Black and Torres earn GCAC weekly awards

Xavier University of Louisiana women's volleyballNEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's 2019 collection of Gulf Coast Athletic Conference weekly volleyball awards reached 12 when juniors Kayla Black and Jennifer Torres were honored for Oct. 7-13.
     
Black is GCAC Attacker of the Week for the second time this season and the ninth time in her career. Perez, in her first season at XULA, is Defender of the Week for the third time, all in the last four weeks, and the second consecutive week.
     

Black hit .271 with 48 kills, 38 digs, four aces and five blocks in three matches at the UST Invitational in Houston. Against Huston-Tillotson she tied her school record for kills in a match with 27. Black set a school record for 20-kill matches in a career — she has six.
     

Torres, from Jacksonville, Fla., had 56 digs and averaged 4.67 digs per set. She also produced six aces and seven assists. Torres had a career- and match-high 27 digs against Wiley — No. 13 on XULA's all-time match list — and a match-high 15 digs against St. Thomas (Texas). She has an active streak of six matches with double-figure digs.
     

The Gold Nuggets won Defender of the Week each of the last five weeks.
     

XULA — 20-5 overall, 9-0 in the GCAC and closing in on a ninth consecutive regular-season championship — will play GCAC home matches Saturday against SUNO at 11 a.m. and Tougaloo at 6 p.m. at the Convocation Center. There will be two additional GCAC matches at XULA that day: Dillard vs. Tougaloo at 1 p.m. and Dillard vs. SUNO at 4 p.m.

Charles-Alfred and Bashir are seeded 1st, Perez 3rd at ITA Cup

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's Angela Charles-Alfred and Lailaa Bashir have earned the No. 1 seed in the women's NAIA doubles division of the ITA Cup tennis championships at Rome, Ga.
     

XULA's Santiago Perez is seeded third in men's NAIA singles.
     

Xavier University of Louisiana men's tennisThe four-day event will begin Thursday at Rome Tennis Center at Berry College. Perez will play at 11 a.m. EDT in the opening round against Tennessee Wesleyan's Valentin Popescu. Charles-Alfred and Bashir will play at 2:45 p.m. EDT against Cardinal Stritch's Lisa Keller and Assya Trimari.
     

Weather website darksky.net predicts a temperature of 54 degrees when Perez begins his match and 65 degrees when Charles-Alfred and Bashir start theirs. Skies will be clear.
     

Charles-Alfred and Bashir earned an automatic berth in this event by winning the ITA NAIA South Regional title Sept. 22 at XULA. Perez, the men's ITA NAIA National Rookie of the Year last season, received an at-large bid.
     

Charles-Alfred and Bashir are 7-0 this fall as a doubles team. They also won the A-bracket of the HBCU National Championships in September.
