Shell heads golf classic
Daily Banner, PRINCESS ANNE — The legendary Art Shell returns to the shore to host other NFL greats and area golf enthusiasts Sept. 18 and 19 during the University of Maryland Eastern Shore/Art Shell Celebrity Golf Classic at GlenRiddle Golf Club near Ocean City.
National Football League Hall of Fame inductees Elvin Bethea (Houston Oilers 1968-83, NFL HOF Class of 2003), Carl Eller (Minnesota Vikings 1964-78, Seattle Seahawks 1979, NFL HOF Class of 2004), Lenny Moore (Baltimore Colts 1956-67, NFL HOF Class of 1975), Bobby Mitchell (Cleveland Browns 1958-61, Washington Redskins 1962-68; coach, Washington Redskins 1969-2002; NFL HOF Class of 1983) and Charley Taylor (Washington Redskins 1964-75, 1977, NFL HOF Class of 1984) are among the football pros planning to participate in the two-day event.
The tournament will include a Tuesday pairing party at 5 p.m. in the university’s Richard A. Henson Center and a day at a world-class golf course on Sept. 19. The main event begins with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. on the GlenRiddle Man O’War Course.
Other football pros planning to participate include Roy Jefferson (Pittsburgh Steelers 1965-69, Baltimore Colts 1970, Washington Redskins 1971-76), Mack Alston (Washington Redskins 1970-72, Houston Oilers 1973-76, Baltimore Colts 1976-80, UMES Class of 1971), Billy Thompson (Denver Broncos 1969-81, UMES Class of 1969), Brian Mitchell (Washington Redskins 1990-99, Philadelphia Eagles 2000-02, New York Giants 2003), Ted Vactor (Washington Redskins 1969-73, Chicago Bears 1975), Reggie Branch (Washington Redskins 1985-89), Carl Hairston (Philadelphia Eagles 1976-83, Cleveland Browns 1984-89, Arizona Cardinals 1990, Green Bay Packers assistant coach, UMES Class of 1985), Doug Goodwin (Buffalo Bills 1966, Atlanta Falcons 1968, UMES Class of 1971) and Otis Sistrunk (Oakland Raiders 1972-78).
“Returning to the shore to host the pros while playing golf is one of my favorite things to do,” said Shell, (AFL Oakland Raiders 1968-69, NFL Oakland Raiders 1970-81, Los Angeles Raiders 1982; offensive line coach, Los Angeles Raiders 1983-89; head coach, Los Angeles Raiders 1990-94; offensive line coach, Kansas City Chiefs 1995-96; offensive line coach, Atlanta Falcons, 1997-2000; head coach, Oakland Raiders 2006; UMES Class of 1968).
“It’s not all about the fun, however, because with the help of my colleagues, I look forward to presenting the university with much needed funds to support student scholarships, the UMES Golf Academy and the upcoming Professional Golf Management program.”
The registration fee is $200 per individual or $750 per foursome and includes 18 holes of golf with a celebrity, a post-tournament meal, food and beverages on the course, and commemorative gifts. The pre-tournament pairing party is free to registered golfers and $10 for guests.
“The tournament is open to anyone interested in a fun-filled day, using a scrambled format and golfing with the pros,” said Marshall Cropper (Pittsburgh Steelers 1967-69, Washington Redskins), tournament director and UMES Golf Academy director.
