
The message board detectives have announced that the FAMU Sports Hall of Fame will enshrine seven new members on September 14, 2007. The 32nd class of inductees will include:
• William “Billy” Joe, former FAMU football head coach who won 86 games in eleven seasons with the Rattlers (86-46), four MEAC championships, seven consecutive 1-AA playoff appearances and won a Black College National title in 1998. Billy Joe is the second winning-est coach in Black College history with 237 victories (237-108-4) in a 31 year career.
• Fred Goldsmith was a defensive coordinator at FAMU for five seasons, whereas the Rattlers defenses were nationally ranked in 1977-78. With Goldsmith leadership on the defensive side of the ball, FAMU won consecutive NCAA 1-AA National Football Championships and had a 23-1 record during that period. FAMU won the first NCAA 1-AA (playoff) Championship in 1978.
• The late Gifford “Spanky” Ramsey played football during the 1977-80 seasons, and was coached by Fred Goldsmith. He was a stud, star safety on the championship teams during this period and was well loved by the Rattler Nation.
• Leroy Charlton was a football and track star during the period 1967-70.
• Theodore “Ted” Richardson was a football and baseball star in 1957-60.
• David Best is being immortalized for his achievements at FAMU during 1958-61 in baseball.
• Sarah Hill-Yates is a former senior woman administrator and associate athletic director. She served during the period of 1970 to 1988. Hill-Yates was instrumental in helping raise the women’s programs to Division I status.
The induction ceremonies will be held at the Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
