold Rush (9-7, 1-1) snapped a two-game losing streak and won on an opponent's floor for the first time since October.
Loyd was 7-of-11 from the floor and scored a game-high 18 points. Loyd shot 71.1 percent from the floor (27-of-38) in the last five games.
McCoy scored 11 points, was 4-of-4 from the floor and had a career-high six assists.
Damani Flanagain, in his second contest with the Gold Rush, had game highs of seven assists and eight rebounds.
XULA shot a season-high 53.2 percent from the floor.
Jordan Jackson and Quentin Pough scored 10 points apiece for Rust (1-11, 0-3), a first-year GCAC member. Pough had seven assists, and Jackson had six.
After trailing 3-2, XULA outscored the Bearcats 22-4 — including three McCoy 3-pointers and two by Anfernee King — to seize control. XULA led 31-15 at halftime, and the final margin was its largest of the game.
Rust shot 32.7 percent from the floor. XULA outrebounded the Bearcats 41-19.
XULA will stay on the road and travel to Little Rock, Ark., for a 7:30 p.m. GCAC game Monday against Philander Smith.
