NORFOLK, Va. – Starting quarterback Casey Hansen (Norco, Calif.) threw two touchdown passes and backup Korey Jones (Portsmouth, Va.) tossed one to highlight the Norfolk State football team’s second scrimmage of preseason practice on Saturday evening at Dick Price Stadium.

An enthusiastic crowd of several hundred Spartan fans saw the team’s offense come to life after the defense stole the show at the first scrimmage last Saturday.

On the first possession of the night, Hansen capped a 70-yard drive with an 18-yard touchdown to junior receiver Dario Walker (Ettrick, Va.). After the first-team defense earned a stop on the next series, Hansen led another 70-yard TD drive. This one he capped with a 60-yard scoring strike to redshirt freshman Nigel McCowan (Mechanicsville, Va.).

Jones took over under center on the next possession and led a long scoring march of his own. He threw a 12-yard TD pass to redshirt freshman Darryl Dickerson (Richmond, Va.) on fourth down to get his team into the end zone.

Though there was no scoring on the final four drives of the night, the action remained spirited. Defensively, linebacker Brandon Sawyer (Virginia Beach, Va.) registered the first sack of the night on a blitz to slow one drive. Freshman fullback Tommy Moore (Woodbridge, Va.) put the offense in position to score with two long, tackle-breaking runs on another possession.

Cornerback Andre Twine (Chesapeake, Va.) also stood out, registering several bone-jarring tackles on NSU receivers.

NSU also spent approximately half of the 75-minute scrimmage working on special teams, including punt, kickoff and field goal practice.

The Spartans are slated to hold their final preseason scrimmage next Saturday at 10 a.m.
