ITTA BENA, Mississippi - The Delta Devils built a 12-2 lead and then held on to snap their 19-game losing streak and hand Karl Morgan his first victory during his second season as the MVSU coach.
A stout defense and effective special teams sparked the Delta Devils, who won despite gaining just 101 total yards.
With the scored tied 2-2, Garrick Jones capped off a five-play, 36-yard drive with a 12-yard touchdown pass to J.J. Thurman to give Valley (1-8, 1-7 Southwestern Athletic Conference) a 9-2 lead at halftime.
Carlos Sanchez added a 25-yard field goal late in the third quarter to extend the Delta Devils' lead to 12-2.

SWAC: Hunt for hidden gems
Coast football players fall under the recruiting radar each year. The three in-state SWAC schools -- Alcorn State, Jackson State and Mississippi Valley State -- all plan to find a few hidden gems. SWAC programs usually don’t start recruiting until the first week of December to better utilize their resources in these tough economic times.
“The SWAC programs are going to really get active now that the seasons are over,” Steve Robertson of Scout.com said. “They don’t have the budgets the bigger schools do, so they don’t have a lot of on campus events like summer camps to evaluate a lot of talent. They have to depend on good old-fashion road work and film study.
Recruiting season hits full gear for Alcorn State
LORMAN — Alcorn State’s 2010 season might have ended last on Nov. 20 with a 27-14 loss to Jackson State in the Capital City Classic. But the Braves’ second season is still in full swing. Now that the season is over, Alcorn State coaches are canvassing the state and country trying to find athletes that will keep the Braves’ program heading in the right direction.
In the last three years, Alcorn has improved its record from 2-10 to 3-6 to 5-6. And head coach Earnest Collins said getting quality recruits is critical to continuing the upward trend of the program.

New FCS head coaches ready for debuts
Mississippi Valley State University Delta Devils' Coach Karl Morgan makes debut in Montgomery at Alabama State University Hornets on Saturday.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Seventeen of the 19 new head coaches at FCS schools will make their debuts during the first week of games, including two facing off against each other on the first night of action Thursday.
Dale Carlson will make his debut for Valparaiso on Thursday at Western Illinois, where Mark Hendrickson has taken over. Hendrickson was the Leathernecks' offensive coordinator the last 11 seasons and went 5-10 as acting coach over parts of the past two seasons.
Both programs were 1-10 last season and have never met before.
On Saturday, another pair of first-year head coaches will square off. Julius Dixon, the interim coach at Savannah State, will take his squad to Georgia Southern, where former assistant coach Jeff Monken has returned to try to get the six-time national champion Eagles back to prominence.

Alcorn State Claims 2010 SWAC Softball Championship Title
The (Alcorn State University) Lady Braves started the day with an 11-2 rout over Grambling State to secure a place in the championship game against the six-time defending champion (Mississippi Valley State University) Devilettes. In the first inning of the title game, MVSU’s first two batters, Ashley Hobbs and Angelica Wade hoisted home runs out of the park, giving Alcorn State an early 0-2 deficit. However, the Lady Braves answered back at the top of second with a Jennie Hatch homer that drove home two runs. The game would remain knotted at two all for the next five innings.
After a brief rain delay at the top of the eighth inning, Alcorn State returned from the hiatus re-energized as the Lady Braves rattled off three hits while scoring four runs to take the 6-2 lead. The Devilettes looked poised for a scoring surge of their own after an Angelia Jones homer at the bottom of the eighth. However, MVSU wasn’t able to score again, halting a six-year conference championship win streak. Alcorn State was led by Rachel Morris who was 2-for-4 in the game while Haleigh Eubanks led the way for the Devilettes, going 3-for-4.
This is Alcorn State’s first conference championship since 1997, when they were co-champions with Grambling State. With the win, the Lady Braves are automatic qualifiers for the NCAA regional tournament. The softball selection show is set for Sunday, May 16 at 9 p.m. (CT) on ESPNU.

Time Out: SWAC teams get most out of schedule
Once again, in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, seven means seven, for sure, but not necessarily just seven. The 10-team Southwestern Athletic Conference is returning to its seven-game format this season — going away from making teams play all nine conference teams.
Seven games — with four against teams in one’s own division and three against the five teams from the opposite division — will be used to determine a team’s run at the division title. However, teams are allowed to schedule conference opponents as non-conference games.
Grambling, Alcorn State and Mississippi Valley State will play a full nine games against SWAC opponents, with just seven of those counting toward conference standings. Southern, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Jackson State and Prairie View will play eight. Alabama A&M, Alabama State and Texas Southern play just the seven required.

Alabama A&M notebook
Reggie Benson, Huntsville Times
A&M offense on hold early
Alabama A&M's offense, which had scored 28 points in the first quarter in its first two games, failed to score in the opening 15 minutes Saturday night against Mississippi Valley State.
On A&M's first offensive play from scrimmage, quarterback Kelcy Luke was picked off by Sam Irons. The Bulldogs were forced to punt on their next three possessions despite good field position.
The Bulldogs put together two drives in the second quarter as Luke found tight end Charles Moody with a 7-yard touchdown pass to cap a six-play, 39-yard drive with 9:12 left in the half. Jeremy Licea kicked a 25-yard field goal to cap a 12-play, 55-yard drive to give A&M a 10-0 lead with 2:29 before intermission.
A&M, who entered the game averaging 45 points and 529 yards per game, had only 166 yards at halftime.
Luke returns to earth
Luke, who was named Southwestern Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week after completing 21-of-32 passes for 301 yards and four touchdowns last week in a 41-10 victory over Clark Atlanta, struggled in the first half against Mississippi Valley State.
Luke completed just 8-of-18 passes for 56 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He entered the game having completed 64 percent of his passes for 562 yards, seven touchdowns and just one interception.
Nice timing
Inside linebacker Jimmy Richardson, who lost his starting job to former Johnson High star Carlton Rice, picked a good time to come up with his first career interception.
With the game scoreless early in the second quarter, Richardson picked off a Semaj Williams pass to give the Bulldogs a first down at the MVSU 39.
Six plays later, Luke found Moody for the touchdown.
Moving the chains
With Alabama A&M's offense struggling early in the second quarter, Moody took matters into his own hands Saturday night against Mississippi Valley State.
Facing a fourth-and-four at the Delta Devils' 33-yard line, Luke found Moody, but he was short of the first down. The 6-foot, 249-pound Moody refused to go down, dragging a number of tacklers 6 yards to pick up the first down.
Traylor stuck in neutral
Defensive end Chris Traylor, who has more sacks than anybody in the Southwestern Athletic Conference over the last three seasons, had been held in check through Alabama A&M's first two games.
Traylor was shut out in the season opener against Tennessee State and managed just one last week against lowly Clark Atlanta.
Saturday night against Mississippi Valley State, Traylor had two in the first half and also forced a fumble.
Moland makes presence felt
Entering Saturday's game against Mississippi Valley State, Alabama A&M inside linebacker Avery Moland hadn't done much this season.
He had been credited with only nine tackles through the Bulldogs' first two games.
But he more than made up for it against the Delta Devils. Moland had seven tackles in the first half, including five solos and 2.5 tackles for loss. He also had one sack and recovered a fumble.
Commish in attendance
Duer Sharp, the interim commissioner of the Southwestern Athletic Conference, attended Saturday night's Alabama A&M-Mississippi Valley State game.
Sharp, who took over June 15 when Robert Vowels left to take a job with the NCAA, was in Jackson, Miss., Thursday night to watch the Jackson State-Texas Southern game. He was in Montgomery on Friday watching the Alabama State Invitational volleyball tournament and came to Huntsville on Saturday. Sharp was heading to Indianapolis this morning to attend a two-day NCAA conference.
"We just want the student-athletes and coaches to know we're interested in what they're doing," Sharp said.
It was the second time in two weeks that Sharp has been at A&M.
He watched A&M's football team practice on Sept. 4 and stayed around to watch the Bulldogs' first volleyball match under new coach Nedra Brown that night.
"You just want them to know that you're out and if there's an issue we're here to talk about it and we can get it resolved," Sharp said.
Defensive changes
Alabama A&M's starting defense underwent some changes for the third straight week.
Left defensive tackle Renaldo Askew, who started the season opener against Tennessee State before losing his job to David Winston last week against Clark Atlanta, returned to the starting lineup against Mississippi Valley State.
Askew was not credited with a tackle against TSU, while Winston was credited with one stop. Askew had two tackles, including one tackle for loss and a sack against Clark Atlanta, while Winston didn't record a tackle.
Right cornerback Maurice Thomas started for the second week in a row after regular starter Frank Moore was out of the starting lineup for the second straight week after violating team rules.
