Quarterback Albert Chester II let off some steam Wednesday afternoon, and his backup was smoking.

Rattlers coach Rubin Carter took it all in with a sense of satisfaction after watching FAMU go through a live drill - with referees and all.

With the season's first game against Southern University on Sept. 1, Carter took the afternoon to assess penalties on both sides of the ball. Carter was so pleased with the effort that he broke practice without the usual sprints across the field for the entire team.

In all, about five flags were thrown by the two referees, most of them against offensive linemen.

"We're trying to eliminate a high number of penalties with our football team," Carter said. "One of the things we can't do is beat ourselves with penalty situations and moving the ball back, creating disadvantages."

Throughout the afternoon, Chester worked methodically against a swarming defense. But he got on his linemen when a defensive end found a wide-open hole. That forced Chester to get rid of the ball prematurely, and defensive back Michael Creary intercepted it.

Chester scolded the young line. "You can't hang me out to dry like that," he yelled, leaving the huddle to confront the linemen on the sideline.

The interception was the only major gaffe of the day on offense. Chester's backups, especially third-string Eddie Battle, were sharp all afternoon.

The Rattlers' defense continues to show something resembling midseason form and went into a wild celebration following Creary's second pick of the preseason workouts.

"It feels great because I know I was helping my team out," Creary said. "It started with the coaches and it comes down to hard work. We've got to be disciplined."

First Game: Sept. 1, FAMU vs. Southern at Birmingham, Ala., 3 p.m. on ESPN Classic, WHBX (96.1 FM)
