Wray, Williams, Buchanan repeat as GCAC honorees

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's Shalysa WrayCalah Williams and Shane Buchanan are repeat winners of Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week awards in track and field. All were honored for performances April 1-7.

All three won for the second consecutive week, with Wray winning in women's track for the third time this season and Williams winning in women's field for the third time in her career. Buchanan won in men's track.

Wray, a freshman from Waterford Portmore, Jamaica, and a graduate of St. Jago School, produced an NAIA A-qualifying time of 11.87 seconds Saturday in the 100-meter dash at the McNeese Spring Time Classic in Lake Charles, La. Wray finished second out of 18 sprinters and became the first XULA woman in three years to finish in less than 12 seconds.

Wray also anchored XULA's second A-qualifying time this season in the 400 relay. The Gold Nuggets finished second in 46.62. Wray has qualified for nationals in five events.

Williams, a sophomore from Baton Rouge, La., and a graduate of Woodlawn High School, finished ninth at McNeese in the discus (34.05 meters/111 feet, 8 1/2 inches) and 12th in the shot put (9.90 meters/32 feet, 5 3/4 inches).

Buchanan, a freshman from Kingston, Jamaica, and a graduate of Kingston College, produced his first collegiate victory when he ran XULA's fastest 5,000-meter time — 16:18.67 — in six years. He placed eighth in the 1,500 in 4:12.60.

Next for XULA will be the GCAC Championships April 17-18 at Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans.

Goreau, Chikhaoui receive GCAC weekly awards

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana tennis standouts Charlene Goreauand Samir Chikhaoui are Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Players of the Week for April 1-7.

Goreau, a senior from Toulouse, France, moved up to the first court during the weekend for her final two home matches as a Gold Nugget, and she responded with four victories in as many attempts to lead XULA to team victories against NAIA top-10s William Carey and LSU-Alexandria. Goreau's final victory of the weekend ws a 6-1, 6-4 decision against LSUA's Miljana Milojevic, a second-team All-American a year ago.

Not only did Chikhaoui, a junior from Lille, France, provide the clinching victory in a 5-4 win Saturday against No. 6 William Carey, he also became the first to beat Atikan Juprang in dual-match singles. Juprang was 15-0 over the last two seasons — 8-0 in 2019 — before losing 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 to Chikhaoui. In doubles, Chikhaoui and Pierre Andrieu won 8-4.

It also was a big week academically for Chikhaoui, who was honored at XULA's Division of Business awards banquet for the highest GPA among junior finance majors, then was named three days later a first-team Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar.

The GCAC weekly awards are the 14th for Goreau — extending her league career record in that sport — and fifth all-time for Chikhaoui.

The third-ranked Gold Nuggets (15-4) and seventh-ranked Gold Rush (13-6) are idle until April 18 when they visit Mobile, whose women are ranked 11th and men are 15th.

Nuggets, winner of 31 of last 36, hold steady at No. 3

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana women's tennis remained third Tuesday in the sixth NAIA coaches poll of the season.

The Gold Nuggets, 15-4 this season and winner of 31 of their last 36 dual matches, are No. 3 for the ninth consecutive poll. That streak began April 24, 2018. It's the Gold Nuggets' 63rd consecutive appearance in the top 25 and their 108th all-time.

XULA was 3-0, all against ranked opponents, since the previous poll March 26. The Gold Nuggets are 9-0 this season against top-25 teams.

The Gold Nuggets will not compete this week but will play three straight days on the road April 18-20 to close the regular season. Coach Alan Green said Tuesday that an April 18 match at No. 11 Mobile has been added to the schedule. Already set were matches in Pensacola, Fla., against No. 2 Keiser and West Florida, 22nd-ranked in NCAA Division II.

XULA will not play in a conference or unaffiliated group end-of-season tournament for the fifth consecutive year, but the Gold Nuggets are expected to earn an at-large bid to the NAIA National Championship tournament, which will begin May 14 in Mobile, Ala. Qualifiers will be announced April 29, and the 24-team bracket will be revealed April 30.

No. 7 Rush make 71st consecutive top-10 appearance

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana men's tennis extended its NAIA-best streak and maintained its No. 7 ranking Tuesday in the sixth coaches poll of the season.

XULA's active streak of 101 consecutive top-25 appearances is the longest in NAIA men's tennis. The streak began April 4, 2007. XULA also made its 71st consecutive top-10 appearance, extending a streak that began May 3, 2011.

The Gold Rush (13-6) were 3-2 since the previous poll, including 5-4 road losses at Reinhardt and Point — both are in the new top five — and a 5-4 home victory Saturday against William Carey, which dropped from sixth to eighth.

Point climbed from 13th to fifth. Reinhardt (12-0) remained second for the third consecutive poll. But everyone's still chasing Georgia Gwinnett (20-0), the five-time defending national champion and a unanimous No. 1 for the 43rd straight poll.

The Gold Rush will not compete this week but will play three straight days on the road April 18-20 to close the regular season. First of the three matches will be at No. 15 Mobile, followed by matches in Pensacola, Fla., against No. 6 Keiser and West Florida, 10th-ranked in NCAA Division II.

XULA will not play in a conference or unaffiliated group end-of-season tournament for the fifth consecutive year, but the Gold Rush are expected to earn an at-large bid to the NAIA National Championship tournament, which will begin May 14 in Mobile, Ala. Qualifiers will be announced April 29, and the 24-team bracket will be revealed April 30.
