Darren Rodgers to lead athletic pep band
Rodgers — a New Orleans native and a graduate of Talladega College and NOLA's St. Augustine High School — is the director of bands at the Roots of Music, a New Orleans-based, non-profit organization which empowers the youth through music education, academic support and mentorship while preserving and promoting the unique musical and cultural heritage of the city.
"The opportunity to start a pep band and help grow that program into something successful presents unique and exciting possibilities. Darren will put our pep band musicians on the map from day one."
Rodgers, whose primary instruments are euphonium and trumpet, received a bachelor of arts in music from Talladega. There he was a dean's list student, a member of the Marching Tornado Band, a student arranger and euphonium section leader. Rodgers also attended Southern University in Baton Rouge, La., where he was a Human Jukebox band member and was chosen outstanding bandsman his freshman year.
The XULA pep band will perform at home sporting events and other campus and community events.
"I'm extremely excited to have this opportunity at Xavier," Rodgers said. "I look forward to adding energy and creating a fun atmosphere at the university. The most energetic people in the room are in the band. It's like having another DJ at the game. The energy a good pep band can bring to a game is tremendous. It can amplify the atmosphere."
XULA Athletics announced March 20 the formation of its pep band, which is open to all interested XULA students. Previous experience in a high school or college band program is preferred. Students interested in joining the pep band may click here to fill out an online questionnaire.

Gold Rush fall 5-4 at NAIA No. 2 Reinhardt
CANTON, Georgia — Xavier University of Louisiana lost 5-4 Friday to unbeaten Reinhardt in a matchup of top-10 NAIA men's tennis teams. The Gold Rush (11-5) will stay on the road and play NAIA No. 13 Point at 2 p.m. Saturday in Valley, Ala.
Santiago Perez and Ghassan Alansi won in doubles and singles for XULA. Shaikh Abdullah also won in singles.
Mario Belloni Tomas and Jordi Puig won in doubles and singles for the Eagles (10-0).
"This was a great match that we were theoretically two games away from winning," XULA head coach Alan Green said. "If we get those two games it keeps the other guy on the court for a third set, and they were wearing down. But great job by those guys. (Coach) Jennifer (Pourchier) has a great team this year. She has done a great job at Reinhardt."
The Gold Rush are 0-7 in the last 10 seasons against second-ranked NAIA teams. All those matchups occurred on the road.

Rush and Nuggets defeat Warriors, both by 7-0
NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's tennis teams defeated Lewis-Clark State by 7-0 scores Thursday. The XULA men (11-4), ranked seventh in the NAIA, extended their win streak to five. The third-ranked Gold Nuggets (13-4) won for the 11th time in their last 12 dual matches.
The Gold Rush won every match but one, but it did not affect team scoring because XULA and the Warriors used NCAA Division I rules. Gabriel Niculescu and Samir Chikhaouiclinched the doubles point, rallying from a 4-3 deficit for a 6-4 victory against William Bruchard and Alexandre D'Aboville. Chikhaoui rallied in singles, too, and clinched the dual with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) victory against Luca Menezes on the third court. Chikhaoui trailed 5-2 in the second set and saved a pair of set points.
The XULA women won every set. Angela Charles-Alfred and Charlene Goreau clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 victory against Begona Andres and Alexandra Barry, then Angelica De Vincenzis clinched the dual on the third singles court with her 6-4, 6-2 decision against Laura Diaz.
LCSC's men are 3-9, and its women are 4-10. The women are ranked 23rd in the NAIA.
XULA's men will play NAIA No. 2 Reinhardt at 2 p.m. EDT Friday in Canton, Ga. The Gold Nuggets will not play again until April 6 at home against fifth-ranked William Carey.
