Jackson State defensive tackle Corey Clark missed his second straight practice on Friday night for what coach Rick Comegy called "personal reasons."
"It's not really an academic problem," Comegy said. "It's just something that he got himself into and now he has to handle. It's frustrating because we really do need him out here."
Clark (6 feet 3, 320 pounds) was the anchor to Jackson State's impressive run defense last season that was tops in the conference, allowing just 93.9 yards per game on the ground.
Clark had 44 tackles last season, including 7 1/2 for a loss.
Outside of Clark, the entire Jackson State defense has had trouble with injuries so far in camp. Starting linebacker Marcus Smith (ankle) is already lost for the season. Defensive end Idrees Abdur-Rashied (hand) is likely to miss another week and defensive tackle Jamile Owens (knee) has also missed the past few practices.
SCRIMMAGE TODAY
Jackson State will take the field at 9 a.m. today for what Comegy said would be an abbreviated scrimmage.
Both the first and second teams are expected to go for about 30 plays with the focus on goal-line situations.
"We need the repetitions, but we also don't need anybody else to get hurt," Comegy said. "We just started our goal-line package (on Friday), so it might be a little ugly during the scrimmage. But that's why we're learning."
TIGER BASH
Jackson State's Blue Bengal Athletic Association is having its Tiger Football Bash at 5 p.m. today at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.
