Loyd, McCoy lead Gold Rush to first GCAC win

Xavier University of Louisiana men's basketballHOLLY SPRINGS, Mississippi — William Loyd continued his hot shooting, and Khalil McCoy didn't miss a shot Saturday in Xavier University of Louisiana's 64-47 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference men's basketball victory against Rust.
     
The Gold Rush (9-7, 1-1) snapped a two-game losing streak and won on an opponent's floor for the first time since October.
     

Loyd was 7-of-11 from the floor and scored a game-high 18 points. Loyd shot 71.1 percent from the floor (27-of-38) in the last five games.
     

McCoy scored 11 points, was 4-of-4 from the floor and had a career-high six assists.
     

Damani Flanagain, in his second contest with the Gold Rush, had game highs of seven assists and eight rebounds.
     

XULA shot a season-high 53.2 percent from the floor.
  
Jordan Jackson and Quentin Pough scored 10 points apiece for Rust (1-11, 0-3), a first-year GCAC member. Pough had seven assists, and Jackson had six.
     

After trailing 3-2, XULA outscored the Bearcats 22-4 — including three McCoy 3-pointers and two by Anfernee King — to seize control. XULA led 31-15 at halftime, and the final margin was its largest of the game.
     

Rust shot 32.7 percent from the floor. XULA outrebounded the Bearcats 41-19.
     

XULA will stay on the road and travel to Little Rock, Ark., for a 7:30 p.m. GCAC game Monday against Philander Smith.
