B-CU Football Signs 22 to National Letters of Intent

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida  -- Bethune-Cookman University football head coach Terry Sims announced 22 student-athletes had signed national letters of intent to play collegiate football at B-CU on Wednesday, during the nation’s first day of early-signing for collegiate football. The announcement came at a reception for the Wildcats signing day inside the Mary McLeod Bethune Performing Arts Center.

“Overall, I’m very pleased,” stated Sims following the day’s signings. “Speaking of our coaches, I think we did a great job going out and securing this class. Some of these kids we’ve only been recruiting for a short period, and the coaches did a great job researching these guys. It’s a lot of work that goes into it, and we stayed on the road two to three weeks at a time away from our own families getting to know these guys and their families.

“We have an extensive process that we use when recruiting young men to Bethune-Cookman. We have to make sure that his transcript is where it needs to be. We have to make sure that socially, we speak to everyone at his high school – the janitor, the kitchen staff and counselors. We even talk to people in the community to make sure that we’re getting a good person. After that, we evaluate the football side of it.”

Bethune-Cookman’s letters of intent started rolling in around 8:30 a.m., and the fax machine and telephones did not stop until almost 4 p.m. In the end, Sims and his staff had all of the recruits they were seeking to sign, while there are still a few other offers out on the table for the coming days/weeks.

Of the 22 signees in this year’s class, 14 hail from the Sunshine State, while a number of others come from Georgia and Mississippi.

Five student-athletes come from junior colleges, with the rest all being incoming freshmen from high school.

“I am extremely pleased, once again, with the class, and I’m proud of the coaches for sticking in there and not wavering during the change,” continued Sims. “Everybody stuck to their guns, and just kept recruiting.”
