Bethune-Cookman search committee to look for President Trudie Kibbe Reed's replacement

DR. TRUDIE KIBBE REED
DAYTONA BEACH, Florida -- A search committee has been named to start looking for a new president for Bethune-Cookman University.

Larry Handfield, the university's board chairman, said today that he has named a committee of board members, faculty, student government association and other representatives to start looking nationally for a replacement for Trudie Kibbe Reed, who has served as president since August 2004. He said that Reed, 64, currently remains as president but will be retiring.

A transition committee of the board is working out her departure date and the transition plan. An announcement is expected in the next week. Reed is out-of-town and could not be reached for comment.

"She is still the president. More details will be made public as far as when her retirement will go into effect," he said.

New Bethune-Cookman athletic center taking shape

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida -- If you've driven past the intersection of International Speedway Boulevard and Lincoln Street recently, the three-story blue building on the corner -- now being covered in bricks -- may have caused you to do a double take. Bethune-Cookman University is convinced that same facility -- the school's new football complex -- will have a similar effect on prospective athletes.

The $4.6 million Larry R. Handfield Athletic Training Center -- which the Wildcats' football coach is calling one of the best in the nation at the Division I Football Championship Subdivision level -- is scheduled to be ready for use by mid-May, B-CU athletic director Lynn Thompson said.

"This will elevate us," Thompson said. "Recruits can see the building going up rapidly. It's an exciting time."

Head coach Brian Jenkins, who has turned around the B-CU football program in his first two years, said recruits are "nearly shocked, when they go see (the facility)." "It really puts a major impression not only on the recruits, but their families," he said.

Bethune-Cookman University's new athletic training center will house a diverse menu of sports facilities. Included will be strength and conditioning facilities, sports medicine facilities, a football coaching headquarters, and a dramatic 3-story Hall of Fame. These facilities will be located in two main buildings which are connected by a gallery of sports, celebrating achievements by the best of Bethune-Cookman’s athletes over the 100 year history of the University. The buildings will be across from the University’s main campus, and has been designed to mirror the distinctive look of the Bethune Performing Arts Theatre, in order to broadcast the presence of the University to the other side of Daytona’s most-travelled avenue. Completion is scheduled for May 2012.

The building is named in honor of Dr. Larry R. Handfield, Esq., current chairman of the B-CU Board of Trustees and the first B-CU alumnus to hold this position. He is a Miami-based attorney who is a longtime donor and supporter of B-CU and a past recipient of an honorary doctorate degree. The majority of funds for this facility were raised by B-CU alumni, who participated in a “chapter challenge” fundraising campaign organized by the University’s regional alumni chapters.

20 facts about B-CU's 20-win season

In college basketball, 20 is a magic number for victories. Reaching 20 guarantees nothing, but it always suggests success. With 20 victories, a major-college team can usually book its postseason plane tickets.

For lower-level Division I teams, 20 victories is a particularly rare feat. The North Carolinas and Kentuckys of the world fill their early schedules with the Savannah States and USC Upstates of the world to pad their records.

Teams like Bethune-Cookman have to play those "guaranteed money" games early to support their programs. But you might as well call those games "guaranteed losses."

In 31 years as a member of Division I, B-CU (20-11, 13-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) had never achieved 20 wins in a season until ...

Videographer: chesmon40; Play: Bethune-Cookman University's Alexander Starling (32) drives to the basket over Florida A&M's Yannick Crowder (42) at Bethune-Cookman  for Wildcats 20th win of season on Thursday.

B-CU goes OT for 20th

DAYTONA BEACH, FL -- Alexander Starling was getting frustrated sitting on the bench with foul trouble in the second half. He wanted to get back in the game and make a play. At the last possible moment he got his chance.

With the score tied at 71 with 4.9 seconds left in overtime, the 6-foot-6 senior intercepted the in-bounds pass and drove to the bucket to give Bethune-Cookman a 73-71 victory over archrival Florida A&M in the season finale Friday at Moore Gymnasium.

Honda Battle of the Bands 2011 Set to Rock Atlanta

More than 60,000 fans will flock through the gates of Atlanta’s Georgia Dome on January 29th, 2011 to witness the 9th annual Honda Battle of the Bands Invitational Showcase, an unparalleled performance and celebration of the nation’s elite marching bands. Renowned Hip-Hop performer and actor “Bow Wow” will join more than 1,800 student musicians and one of Atlanta’s best amateur vocalists to celebrate the music and creativity found at America’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

The Invitational Showcase Line-Up

For the highly anticipated 2011 showdown, the curtain will go up promptly at 3:00 p.m. EST. The bill includes a special guest performance by “Bow Wow,” along with crowd-pleasing routines by the nation’s top eight elite black college marching bands. Georgia’s own Albany State University will open the show and lead this year’s “great eight” performances in the following order:

1. Albany State University “Marching Rams Show Band”
2. Tennessee State University “Aristocrat of Bands”
3. Virginia State University “Trojan Explosion Marching Band”
4. Clark Atlanta University “Mighty Marching Panthers”
5. Jackson State University “The Sonic Boom of the South”
6. Winston-Salem State University “Red Sea of Sound”
7. South Carolina State University “Marching 101”
8. Bethune Cookman University “Marching Wildcats”

Grants, Internships, and More

The Honda Battle of the Bands program not only provides a platform to shine a rare spotlight on the pageantry, pride and showmanship of HBCU music and culture, but it also is the only national music scholarship program of its kind. For the 2011 program, 45 HBCU marching bands participated in the pre-qualifying “Celebration Tour,” and received $1,000 grants for their music programs. An additional $20,000 will be awarded to the eight institutions selected to participate in this month’s Invitational Showcase.

In addition to the distribution of grant monies, the program also includes internship opportunities through the Fox Music Experience, and an HBCU Recruitment Fair will expose future college students to all HBCUs have to offer. The Fox Music Experience, now in its fourth year, provides one HBOB Invitational Showcase student-musician the opportunity to spend a few weeks during the summer months as an intern at Twentieth Century Fox studios in Los Angeles, learning film and television music production first-hand. The Honda Battle of the Bands HBCU Recruitment Fair, now in its sixth year, gives young people the opportunity to meet with marching band and admissions recruiters to discuss admissions requirements and scholarship opportunities.

Group and individual tickets for the show are still available, but moving quickly. They can be purchased at the Georgia Dome Box Office, via www.Ticketmaster.com or www.HondaBattleoftheBands.com for just $10 and $12.

For more information on the Invitational Showcase, Fox Music Experience summer internship program and HBCU Recruitment Fair, photos, press materials and video footage visit www.HondaBattleoftheBands.com, the official online destination and clearinghouse for all HBOB information.

Hip-Hop Icon “Bow Wow” to Perform

Hip-Hop artist and actor “Bow Wow” will be on hand as the special guest performer this year. The Columbus, Ohio native is best known for his musical lineage, taking his stage name from his mentor, fellow rapper-actor “Snoop Dog,” Bow Wow’s film credits include The Fast & the Furious: Tokyo Drift and Lottery Ticket. He is also noted for his cameo appearances in the critically-acclaimed television series, “Smallville,” “Ugly Betty,” “Entourage” and others.

Amateur Vocalists Welcomed To Audition for National Anthem

The Honda Battle of the Bands national anthem will be performed by a talented local vocalist selected once through a promotional radio “sing-off.” WVEE-FM, or “V-103,” Atlanta’s top-ranked urban radio station, is partnering with the Honda Battle of the Bands once again to invite listeners 16 years of age or older to demonstrate their vocal skills for a once–in-a-lifetime opportunity to open the 2011 Honda Battle of the Bands Invitational Showcase. This year, three finalists will be selected by a panel of judges at the open audition on Saturday, January 8th, 2011 at the Mall at Stonecrest in Lithonia, Georgia. Music fans can then log on to the station's web site and vote for their favorite rendition of the national anthem. The winner will be announced on-air on January 21st, 2011, and he or she will command the spotlight to open the showcase on January 29th.
