College baseball beckons in Baton Rouge

COACH ROGER CADOR
BATON ROUGE, Louisiana  --  Happy Mardi Gras to one and all! I grew up in New Orleans and enjoyed Mardi Gras for many, many years. I do not participate nearly as much as I once did.

Instead, this time of the year for me has me in a get ready for baseball mode. Major League Baseball camps open in Arizona and Florida this week with pitchers and catchers reporting. Full squads are due in early next week. Here in Baton Rouge, all baseball fans are ready for the college season to get underway.

The Southern Jaguars of Roger Cador are picked to win the Western Division of the SWAC. I spoke to Coach Cador recently and he stated that it is too early to judge his team. He also has a mixture of returning players and newcomers on the Jaguar roster. The Jags also open the season this coming weekend at home with a three-game set against Stillman College from Tuscaloosa, AL at Lee-Hines Field.

The following weekend in Houston at Minute Maid Field, The Jaguars will participate in the Major League Baseball Urban Youth Academy Series. This is an opportunity for Southern to play three games in a Major League park. Look for the Jags to be ready to win at the end of SWAC play and in that league's post season tournament.
