Jones says Bulldogs are on track

With two weeks left before the season opener against Tennessee State, Alabama A&M football coach Anthony Jones said the Bulldogs are about where they need to be following Saturday night's scrimmage.

A&M ran approximately 90 plays in the 21/2-hour scrimmage at Louis Crews Stadium.

"This is a good place for us to be two weeks out," Jones said. "I just want to get healthy so we can get to another level, but this is not a bad place to be."

Sitting out: Six players missed Saturday night's scrimmage with a variety of ailments.

The list included tight end Charles Moody (groin), wide receiver Thomas Harris (thumb), defensive ends Dominic Cummings (leg) and Justin Okpara (hand), defensive back Stephan Tucker (ankle) and offensive linemen Antonio Regist (foot).

Moving: With Cummings sidelined, Chris Traylor moved from left end to right end and played pretty well, according to defensive line coach Ben Blacknall.

"I'm trying to see who can do what in case something happens," Blacknall said. "Chris did a good job. Had we counted sacks tonight, he would have had five or six."

Defensive tackle Justin Harper jammed his thumb early in the scrimmage and was held out the rest of the way.

"We're hoping to find out the extent of that (today)," Blacknall said.

On a roll:A&M's top three running backs - Ulysses Banks, Anthony Green and Max Martin - were all productive during Saturday's scrimmage.

Banks had 35 yards on seven carries, including a 38-yard touchdown run that was called back due to a holding penalty. Green had 41 yards on six carries, while Martin had 27 yards on four attempts. "Neither one is going to hurt us," Jones said. "We've got to work to get them better.

"They're still not where we want them to be, but they're three pretty good weapons."

Tryouts Monday: A&M will hold tryouts on Monday for anyone who wants to join the team. Those interested are asked to be at Hobson Fieldhouse at 2 p.m.

Freshmen must have an NCAA Clearinghouse certification letter certifying their eligibility.

Returning and transfer students must have up-to-date transcripts.
