Baltimore, Md.— The Coppin State University volleyball team begins a new era and season as they take on University of Maryland Eastern Shore Friday (Aug. 24) at 6 p.m. in its season opener.
First-year head coach Rich Zwolinski is optimistic about this year’s team and the beginning of the 2007 season. “I am very excited to be the coach at Coppin State,” said Zwolinski. “We are starting with a clean slate and we are ready to go.”
Coppin State returns four players from last year’s team that finished eighth in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Second-team All-MEAC selection senior Indira Laurencin will anchor the squad from the middle blocker position. Fellow senior Danyel Davis will provide more veteran leadership from the outside hitter position. Junior middle blocker, Brittany Arvin, a 2005 second-team All-MEAC selection and sophomore Kanishia Sheppard also return for the Eagles.
The Eagles have been chosen to finish ninth in the MEAC preseason poll as selected by the conference head coaches and sports information directors. Zwolinski said, “If we play hard, I think we can surprise some people this year.”
The season opener at UMES will count as a non-conference match. Coppin State will begin the season on a nine-game road swing before returning to the Coppin Center Sept. 25 to host the Hawks in its home opener.
