JSU Lady Tigers Tabbed to Face No. 2 Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- After advancing to the final round of the 2014 Southwestern Athletic Conference, Jackson State University received an automatic bid to face No. 2 Alabama in the first round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament by default. The 2014 SWAC Women's Tennis Champions, Southern University could not participate in the tournament due to ineligibility.

JSU (10-17) is making its first trip to the NCAA tournament since 2009 and will face UA for the first time in program history. The Lady Tigers are the automatic qualifier out of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. JSU will head into the tournament first in SWAC play with an 8-1 record.

Alabama, hosting for the third-straight year and third overall, will take on the Lady Tigers in its first-round match up on Friday, May 9, at 4 p.m. CT. That match will be preceded by the Arizona State/Princeton match that is set to begin at 1 p.m. CT. The winners of both matches will then meet in the second round on Saturday, May 10, at 1 p.m. CT.

LSU rallies to defeat Alcorn State

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana – A two-out, three-run home run by junior Conner Hale in the bottom of the eighth inning elevated sixth-ranked LSU (34-11-1) to a 9-7 win over Alcorn State (8-37) Tuesday night at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field.

The Tigers travel to College Station, Texas to face Texas A&M beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m. All three games of the series will be televised. Game 1 will be on CBS Sports Network, Game 2 will be on ESPN2 at 12 p.m., and Game 3 will be on ESPNU at 1 p.m.

LSU, which faced deficits of 5-0 and 6-1 during Tuesday’s game versus Alcorn State, recorded its biggest comeback victory since April 7, 2012, when the Tigers also erased a five-run deficit at Florida.

“Let me say first of all that Alcorn State played a tremendous game; we couldn’t get their hitters out and they made some unbelievable defensive plays,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. "(Alcorn State) Coach (Barret) Rey and his players deserve a lot of credit because they played their hearts out, and the played extremely well."

Anderson retains Fuller on Mizzou staff

COLUMBIA, Missouri  --  New Missouri basketball coach Kim Anderson has already lured in his first big recruit. Tim Fuller, Mizzou’s associate head coach the last three seasons and the program’s top recruiter, has agreed to work on Anderson’s staff.

"I'd like to welcome Tim Fuller as the first member of our coaching staff here at Missouri and applaud how he led this program and kept Mizzou moving forward through practices and recruiting over the last couple weeks," Anderson said in a prepared statement. "Tim has displayed incredible character and loyalty to Mizzou during the transition and demonstrated from our first meeting his commitment and passion for our student-athletes and Mizzou Basketball. I look forward to working closely with Tim as we move our program forward and am excited about the future of Tiger Basketball."

Fuller was a candidate for the head coaching job at Florida A&M and had several recent discussions with FAMU athletics director Kellen Winslow, the former Mizzou star tight end.

Lawmakers find compromise on FAMU-FSU engineering school

TALLAHASSEE, Florida --  The biggest budget controversy in higher education this session was the Senate's proposed split of the engineering school shared by Florida A&M University and Florida State University.

The House refused to approve $13 million for a separate engineering school at FSU, which Sen. John Thrasher successfully inserted into the budget.

The compromise approved this week is being applauded by the FAMU community: $500,000 for an independent study of the program and agreeing that the Board of Governors, not the Legislature, will have the final say on any changes.

The board will have the option of keeping the status quo or creating engineering programs at each school.

Alabama State enter NCAA Women’s Golf Regionals

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana --  After winning a consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference women's golf title, Alabama State University will make its third postseason appearance in four seasons.

The Lady Hornets are included in a field of 378 participants after the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Committee announced the teams and individuals selected to participate in the 2014 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Regionals.

ASU will play in the East regional will be played at SouthWood Golf Club in Tallahassee, Florida and will be hosted by Florida State from May 8-10. Conference automatic qualifiers are indicated in parenthesis next to the institution. The Lady Hornets set a scoring record on the course earlier this year.

 

Three regional tournaments will be conducted May 8-10 to determine the championships field. Regional tournaments are considered preliminary rounds of NCAA championships competition, and all national championships policies apply.

More than 350 participants have been selected for regional competition. Among these players, 126 will advance to the championships finals. Eight teams and two individuals will advance from each regional.

The championships finals will be held May 20-23 at Tulsa Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma and will be co-hosted by Tulsa and the Tulsa Sports Commission.

TSU's Edwards, Murphy Named to NFF Hampshire Honor Society

NASHVILLE, Tennessee   -- Tennessee State lineman Kadeem Edwards and Michael Murphy were named to the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) 2014 Hampshire Honor Society, which is comprised of college football players from all divisions of play who each maintained a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better throughout their college career.

A total of 838 players from 267 schools qualified for membership in the society's eighth year, setting a new record for the number of members in the history of the program, which began in 2007.

 

Edwards, who was also named First Team All-Ohio Valley Conference, started 13 games for the Tigers and blocked for Tim Broughton who rushed for 1,146 yards (25th-most nationally) and six touchdowns. The senior protected a quarterback duo that combined for 26 passes touchdowns and only four interceptions.

 

Murphy appeared in all 14 contests for TSU last season, notching 21 tackles – 3.5 for loss. The senior also forced and recovered a fumble while playing a pivotal role in the nation’s sixth-best defense.

 

"We continue to raise the bar each year for the number of student-athletes who qualify for membership in the Hampshire Honor Society," said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell. "The Hampshire Honor Society plays an important role in highlighting that college football players clearly play a leadership role in the classroom as well as on the playing field. We congratulate each of these young men for their commitment to excellence."

 

The NFF Hampshire Honor Society capitalizes on the NFF's current National Scholar-Athlete program greatly expanding the number of scholar-athletes the NFF can recognize each year. The program further strengthens the organization's leadership role in encouraging academic performance by the student-athletes who play football at the more than 700 college and universities with football programs nationwide.

Back on top: Xavier Gold Nuggets No. 1 in NAIA coaches poll

The Gold Nuggets earn their fourth all-time No. 1 ranking and first of 2014
after receiving 12 first-place votes and 343 total points.

NEW ORLEANS -- For the second consecutive season, Xavier University of Louisiana has ascended to No. 1 in the NAIA Women's Tennis Coaches' Top 25 Poll.

The Gold Nuggets (15-6) collected 12-of-13 first-place votes Tuesday and swapped places with Georgia Gwinnett, which dropped to second. Xavier defeated Georgia Gwinnett 5-3 on Saturday in the championship of the NAIA Unaffiliated Group 2 Tournament at XU.

On April 16, 2013, the Gold Nuggets became the first XU team in any sport to reach No. 1 in an NAIA coaches poll. They were No. 1 for three consecutive polls before losing to William Carey in the semifinals of the NAIA National Championship, then falling to No. 3 in the postseason poll.

This season the Gold Nuggets were third in the preseason, dropped to sixth in the first regular-season poll but climbed to No. 2 on March 18 after a 5-4 victory at then-No. 1 and three-time defending NAIA champion Auburn Montgomery. Xavier was No. 2 for three consecutive polls before Tuesday's announcement.

It's the Gold Nuggets' 14th consecutive top-10 appearance and their fifth consecutive appearance in the top five.

"It's nice to be No. 1," XU coach Alan Green said, "but we were in the same position last year and didn't finish on top. Our goal now is to refocus and try to come home with a national championship. We know if we don't play our best, anyone in the top five can beat us."

Xavier's next dual will start at 9 a.m. on May 14 in the second round of the national tournament at Copeland-Cox Mobile Tennis Center at Mobile, Ala. The NAIA will announce the 24-team field May 5, and pairings will be revealed May 6.

Benedict To Host South Carolina State In 2014 Season Opener

COLUMBIA, South Carolina  -- Benedict College will host South Carolina State University at Charlie W. Johnson Stadium in their football rivalry on August 30, Benedict Athletic Director Willie Washington announced Tuesday.

Benedict received confirmation from the NCAA granting a waiver to allow the Tigers to open the 2014 season on Aug. 30, five days prior to the official start of competition for Division II schools.

The two football-playing HBCU colleges in South Carolina played last year in the University of South Carolina's Williams-Brice Stadium before an announced crowd of 15,037.

Benedict and S.C. State last met in Charlie W. Johnson Stadium in 2010 before an overflow crowd of 13,349.

Benedict and South Carolina State have met 52 times since their first meeting in 1927. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series 27-10-15. Benedict's last win in the series came in 1961, a 6-0 victory.

XU Gold Rush climb one place to No. 9 in NAIA poll

NEW ORLEANS -- Xavier University of Louisiana moved from 10th to ninth Tuesday in the NAIA Men's Tennis Coaches' Top 25 Poll and extended its streak of top-10 appearances.

It's the 27th consecutive time that the Gold Rush (11-11) have been in the top 10 and the 30th time in the last 31 polls. The XU men have 57 consecutive top-25 appearances dating to April 4, 2007.

Xavier lost 5-1 Saturday at home to third-ranked Georgia Gwinnett in the championship of the NAIA Unaffiliated Group 2 Tournament. Gold Rush highlights since the previous poll include a 5-4 victory against the University of New Orleans -- the third straight year that the Rush beat the Privateers -- and a 5-0 decision over No. 25 Oklahoma Baptist in the semifinals of the unaffiliated group tournament.

The Gold Rush hope to receive an at-large bid to the NAIA National Championship, which will begin May 13 in Mobile, Ala. The 24-team men's field will be announced May 5, with pairings to be revealed the following day.

Defending champion Embry-Riddle (Fla.) is No. 1 for the seventh time in as many polls this season.

MVSU baseball signs Juan Casanova and Renny Tolentino

ITTA BENA, Mississippi  --  Mississippi Valley State head baseball coach Doug Shanks has announced the signing of Homestead High School's Juan Casanova.

The 5-foot-7, 175-pound outfielder finished the 2014 season with a .370 batting average and 10 RBIs for the Broncos. Casanova also spent time as a pitcher. Last season, he went 4-3 with a 3.89 ERA in 36 innings pitched. Over the last two seasons, he successfully stole base 22 out of 25 attempts. As a junior, Casanova was selected to the Miami-Dade County All-District Team as a utility player.  To see Casanova's full statistics, click here.

He becomes to second signee from Florida for the Delta Devils.

Earlier, MVSU signed Renny Tolentino from St. Brendan Catholic High School (Miami, Fla.), a pitcher.   He will join the Delta Devils next season.

Tolentino recently led Mater Academy East to the Regional Semifinals and was named Second Team All-County and District Player of the Year. The senior pitcher hit .532 and posted a 5-1 record with 30 strikeouts and 1.15 ERA on the mound for the Class 2A Scorpions last season.

Alabama State ideal spot for Montgomery native Whitlow

MONTGOMERY, Alabama -- Jalen Whitlow wants to continue his college career as a quarterback, not a receiver.

What better place to do so than at his hometown school -- Alabama State.

Coming out of spring practice, the Hornets still weren't settled at quarterback. Daniel Duhart threw for 1,903 yards, 18 touchdowns and just eight interceptions as a starter last season. Solid numbers, but should have posted even better numbers because he had 1,000-yard rusher in the backfield in Isaiah Crowell.

Quinteris Toppings saw action last season as true freshman as he threw for 157 yards, a touchdown and interception in a high-scoring 48-42 win against Prairie View.

Nedra Brown decides to step out of the coaching realm

NORMAL, Alabama - Alabama A&M volleyball coach Nedra Brown has resigned as the head coach.

She has decided to move out of coaching and accepted the Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations/Senior Women's Administrator position at Jackson State University.

"We would like to thank coach Brown for all of her years of service and we wish her much success in the future," said Director of Athletics Bryan Hicks.

Brown's record over seven seasons was 106-110 and 44-12 in SWAC play. A&M finished the 2013 season 11-21 overall and 5-3 in the Eastern Division.

"I've been looking forward for this opportunity for the last three years and this is something I have always wanted to do," said Brown.

"I would like to thank Betty Austin for giving me the opportunity that allowed me to win the four championships, be in seven tournament championship contests and working with the student-athletes. You can't ask for anything better."

"I would also like thank everyone that had an impact on me while I was at Alabama A&M and I want to thank my family, coworkers and colleagues who help me achieve during my time on "The Hill".

ULM Adds Grambling State to 2014 Baseball Slate

MOROE, Louisiana -- The ULM baseball team has added Grambling State to its schedule and the two teams will battle at Warhawk Field on Tuesday, May 6 at 6 p.m.

ULM has lost just one of its originally scheduled 56 games as the squad enters the month of May. ULM and Southern Illinois were set to battle on the final day of the Carmel Inn Showdown in Thibodaux, La., but heavy rain combined with the Salukis scheduled flight out of New Orleans canceled that meeting.

ULM and Grambling State met in Monroe on April 23rd with the Warhawks claiming a 3-2 walkoff win as Kodie Tidwell delivered a one-out, solo homer in the bottom of the ninth to give ULM the win.

Powell becomes first MVSU men's basketball signee

ITTA BENA, Mississippi -- Mississippi Valley State Interim Head Men's Basketball Coach Marcus Thomas has announced the signing of Brayden Powell.

Powell, a 6-foot-8, 200-pound forward from Moore, Oklahoma, becomes the first member of the 2014 signing class for the Delta Devils.

"We're glad to have Brayden join the Valley family," said Thomas. "He has a huge upside and can be a contributing member to the team. And not only has Brayden excelled on the basketball court, but he is also a standout student."

Last season, Moore -- who was a finalist for Mr. Basketball -- averaged 16 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and five blocks per game at Moore High School.

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's Devinn Rolland, Nour Abbes and Tushar Mandlekar added to their collection of Gulf Coast Athletic Conference weekly awards Monday.
   
Rolland was named GCAC Field Athlete of the Week for the fourth time this season and Track Athlete of the Week for the third time. Abbes is the Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the sixth time, and Mandlekar is Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the second time. All were chosen for performances from April 21-27.
   
Rolland, a junior from Harvey, La., and a graduate of Cabrini High Schol in New Orleans, produced NAIA national A-qualifying marks in the long jump (19 feet, 2¾ inches), the 400-meter relay (47.42 seconds) and the 200 (24.75) at the Leon Johnson NSU Invitational in Natchitoches, La., on Saturday. Rolland met the B-standard in the 100 (12.12).
   
Rolland teamed with Kailey Williams, Tramaine Shannon and Chelsea James for the Gold Nuggets' fastest 400 relay time of the last five years.
   
Abbes, a freshman from Tunis, Tunisia, and a graduate of Lycée Sportif d'El Menzah, remained unbeaten in singles for the season and helped the Gold Nuggets beat NAIA No. 10 Oklahoma Baptist and top-ranked Georgia Gwinnett to win the NAIA Unaffiliated Group 2 Tournament in New Orleans. Abbes defeated Georgia Gwinnett's Valeria Podda, the ITA's third-ranked NAIA singles player, 6-3, 6-2 in championship dual on Saturday.
   
Mandlekar, a freshman from Bhilai, India, and a graduate ofDeepak Nagar school, was a combined 5-1 in doubles and singles and helped the Gold Rush finish second in the unaffiliated group tournament. His 6-0, 6-0 victory against Tougaloo's Julius Gladney in the first round on Friday increased his singles win streak to a season-best five matches.
   
Rolland extended her GCAC career records for most weekly field awards (10) and track awards (6). Abbes extended her GCAC season record.

Gold Nuggets clinch automatic berth to NAIA Women's Tennis National Championships

NEW ORLEANS  -- Tuesday after 3 p.m., the seventh NAIA Women's Tennis Coaches' Top 25 Poll of the season will be announced. There's a reasonable chance that Xavier University of Louisiana will ascend to No. 1.

Xavier, currently No. 2, defeated No. 1 Georgia Gwinnett 5-3 in the championship of the NAIA Unaffiliated Group 2 Tournament in New Orleans on Saturday.

Xavier women's tennis was No. 1 in three consecutive polls last season.

This season Xavier is 15-6 with 12 victories in its last 14 duals. The Gold Nuggets have eight victories this season against ranked opponents, five against top-10 teams.

Xavier has two victories this season against No. 1 teams. The other was 5-4 on March 9 at three-time defending NAIA champion Auburn Montgomery.
The team will depart New Orleans on the afternoon of May 11 for the NAIA National Championship, which will begin May 13 in Mobile, Ala.

ASU Student Athletes Honored At Athletic Banquet

MONTGOMERY, Alabama --   Volleyball 's Amber Bennett and men's baseball Richard Gonzalez received top honors as they won Most Valuable Player of the year awards. Track athlete Artrailia LeSane and Baseball's Richard Amion were named Student Athletes of the year for their performances and hard work during their athletic season.

 Bennett, from Baton Rouge, La. helped guide the Lady Hornets volleyball team to their first ever eastern division and Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship, and appearance in the NCAA volleyball tournament earlier in the year.
 Lesane, from Fayetteville, N.C. has been a key spark to the Lady Hornets Track and Field teams championships in cross country, indoor and outdoor as she received All-SWAC and Most Outstanding Field Performer honors while, maintaining a 4.00 GPA.

Gonzalez, from Caguas, Puerto Rico and Amion, from Miami, FL both were honored for guiding the Hornet Baseball team to their best win record in school history and to a 2014 Eastern Division Crown as the SWAC Baseball tournament approaches in May.

Also honored for having the highest grade-point average in each sport were men's golf Robert Grant and volleyball's Brooke Beasley each of which had 4.0 GPA's for the year.

Team of the year Honors went to the women's indoor track and field program which won its sixth straight championship earlier in the year, and wrapped up its third consecutive Triple Crown championship after capturing the 2014 outdoor title down in New Orleans, LA.

 Other awards that were given out at the annual event were the large team academic awards, which was given to the Lady Hornets soccer and baseball teams, and the Lady Hornet tennis and men's golf, captured the small team academic awards.

--  Alabama State University athletic department held its annual Athletic Banquet ceremony Monday at the downtown Montgomery Renaissance Hotel Ballroom to honor all of the Hornet student-athletes for their hard work and dedication in the classroom and in their respective sports.

Head Coach Jamey Shouppe was all smiles after the upset win over then No. 6 Florida

TALLAHASSEE, Florida  –  Florida A&M (19-23, 11-9 MEAC) split four road games last week, going 2-2, with a huge win over then No. 6 Florida in Gainesville, but went 1-2 over the weekend at North Carolina Central in a key MEAC series.

The Rattlers would have put themselves in great position for first place in the Southern Division with a series win, but are definitely still in contention for the top spot heading into the final conference series of the season against North Carolina A&T.

FAMU trails division leader Bethune-Cookman (20-26, 12-9 MEAC) only by a half game in the Southern Division standings.

Florida A&M had its chances all weekend as they took a 5-3 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth inning of game one, but fell 8-5. After winning game two 7-3 in dominating fashion, FAMU led Sunday’s game three 11-4 in the fifth before Central took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth as the Rattlers fell in a heartbreaker 15-11.

The pitching staff had an up and down week. Against then No. 6 Florida, the staff worked nine strong innings only allowing three earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts. In the series at NC Central, the short field in right (290 feet) wasn’t too kind to Florida A&M as the Eagles belted six home runs in the series. In the two losses, the Rattlers allowed 27 hits, including nine for extra bases, with a staff ERA of 12.94. In the win against Central, David Duncan earned the win after only giving up three runs on six hits with four strikeouts. William Carrasco pitched the final two scoreless innings, in the win, only giving up one hit.

The offense hit .290 as a team for the week with seven doubles and five home runs, including Marlon Gibbs first career home run. Catchers Jeremy Barlow and Ferdinand Rondon split time behind the dish, each having two starts. Both went 4-for-7 (.571) on the week while Barlow had a slugging percentage of 1.000. Michael Birdsong had a productive week hitting .429 (6-for-14) from the DH spot with a home run and two doubles. Birdsong was a triple short of the cycle against Central on Sunday as he went 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored.

MVSU Devilettes ruin JSU's chance at unblemished SWAC record

ITTA BENA, Mississippi -- In a game that was televised live on ESPNU, the Mississippi Valley State softball team captured a 6-4 win over Jackson State on Saturday to give the Lady Tigers their first SWAC loss of the season. JSU, however, rebounded in the final game of the doubleheader with a 4-2 victory.

It marked the final game of the regular season for the Devilettes, who finished third in the SWAC Eastern Division. The SWAC Softball Tournament is set for May 7-10 in Decatur, Ala. at Wilson Morgan Park.

Game 1 (MVSU 6, JSU 4)
Deja Talton's RBI-double in the third inning helped spur a MVSU comeback on national TV. The Devilettes came back from a 2-0 deficit and putting three runs on the board in the third inning using Talton's double and an error by JSU that resulted in Valley's third run of the inning.

MVSU stretched its run to 6-0 by the end of the sixth inning after a RBI-triple by Yasmin Battle in the fourth inning and two additional runs in the sixth.

JSU scored two runs in the seventh inning, but it wasn't enough to keep the Devilettes from spoiling the Lady Tigers' perfect season.

Cassandra Rivera, one of Valley's two seniors, won the game on the mound -- giving up two earned runs on six hits with 4.2 innings of work.

Game 2 (JSU 4, MVSU 2)
JSU withstood four errors to defeat the Devilettes, 4-2, in the final game of the series Saturday. Overall, the game included seven errors, as both teams concluded their regular seasons.

MVSU's Yasmin Battle went 2-of-3 at the plate with a RBI-double -- its first run of the game in the first inning. Valley's final run of the game also came in the first inning on a wild pitch.

Cassandra Rivera had three strikeouts on the mound for Valley in 3.1 innings of relief work.

Texas Soutbern Lady Tigers sweep Southern to close out regular season league play



Saturday TSU recognized five seniors who have been integral parts of the
Lady Tigers softball program

 HOUSTON, Texas  -- The Texas Southern Lady Tigers softball team completed a three-game sweep of Southern on Saturday at Memorial Park.  Texas Southern won games two and three 15-11 and 12-1 respectively.

Texas Southern improved its overall record to 27-16 for the season as they get set to wrap up regular season play this upcoming week.

The head storyline of the Lady Tigers three-game set with SU was the outstanding play of TSU catcher Chelsea Guenther who drove in 12 runs over the weekend.

"I'm really liking the way we're hitting the ball and Chelsea has been a big part of our success at the plate," said TSU head coach Worley Barker.  "Over the next few days we want to continue to show improvement in all facets of the game as we prepare for SWAC Tournament play."

"I feel really great about the way we played today," said Guenther. "Coach moved me up to the three hole in the lineup and that gave me a lot of RBI opportunities."

The Lady Tigers will host Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday at Memorial Park at 4:00 pm in a single seven inning contest.
