How It Happened

First Set

  • Ties were the name of the game in the first set as the two squads failed to earn significant separation.
  • The largest lead came for Delaware State at the 23-19 mark, but CSU would make the Hornets sweat, rattling off four unanswered points before      DSU shut the door at 25-23.
  • The Lady Hornets might have won the set, but Eagles attackers Stennis and Coleman kept Coppin within striking distance, knocking down 12 kills between the two.
  • To go along with her seven kills, Stennis was stellar in her attempts, hitting .667 on nine attacks.
  • Both squads made the other earn its points, as each team only committed five errors apiece for the set.
  • Delaware State's set victory was its first in its last five matches along with the first set won in MEAC play for the Hornets.
Second Set
  • Coppin State responded with authority, sailing to a 13-7 advantage via four separate kill contributors.
  • DSU would claw back within three and make a game of it, however a 7-1 final surge knotted the match at one.
  • Coleman contributed six more kills, with her right-hand woman being Lauryn Harrell with four of her own.
Third Set
  • The Lady Hornets and Lady Eagles went back to the stalemate format of the first set, as five ties in the first 20 points suggested another tightly contested outing.
  • A Coppin 5-1 run broke the set open just enough for the Eagles to hold the Hornets at bay, as the four-point spread was the final margin in a 25-21 third set decision.
  • Coleman continued her torrid pace, smashing another 7 kills to lead the Eagles attack once again.
Fourth Set
  • Delaware State was a feisty foe for Coppin State as the Hornets led as late as 21-19.
  • Coppin turned up the heat from there, taking off on a 4-0 burst to put DSU on the brink of elimination.
  • Delaware State fought back to get it tied again at 23 before kills by Christa Johnson and Coleman put the final nail in the coffin, 25-23.
Inside the Numbers
  • Coleman rewrote the record books for the second time, clubbing the most kills in program history for a four-set match. The previous record also came against the Hornets, when Stacy Celestin accomplished the feat 15 years ago.

  • Stennis recorded her second double-double in as many matches and fourth of 2018.
  • Harrell went over the 10-kill mark for the first time in her young career.
  • Brianna Lang put together her second highest assist total so far, racking up 50 assists and a 12.5 average on the day.
  • Asia Stennis and Chelsie Kolibar both hit double-digit digs to lead the Eagles, as Kolibar hit 13 to go with 11 for Stennis.
