S.C. State Preseason Practice Brief

ALLMEACFOOTBALLORANGEBURG, South Carolina -- The Bulldogs of South Carolina State conducted their first preseason drill in full pads Wednesday and the session was very enthusiastic despite the added weight, according to head coach Buddy Pough.

"Our first day in full pads turned out to be a nice little practice," Pough said. "We didn't go live in a lot of drills but our players continued to work hard and show enthusiasm, which is satisfying to the coaches. Despite not having a lot of live action, we wanted to see how the players handled working out in full pads for the first time.

"A lot the players picked up things pretty well and demonstrated that they belong and that they will be able to help us this fall," continued Pough. "But, most of all, I was pleased that we made an effort to protect each other as we want to avoid any early injuries."

Pough said the mission for preseason drills is to improve day-by-day and put a solid team on the field in September. He also noted that, in addition to holding drills inside O.C. Dawson Stadium which has turf, that the team has also begun working out on the practice field, which has grass.

"We play our first two games (against Georgia Southern Sept. 1 and UCF Sept 8) on grass so we feel it's important that we get in some work on grass so we will be acclimated to it when the season starts," he noted.

SC State resumes drills Thursday at 2:30 p.m. Pough's team will also practice at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, which is a change from the schedule which had the drill originally set for 9 a.m., according to the Bulldog mentor.
