XU duals with Oklahoma Baptist will be resumed Saturday

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas -- Xavier University of Louisiana's tennis duals with Oklahoma Baptist were suspended at approximately 10:45 p.m. Friday after a 40-minute rain delay and a power failure about 20 minutes after play resumed.

The matches will resume at 9 a.m. Saturday with the Gold Rush leading 4-2 and the Gold Nuggets trailing 3-2. The XU men are ranked eighth and the women 13th in the NAIA; Oklahoma Baptist's women are ranked 18th.

"OBU's men should be in the top 25, too," XU coach Alan Green said. "They look good. It feels like a match we would play at nationals."

The Gold Rush won twice in doubles and twice in singles. Loic Didavi and Kyle Montrel defeated Marco Carvajal and Dario Macanovic 8-1 at No. 1 doubles, and Nikita Soifer and Viktor Svoboda won the last five games to beat Augustin Janssen and Gonzalo Garzon 9-7 at No. 2. Svoboda was first off the court in singles after his 6-0, 6-0 decision against Kolt Byerly at No. 4. Montrel defeated Macanovic 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).

The other three Gold Rush singles players -- Didavi, Soifer and Benjamin Brading -- were in third sets when the lights at the Prairie View A&M University Tennis Complex went off and could not be turned on again.

Amanda Materre contributed to both of the Gold Nuggets' points. Materre and Simone-Alyse Ewell defeated Mariana Rosa and Camden Rodriguez 8-0 at No. 2 doubles. Materre defeated Rosa 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.

The Gold Rush will play NAIA No. 10 Bethany (Kan.) at 2 p.m. Saturday. The women will not play Saturday. Both teams will conclude their trip with 9 a.m. Sunday duals against Prairie View.
