FAMU's Taylor out with sore knee

By Heath A. Smith,DEMOCRAT STAFF WRITER

All-MEAC punter Wesley Taylor is day-to-day after hurting his right knee in a FAMU punt drill Tuesday.

"It swelled up on me, and right now we are taking precautions," Taylor said Wednesday. "We'll wait and see what happens. Hopefully it is nothing bad."

Taylor, a senior out of Riverview High School, earned All-America honors as a punter two years ago, and was named All-MEAC as a place kicker last season.

"He's going to be OK," said head coach Rubin Carter. "We're just taking precaution and keeping him on the sideline. He's done quite a bit of kicking in camp.

"Wesley will be fine, and we know exactly what he is capable of already. He'll be back in a few days."

While Taylor rests his knee, walk-on freshman Troy Walker out of Wakulla High School will be handling all the punting and kicking duties.

"I've always been the one put on the spot in high school and expected to carry the load," said Walker, who made All-State as a senior. "It will be hard to fill Wesley's shoes, but I'll do my best until he comes back."

Taylor said he's been getting tips from Taylor and former FAMU place-kicker Juan Vasquez.

"I'm just telling him to stay focused," Taylor said. "He's coming along real well and I have a lot of confidence in him."

So does Carter.

"Troy is doing well," Carter said. "He's getting much better with his mechanics."
