CHARLOTTE, NC – The Shaw Lady Bears virtually owned the last decade at the CIAA Tournament, winning five championships between 2003-2008. Now they are working on the next one. And it is something Johnson C. Smith knows all too well.
Tournament MVP Demaria Liles had 15 points, six rebounds and three steals as the Lady Bears captured the 2011 CIAA Championship after a 62-56 victory over the Lady Golden Bulls on Saturday evening at the Time Warner Cable Arena.
"This one is big," said Shaw coach Jacques Curtis, who has led the Lady Bears to each of their six titles in the last nine years. "And it's big because there was a lot of pressure on this team from the beginning, especially early in the season when we lost a couple of games. We knew we had to win this tournament to go on to the next level."
It is the fifth time the Lady Bears (21-11) have defeated Johnson C. Smith (23-4) in the CIAA Championship and the fourth time in the last nine years the Lady Golden Bulls, the 2009 CIAA champion, have finished as the tournament's runner-up.
"Although in defeat, we are extremely proud of our women's basketball team and what they've accomplished thus far," said Johnson C. Smith coach Vanessa Taylor, the CIAA Women's Coach of the Year. "We hope that it is enough for the NCAA to say to us that we can live to play another day."

LADY GOLDEN BULLS FALL SHORT IN A 62-56 CIAA CHAMPIONSHIP LOSS TO SHAW
CHARLOTTE, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball were seven points shy of claiming their second CIAA Tournament title in three seasons after a 62-56 loss against Shaw University in the 2011 CIAA Women's Championship game on Saturday evening inside the Time Warner Cable Arena. The Lady Golden Bulls finish the conference post season with the best overall record in the history of the women's program at 24-4; previous mark 22-5 during the 1999-00 season. Reigning CIAA Coach of the Year Vanessa Taylor also set a new career mark for most wins in an individual season; surpassing her mark of 22-5.
This is the fifth time in history the Lady Bears (21-11) have defeated Johnson C. Smith in the CIAA Championship and the fourth time in the last nine years the Lady Golden Bulls, the 2009 CIAA champion, have finished as the tournament's runner-up (1989, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2011).

The Lady Bears were down 43-37 with 10:05 remaining in the game after junior guards Terran Quattlebaum (Mitchellville, MD) and Terrica Jones (Raleigh, NC) combined for 13 points in an 18-5 run. Aslea Williams, who finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds, scored seven straight points in a span of 1:40 to spark Shaw's decisive run of the game, a 12-0 spurt that handed the Lady Bears a 51-45 edge they would never relinquish.

MEAC Announces 2011 Women's Basketball Tournament Seedings
The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announced its women's pairings for the 2011 MEAC Basketball Tournament, March 7-12 at the Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Hampton will enter the tournament as the top seed after concluding the regular-season with a 15-1 mark in MEAC play.
The Lady Pirates earned the tournament first-round bye and will open up play on Wednesday, March 9 at 12:30 p.m. They will face the winner of the South Carolina State/ Bethune-Cookman matchup slated for Tuesday, March 8 at 1:30 p.m.
Howard’s Saadia Doyle was named Player of the Year. Coppin State’s Larrisa Carter was selected the MEAC Rookie of the Year and Hampton's Quanneisha Perry earned Defensive Player of the Year honors for the second straight year. Hampton’s David Six was voted by his peers as the MEAC Coach of the Year.

2011 MEAC Men’s Basketball Championship Schedule

With the score tied at 71 with 4.9 seconds left in overtime, the 6-foot-6 senior intercepted the in-bounds pass and drove to the bucket to give Bethune-Cookman a 73-71 victory over archrival Florida A&M in the season finale Friday at Moore Gymnasium.

The Fort Valley State Lady Wildcats defeat the Benedict Lady Tigers, 74-60, at Frank L. Forbes Arena to advance to the women’s championship game.
#4 Clark Atlanta Panthers vs. #1 Benedict Tigers
The Benedict College Tigers the #1 seed in the year’s tournament clashed with #4 seed Clark-Atlanta University Panthers, in semi-final action, in the Forbes Arena. It was the Panthers (21-8) who played like they were the #1 seed, racing past the Benedict Tigers (21-7), 75-52.
#3 Miles Lady Bears vs. #7 Stillman Lady Tigers
The SIAC Women’s Basketball Championship game is set after the Miles Lady Bears defeated the Stillman College Lady Tigers, 62-44.
#2 Stillman Tigers vs. #3 Tuskegee Golden Tigers
Stillman College (22-6) earned the right to play for the SIAC men’s basketball championship, by soundly defeating the Golden Tigers of Tuskegee University (19-9) 99-81. The Tigers will play the Clark-Atlanta University Panthers, 6:00 pm tomorrow, for the SIAC Championship, in the Forbes Arena.

Day 2 Recap of the 2011 SIAC Basketball Tournament
#3 Miles Lady Bears vs. #6 Tuskegee Tigerettes
Day two of the 78th Annual Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Basketball Tournament was the start of quarterfinal action. In women’s play, the number three seed Lady Bears of Miles College began tournament play after a first round bye. In a 2 p.m. match up at Forbes Arena on the Morehouse College campus, the Lady Bears met the number six seed Tigerettes of Tuskegee University who advanced to the quarterfinals after an opening round win over Claflin University.
With Tuskegee forced to foul with 18 seconds left, two free throws by the Lady Bears sealed the Miles win and sent them into the semifinals with a 66-63 win.
#2 Stillman Tigers vs. #7 Claflin Panthers
Atlanta, Ga.—In game six of the SIAC Basketball Men’s Tournament, the no. 2 seed, Stillman Tigers defeated the no. 7 seed, Claflin University Panthers 70-58 at L.S. Epps Gymnasium on the campus of Clark Atlanta University.
With this win, Stillman improves to 21-6 overall and will advance in the tournament. Claflin falls to 12-16 and was eliminated from the tournament.

Atlanta, Ga.—In game six of the SIAC Basketball Women’s Tournament, the no. 7 seed, Stillman Lady Tigers upset the no. 2 seed, Albany State University Lady Rams 66-64 at L.S. Epps Gymnasium on the campus of Clark Atlanta University.

ATLANTA--Chris Hunt hit a layup with eight seconds remaining and Tony Baker hit two free throws to seal the victory, as the Paine College Lions won 68-65, over the LeMoyne-Owen Magicians in game one of the SIAC tournament. LeMoyne-Owen enjoyed a 32-25 half-time lead, but couldn’t hold on down the stretch, in the close game that featured six ties and seven lead changes.

The Historically Black Colleges and Universities Network ("HBCU Network") will be a stand-alone, full-time, 24/7, 365-day a year sports, edutainment and lifestyle network devoted entirely to the four HBCU Conferences (CIAA, MEAC, SIAC, SWAC) and its member and independent universities, launching Fall - 2011
The Historically Black Colleges and Universities will be equity partners in the network. Additionally, HBCUs will directly benefit financially from annual rights fees.

Citrus Bowl's new field of dreams needs a do-over
The stadium is home to the MEAC/SWAC Challenge and the Florida Classic (Bethune-Cookman University vs. Florida A&M University).
First the "mud bowl" made Orlando and its aging Citrus Bowl a national laughingstock, forcing the city to spend nearly $1 million for artificial turf. Now it turns out the AstroTurf that replaced real grass at the stadium last summer isn't level, so it has to be ripped up and redone.
Fixing the field is potentially a costly job, but taxpayers won't be on the hook. City officials say it's up to the synthetic turf's manufacturer to pick up the tab.

Orlando officials switched to AstroTurf to avoid a repeat of the December 2009 Champs Sports Bowl, which made Orlando the butt of jokes in front of a national television audience. The field's fresh sod wasn't given time to grow in, and heavy rains caused players to slip and slide on loose chunks of turf.
The city spent $975,338 to cover the field with AstroTurf GameDay 3D60X artificial turf, which workers finished installing in August.
