Photo: Joelle Gibson, Barbados Soccer StarJACKSON, Miss. – Jackson State head soccer coach Adeniji Olagbegi recently signed Joelle Gibson, one of Barbados’ most outstanding athletic talents.
Gibson is an outstanding women’s soccer player who has the ability to play in defense or midfield. She is the first female from the Barbados to earn a soccer scholarship to a university in the United States.
Gibson, who is considered a pioneer in women’s soccer in Barbados, is currently representing the national under-20 team in the CONCACAF qualifying tournament in Cuba for the FIFA Youth World Cup.
Her ability was highlighted last year while on tour to St. Lucia with her club team, Genesis. The Genesis team won the Barbados’ inaugural women’s league in 2006.
Gibson also won rave reviews for her play when Barbados played its first international competition against Antigua and Barbuda at the National Stadium. Last October, she led the under-20 team to a 1-0 victory over St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Gibson is expected to report to campus in mid-August.
