ASU football: Hornets explore 2012 schedule options

MONTGOMERY, Alabama - Alabama State officials hope to finalize plans for the 2012 football season opener by the end of this week, discounting published reports that have the Hornets of the Southwestern Athletic Conference playing in the annual matchup against a school from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference on Labor Day weekend.

While ASU athletic director Stacy Danley has discussed the possibility of playing in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge on Sept. 2, he is leaving his options open regarding possible Division I opponents.

"I have entered into discussions with the (SWAC) office and commissioner Duer Sharp about Alabama State participating in the ... Challenge," Danley said on Friday. "However, as of today, I have not received nor signed a contract committing us to that game."

Jackson State blows out Alcorn Braves

Jackson, Mississippi -- The 2011 Capital City Classic turned out to be a completely one-sided game at Veteran’s Memorial Stadium in Jackson Saturday afternoon.

The Alcorn State Braves were on the wrong end of a record-breaking performance by Jackson State quarterback Casey Therriault. Therriault threw for 539 yards and four touchdowns en route to breaking the single-season record for passing yards and total yards at Jackson State. The explosive Tigers’ passing attack and a suffocating defense led to a 51-7 victory over Alcorn State.

“Therriault went to work tonight,” Alcorn State head coach Melvin Spears said. “This is an outstanding team, one of the best in the nation, and we have nothing to hang our heads about.”

Jackson State (9-2, 7-2) ended the game with 687 yards of total offense to Alcorn’s 209.

Counting Ws and Ls, Braves' Spears is 'in the red'

Following Alcorn State's lopsided 51-7 loss to rival Jackson State on Saturday, Braves coach Melvin Spears didn't take long to answer the question.

"Do you think you'll be back as Alcorn's coach next season?" "Absolutely," said the first-year coach.

Alcorn President Christopher Brown, who said earlier in the week that it was a "50/50" chance Spears would return, didn't sound quite so certain.

"It's too early to say," said Brown. "I'm shocked by the score. But you don't just want to judge a coach just by wins and losses. We will look at the players grades' and look at the revenue for the season. This game definitely helps because Jackson State brought in a big crowd and we share revenue on this one, so that's good. But we had two poor performance games and two poor attendance games this year, so that's going to hurt the bottom line. I have to make sure he's in the black. Wins and losses, he's in the red. You can't change that."

SWAC: Hunt for hidden gems

Coast football players fall under the recruiting radar each year. The three in-state SWAC schools -- Alcorn State, Jackson State and Mississippi Valley State -- all plan to find a few hidden gems. SWAC programs usually don’t start recruiting until the first week of December to better utilize their resources in these tough economic times.

“The SWAC programs are going to really get active now that the seasons are over,” Steve Robertson of Scout.com said. “They don’t have the budgets the bigger schools do, so they don’t have a lot of on campus events like summer camps to evaluate a lot of talent. They have to depend on good old-fashion road work and film study.

Recruiting season hits full gear for Alcorn State

LORMAN — Alcorn State’s 2010 season might have ended last on Nov. 20 with a 27-14 loss to Jackson State in the Capital City Classic. But the Braves’ second season is still in full swing. Now that the season is over, Alcorn State coaches are canvassing the state and country trying to find athletes that will keep the Braves’ program heading in the right direction.

In the last three years, Alcorn has improved its record from 2-10 to 3-6 to 5-6. And head coach Earnest Collins said getting quality recruits is critical to continuing the upward trend of the program.

The NFL "After Draft:" Free Agent Signings

South Carolina State University Wide Receiver (#3) Oliver Tre' Young signs free agent contract with the Carolina Panthers.

Cardinals sign SU's Stewart

Passed over during the NFL draft, Southern wide receiver Juamorris Stewart doesn’t have to wonder if he’d have a shot at the pros. Saturday night, Stewart said he has agreed to sign a free-agent deal with the Arizona Cardinals. Even as the seventh and final round plodded along Saturday, several teams started calling Stewart to offer free-agent deals. “I talked to a bunch of teams, but they have a young group and (the Cardinals) like throwing the ball,” Stewart said. “I’m just hoping I can come in and show what I can do. I’m happy and very excited.” Stewart said he and his agent, Tyron Collins, haven’t yet worked out the details with Arizona, but Stewart said he believes he’ll get a two- or three-year deal. The Cardinals’ rookie minicamp begins Thursday, he said, so he needs to be in Phoenix before then.

FAMU's Vann, Okeafor set to join NFL teams

Florida A&M record-setting return specialist LeRoy Vann got a lot of telephone calls during the past three days. Most of them were from folks wishing him well in the NFL Draft. Some even told him his height — 5-foot-8 — would be the thing that kept him out of the draft Saturday evening. The San Francisco 49ers decided to look past what Vann might lack in height and signed him to a free-agent contract.

The post-draft news also was good for offensive lineman Robert Okeafor, who was invited Saturday afternoon to attend the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' minicamp next week. The two former Rattlers become the first FAMU players to be in the NFL conversation since quarterback Quinn Gray 10 years ago. Vann said he will also report to the 49ers' minicamp Thursday.

Ex-Burke star Tre'Young signs with Panthers ...

South Carolina State receiver Oliver 'Tre' Young and safety Rafael Bush did not have long to dwell on the disappointment of not hearing their names called during the NFL draft. Just over an hour following the selection of the final draft pick, the two were in the process of finalizing free agent contracts with opposing NFC South teams. The Charleston native Young inked a deal with the Carolina Panthers, while Bush will compete for a roster spot with the Atlanta Falcons.

"My agent felt that the Panthers were the best place to go, somewhere where I could possibly make the ball club," Young said. Earlier in the day, the only S.C. State player to get drafted was defensive back Phillip Adams, who was taken by the San Francisco 49'ers in the seventh round.

Alcorn State University Braves QB Timothy Buckley (#7) inked a free agent contract with the Atlanta Falcons. He will play at WR for the Falcons.

2010 Free Agent Signings

Rafael Bush, DB, South Carolina State, Atlanta Falcons
Will Croner, DE, Howard University, Buffalo Bills
Chris Bell, WR, Norfolk State, New Orleans Saints
Marcell Young, CB, Jackson State, New Orleans Saints
Juamorris Steward, WR, Southern U., Arizona Cardinals
Terrell Whitehead, S, Norfolk State, Jacksonville Jaguars
Leroy Vann, KR, FAMU, San Francisco 49'ers

S.C. They were ranked as high as 12th in FCS Coaches Poll and 13th in both the Sports Network and Any Given Saturday.com season-ending poll. The AGS Web site ranked the Bulldogs 17th in its sixth annual preseason poll, the highest showing for any historically black college and university.

Gamezone: S.C. State creates paid area for tailgating: Bulldog football fans are going to need a ticket if they want to get close to Oliver C. Dawson Stadium on game days this fall. South Carolina State University is implementing a policy establishing a “Gamezone” surrounding the stadium where patrons will have to pay for parking and must have a ticket to gain entry. President Dr. George Cooper said the zone will generate revenue for the university during tight financial times. In addition, he believes it will cut down on loitering and get more fans into the stands. Board Chairman Lumus Byrd said more fans need to go inside the stadium, which has the capacity to hold 24,500 people, instead of tailgating. “The program is well funded but poorly supported. We have to start running this like a business,” he said.

A fenced-in perimeter will be placed around the zone. It will extend from the Chestnut Street side of campus to the end of Mitchell and Felton Fields.Five kiosks are going to be outside of the zone where tickets can be purchased. Special parking passes for the zone must be purchased in advance. Cars entering from Russell and Magnolia streets will be charged $5 to park on campus.

Also slated for induction is basketball star Aldwin Ware (1984-88), a Black College All-American in 1988, who led NCAA Division I in steals with 142, helping lead the Rattlers to a 22-8 finish and a berth in the finals of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament.

FAMU finds its punter in a waiter: Just a few months ago, Branden Holdren was serving meals to customers at a Jacksonville restaurant. In two months, he's expected to be kicking punts on special teams for FAMU's football team. Holdren can thank his former Jacksonville First Coast High School teammate Trevor Platt for making the pitch that gives him the chance he didn't get coming out of high school last year. Holdren is getting the shot at becoming the Rattlers starting punter after Troy Walker, who had an impressive spring, became academically ineligible. Up to then, he had the job locked down following Will Platt's unexpected withdrawal from classes. Holdren, 6-foot-2, 210, is expected to report to preseason camp on Aug. 10 for the opening of two-a-days drills.

Practice field renovation now under way at ASU: Alabama State University has started work to replace the sod on its football practice field with artificial turf, the first phase of a planned $7 million renovation of the football complex. The $600,000 practice field project should be completed by the end of July. “This is a great improvement over the existing grass field because the synthetic field material will allow the team to practice year round, and is identical to the type of surface our team plays on throughout the Southwestern Athletic Conference,” said Kippy Tate, ASU’s vice president for buildings and grounds. Tate and ASU President William Harris were present Friday morning as a fleet of earth-moving equipment converged on ASU to scoop up all the old sod and dirt in preparation for the installation of the new synthetic field material.

Tennessee State University
John Jones, a linebacker who played the past two seasons at Florida, is transferring to Tennessee State. The 6-foot-2, 219-pound Sarasota, Fla., native played in 11 games last season and recorded 18 tackles, including a career-high seven against The Citadel. He had four tackles against South Carolina. As a freshman, Jones played in nine games, though most of his action came on special teams. Jones said he was seeking the opportunity for more playing time and consulted with his friend Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie about playing at TSU. Rodgers-Cromartie is a former TSU cornerback who also is from Sarasota (Booker High School) and a NFL 1st round draft choice. As a high school senior, Jones was rated eighth nationally among middle linebackers by Scout.com and 26th by Rivals.com. He also started at wide receiver in high school. Along with Florida, Jones was recruited by Auburn, Georgia, LSU and Michigan.

Alcorn State University

Time Out: SWAC teams get most out of schedule

Once again, in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, seven means seven, for sure, but not necessarily just seven. The 10-team Southwestern Athletic Conference is returning to its seven-game format this season — going away from making teams play all nine conference teams.

Seven games — with four against teams in one’s own division and three against the five teams from the opposite division — will be used to determine a team’s run at the division title. However, teams are allowed to schedule conference opponents as non-conference games.

Grambling, Alcorn State and Mississippi Valley State will play a full nine games against SWAC opponents, with just seven of those counting toward conference standings. Southern, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Jackson State and Prairie View will play eight. Alabama A&M, Alabama State and Texas Southern play just the seven required.
