TAMPA, Florida -- After finishing fourth in her heat in the first round of the 400-meter hurdles to qualify on time for the quarterfinals, Alabama State's Shamaria Lovett left no doubt she was going to the NCAA Championships in June with a third place finish in her heat Friday afternoon.
The top three student-athletes from each heat in the East Preliminary, along with the next three times qualified for the NCAA Championships and Lovett finished with a new personal best time of 57.30 (57.296) seconds to finish with the 10th-fastest time to qualify as one of the 12 student-athletes to keep competing next month.
"I am very proud of Shamaria," Alabama State head track and field coach Ritchie Beenesaid. "She committed herself to advancing by doing what she needed to, and put in the work to get to Eugene."
Kyana Evans also competed in the 400-meter hurdle quarterfinals, finishing with a time of 58.87 seconds, running in the second heat that sent four runners to the championships.
Meanwhile, Charminiqu Hackney took to the track twice on the second day of the meet. She hit the track in the quarterfinals of the 100-meter dash after qualifying through the first round Thursday, and finished with a time of 11.30 seconds – missing the cut for the NCAA Championships by just 0.07 seconds. She crossed the line 17th overall in the event, after running in the opening heat in which three of the top four times qualified for the NCAA Championships. She returned to the track just a few hours later to finish 39th overall in the 200-meters, crossing the line in a time of 23.54 seconds.
On the men's side, Terrance Adams finished 41st overall in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.41 (14.403) seconds competing in his first Preliminary Meet.
The meet concludes Saturday at the USF Track & Field Complex with the Lady Hornets competing in the 4x100-meter relay.
