Angel earns GCAC honor after another jumping victory

NEW ORLEANS — Edward Angel, Xavier University of Louisiana's All-America high jumper, has been named Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week in men's field for March 11-17 after winning that event Saturday at the Louisiana Classics meet in Lafayette, La.
     

Angel, a sophomore from Fulshear, Texas, and a graduate of Seven Lakes High School, produced a winning jump of 2.00 meters (6 feet, 6 3/4 inches). He won the event in both XULA meets this season.
     

Xavier University of Louisiana men's track and fieldLast season Angel finished fifth at the NAIA National Championships to become XULA's first All-American in men's track and field since 2004. He was a three-time GCAC Athlete of the Week in 2018.
     
Next for XULA will be the Southern Miss Invitational March 30 at Hattiesburg, Miss.

Bates, Trench are Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes

Xavier University of Louisiana women's basketballNEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's Mikayla Bates and Maya Trenchwere announced Monday as Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes in Division I women's basketball for the 2018-19 academic year.
     

Bates and Trench qualified for the honor by having a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 on a 4-point scale and reaching junior academic status.
     

Bates is a senior from Baton Rouge, La., and a graduate of University Lab School. Trench is a junior from Edgard, La., and a graduate of West St. John High School. Both are accounting majors and three-year starters who helped XULA this season win the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular-season championship, rank 24th in the final coaches poll and receive an at-large bid to the national tournament.
     

Bates is the seventh Gold Nugget to reach 600 points, 400 rebounds, 200 assists and 200 steals in a career. Trench is the sixth to reach 500 points, 300 rebounds and 300 assists in a career.
     

Bates is the second from XULA to earn this award twice in this sport. Portia Jones (2001-03) was first.
     

Bates will receive her bachelor's degree May 11 from XULA, then begin work at Northwestern Mutual, where she interned the past two summers and was selected one of the company's top 10 nationwide interns of 2017.
     

There were 148 Division I women honored as Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes. Bates and Trench were among six cited from the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference.
